WEST COAST TRAIL: 5-day backpacking trip on Vancouver Island
This is a 75 km trail and we spent 5-days hiking through the backcountry. I hope you enjoy coming along on this adventure with my husband Brian and I! From ladders, to suspension bridges, to old growth forests, to tidal pools, and vast sandy beaches, this trail has so much to offer.
The trail passes through the territory of the Huuay-aht, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht First Nations. Thank you for allowing us to hike through your land and experience this incredibly special landscape.
You can find my complete gear list below.
Thank you so much for watching,
Krys

Great video I am of the age when traveling in the back country or wilderness areas I seldom saw others. It is great that so many young people get outside in today's world. It is a very different experience today. I just returned from a 5 day 4 night rafting trip on the Owyhee River in SE Oregon. . Other than the launch site or the take out site we rarely saw any other rafters. A word of caution. We did see one group that was not properly equipped and 2/3 of the group lost their boats. They had to spend one night in the open, wet and with no shelter. Other rafters picked them up and reunited the group. A reminder, the mountains and rivers do not care. If you are not prepared to self rescue you can die.
Those ladders with backpacks on 😮😳👀👏👏👏🫣
The sea lions are so great.
Hey!! It mike and lisa from the wct Was great meeting you too out there, we stayed with you at camper and cribs, i assume you guys made it to klanawa, we made it to michigan, downpoured out!!!! Love your channel, was great to meet you and bryan, look forward to your future videos Mike & lisa
This is so soothing. Thanks for giving me the pleasure of this adventure without the sore muscles, back, feet. I’ve done a lot of hiking, but it’s way better when you do it!

Yay! Glad you enjoyed coming along!! It’s so funny how, after certain types of experience, trails seem different. After my Croatia hike last year, any trail that is easy to follow seems so much easier to me now 😂
Nice song starting around @2:41.
This has to be one of the best nature hikes anywhere. What an amazing country we live in! Also kinda nice to hear Brian's laugh again, brings back wonderful memories.

It truly is incredible! Such a special experience to get to hike the trail for my second time and especially special to do it with Brian. I often forget how much knowledge about the coastline my mom has imparted on me and I was loving teaching Brian everything I know. He had a blast! His laughter and the sparkle in his eye is so wonderful to see, especially with how much he's been going through.
I was so inspired by your PCT shorts that I signed up for the WCT yesterday and then this popped into my feed today. What a delight to see this trail through your eyes and to hear your soothing voice. I am so looking forward to this trek now even more! Thank you!

Loved your video, I hope to do this trail in the future. We just completed the Lake Superior coastal trail this summer, that experience made me wanting more
You will love it! I meant
I've had the privilege of doing from Nitnaht to Pacheena Bay and wasn't sure I'd ever want to go back because there is just so much to see and Hike but this video reminded me of how special the WCT is. ❤

That's wonderful you've seen that section - it's so incredible!! This was my second time hiking and it was equally awe inspiring the second time! Such a special place.
Would love to get your bits and bites recipe :)
Great video. Strange question, what kind of tent stakes did you use with your Durston tent?
hate to CARRY a bear can but it's super convenient to HAVE a bear can

100% my thoughts exactly. Convenient in some ways and not in others. Trying to decide if I'll carry it for my whole PCT or not ...
Thanks for this Krysta. I have often wondered what the West Coast Trail looked like. And knowing I will never hike it, it was fun to hike along with you! Why not consider coming to Haida Gwaii one time? We have many great hikes there with stunning scenery and amazing wildlife. Let me know! Take care.

Hi Judy! So glad you enjoyed!! I would absolutely love to visit Haida Gwaii and I will definitely let you know if I plan a trip up there!
The weather looks so nice. What month do you recommend going?
I enjoyed your video. I would love to do that trail. Are solo yikers allowed? Have you done the Easr Coast trail in Newfoundland? It is spectacular. I live near it and completed it in sections. Planning to do a thru hike next! Come east, you will loge it too.

Yep! Solo hiking is permitted 👍
Thank you for this. My 12yo, 15yo and I are planning to do this next June, if we can score a permit. We did the JDF last year. I have to say, I wonder if the WCT trail is easier in some respects?
@KrystaNorwick

Oh wow! So excited for you!! If you don’t initially get a permit, keep your eye on cancellations. That’s usually how I always get a permit. I actually find JDF and WCT pretty different, so ya, you might find WCT easier on a daily basis!
I would.love to see your gear review foe this hike. Was this a hyperlite pack?
@briannorwick

Krysta used her Durston Kakwa 55l pack and Durston Xmid 2 tent. Krys used the same pack to hike the PCT with- she really liked it!
Were doing cape scott again this july. what month did you do the WCT

Amazing!! I hope you have a wonderful hike! We did the WCT in May :)
How much did your packs weight? I am planning a 6 night 7 day WCT hike. Any pack guidance would be great, what you loved having and what you didn’t need
@KrystaNorwick

I think we were probably both carrying around 30 lbs at the start. I was super happy with everything I had. Within my Juan de Fuca trail video you can see a full breakdown of my gear. It’s the same gear I had with me on the WCT. If you still have questions after watching that, let me know!
Oh, also, Krista…how did you find the Altras for this trip? I am not sure about mine for long days, especially with the big pack. That said, I suspect you are an expert at packing light!
@KrystaNorwick

I personally much prefer hiking in shoes versus boots. I like having more freedom of movement. I had no issues at all with my shoes. My pack was probably about 26-28 lbs fully loaded at the start. But everyone is different! Some people prefer having a more rigid boot. But it’s definitely not a requirement.
What time of year was this?

I've seen several people doing that, but never tried barefoot on a hike before. I do love the feeling of my feet on the earth though.
Do you know that Vancouver has the highest concentration of cougers/mountain lions in the lower 48 !?!?
