I upset a lot of folks on a deer stalking forum with this comment; "Now if folks want to shoot deer at 1000yds + with .338 Lapua Mags or .50 cal's, use anemometers, range finders, have spotters and use their bullet drop charts while shooting deer, fine, fair play. But don't call it stalking, please don't, because it isn't." I'm glad you think the same.

nice work old boy yea pretty much agree with your long range shooting because im the same. But I would like to add that it is a whole other discipline not always wrong so long as the shooter has the gear and the experience to pull it off as humanly as possible. To get there it takes (or should take) a lot of time and money on the range in all conditions. The trick is knowing what you can and can't do for the sake of the animal and being wise enough to walk away after a long hard slog when it doesn't work out. Buy yea closer the better love your work

Thank you for your view on longrange shooting, i`m of the same opinion as you :-) I had the privilege to hunt in your beautiful country last year, and considering how hard you have to work for free range trophies it´s even more respectable not just to try to be lucky. Will continue to watch your outstanding videos, thank you for taking us on your adventures!

Awesome footage Khan, and good on you for not taking the shot. I've recently been bitten by the long range bug, mainly because of what, and where I hunt. Practice, practice, practice is all I can say. I'm starting close and stretching the legs once I have my shooting system down pat. As you say, buying the latest gear doesn't make you a better hunter, and it definitely doesn't make a better shooter! Keep them coming mate, that was an awesome trip, loved it.

Good videos man. Fair enough and good on you for not taking the shot. I definitely think working on long range hunting and being good at it is awesome and it can be a great way to hunt. I also 100% agree that it can become a trend and that there's huge potential for beginners to make mistakes. Good on you for bringing it up and setting the example.

I must say that your not too bad with a camera, very natural and easy to follow. THANKS! Done the long-range thing for few years, you really do get caught up in all the toys and bullshit of it. But fell back to the close range and bush stalks (hunting not shooting), it takes skill to shoot long range but takes skill, wit and knowledge to really hunt and stalk an animal in its own environment which you display and talk of. Awesome keep up the great work

Khan, enjoyed you talking about what you think young hunters who're new to the sport should learn. I am a young hunter new to the sport and appreciated the comment and gave me some guidance. I've picked up Bruce Banwell's books as well as the Lentle/Saxton one on deer. Besides this, what kind of advice do you have for guys who are just getting started? I'm very eager to learn and believe in mastering the basics, as I follow similar approaches in fly fishing, spearfishing and other endeavours. I'd appreciate any hint. Thank you -- keep up the beautiful content.

Thierry Meier keep it simple mate.. learn the basics. Learn to bush hunt! If you can stalk and shoot a deer up close in the bush then any other hunting is easy

Nice video Khan, great hunt too. Love the closing! Agree with your points on long range shooting, particularly the impact on young guys thinking that's how it's done. All my hunting is up close and personal.....Probably because i'm too cheap to buy all the fancy long range shit!

Lots of respect re not taking the long shot. It can be very tempting to have go. As you stated, the margin for error increases significantly beyond 300m especially in tough country like that. And even if you do manage a kill shot, retrieving the animal is often a lot more difficult as well.

Awesome vid bro! I agree with your choice on not taking the shot based on knowing your own limits. Im a strong believer in shooting WITHIN your capabilities and if your gonna push the limits on the shot then take the time to push it on the targets in all sorts of conditions FIRST!!! and i agree with you 100% that everyone should learn the bush hunting/stalking skills first! Im a long ranger myself now, but thats certainly not how i started. Keep the 2 arts separate, and remember what type of artist you are because all hunting is an art! # "Kleen kill or Not at all"

Awesome adventure guys, could I suggest using a walking stick of sorts to help make the creek crossings safer. I've been using one for a few years now. I'ts saved me many a time from arsing over lol.

LEGACY NZ-OFFICIAL hey mate, agree on the walking stick but we had dozens of creek crossings in between dense bush bashing so carrying a stick wasn’t practical. Youl see in The landsburough vid we used sticks

Good yarn on the long range shooting. I'm new to hunting and to be honest although the guys on TV and KZread make hunting look easy, until you get out there you quickly find out how hard it really is. I prefer to bush stalk, I cant sit on my ass for hours on end is my issue i think.

I fully agree on the long range shooting mate...its not just the distance you hafta worry about it's the angle too....good choice nothing worse than seeing a wounded animal run away and hey that wounded animal has happened to me once years ago and that one bad decision to take the shot haunts me to this day.

Love your videos and your openness about the places you are hunting, especially your tahr videos. I'm living vicariously through you :) Totally agree about your philosophy on long-range shooting. That really touches on the ethics of hunting, when you're hunting if you can't get close to the animal, then you shoudln't be shooting it. Nowadays the 6.5 creedmoor is in vogue and EVERYONE seems to be caught up on the idea of hitting an animal at over 500 plus meters. My only criticism is please post more vids! Lol. BTW what kind of spotting scope are you using?

Great video! Loved how you hunted Chamois just for trophies. If you want meat shoot some goats I say. And what you said about long range shooting was dead right. 300 yard plus shots you gotta have really done your homework and you can still miss and have no idea why. Great vid!!

I had to stop watching and write a comment, i fully agree with your long range "rant" as you call it. But in saying that i am a long range hunter, but also love a up close and personal hunt too. I shoot rabbits out to 700yards, but always pick my shots on big animals, as wounding the animal is just crap. It all comes down to the day, and where you are if the long range shot can be taken on an animal humanly, or if it can even be retrieved. Young guys 'think' you just go buy a rifle and going hunting, it isn't just that simple, and not at an animals cost of dying slowly or just leaving it on the hill because you cant get to it. Say that you can loss animals at 30yards, shit does happen sometimes. I also have shot rabbits with my bow from 15 yds to 45yds, and love the rush even on small game, been full draw on a Sambar twice, at 30yds but didn't take the shot as my buck fever kicked in, never get that with the rifle anymore, but the bow I sure do. Just the chase gives it to you. Love the vids, and well said on the long range, even though i do shoot long range, but spend hours shooting small game etc and pick my days, never want to wound animals.
