As a non native speaker the calm pace and clear pronounciation makes live easier for me but it also gives the content a more relevant undertone than e.g. a rather hectic Tim Pool or Shadiversity.

Indeed, i think we should honor our odds and expand into the cosmos, the day we leave the earth and settle somewhere else will be the day we immortalize the human race and it's history. Even if earth becomes once again unable to provide us shelter, we will be somewhere else.

Theists will thank a creator, as the saying goes 'we are truly grateful for the gift of life'. But from whom? It's really logical to ascribe it all to a Creator, the probability of this happening by chance is very tiny, everything that makes life possible is miraculous.

When I took my geology course in college in 1961-1962, my professor suggested that MAYBE the continents fit together somehow and that Wegener may have been right! It wasn’t until the late 1960s that the theories of continental drift and of plate techtonics were accepted. I remember this well.

I was about 10 in the mid 60s and I managed to get hold of a National Geographic that explained it . At the same time an extinct Airline ,BOAC ,had an ad for crossing the Atlantic Ocean quickly. They jokingly called it the Atlantic River . I immediately understood the concept of plate tectonics and this at at time when most adults didn’t even know about it.

After years of learning about plate tectonics and volcanos this video explained for the first time why one plate subducts and one stays up. Hooray for heavy and light rocks. Every few sentences you tell me about fascinating stuff I didn't know and it just keeps on coming. I'm glued to your channel now.

I never felt so proud and privileged being alive and being born on this amazing planet.

This series really deserves millions of subscribers. Period.

This series is so good. I've watched a few docos on the subject and none mentioned the old expanding Earth theory of continental separation, or that an entire culture was wiped out by Tambora. Makes you wonder what else other docos are leaving out!

Thanks for the lecture! Geologists are ignoring that the Moon existed in Archean eon. And she has been 15 times closer to the Earth. The tidal forces was tremedously bigger than now: They're affected not just to hydrosphere but to a fresh lithosphere, as well. Twice a day a giant walls of rock 3 miles high rolls upon the surface. It does not allowed to crust solidify and break it into proto-continental plates.

Great video, I can't believe this channel doesn't have more subs and views! Just keep up the good work, I'm sure it will pay off soon. I just wanted to mention there are new theories about the formation of planets and Earth's prehistory, and what forces have shaped our solar system and planets. I find it utterly fascinating that earthquakes are now being actually *predicted* (!) using satellites which monitor electrostatic signals coming from the Earth's crust (China owns one of these satellites), so there seems to be an electric aspect to the universe (largely) unaccounted for by geology, not to mention cosmology. Electric Universe theory / Plasma Cosmology provides a compelling addition to our current understanding, if you keep an open mind I think most people will find it raises many, many valid questions and usually has the predictive power as an interdisciplinary scientific model to provide surprising and intuitive answers. Many mysteries of the universe and our solar system begin to click into place in a very satisfying way where some aspects of acedemic science fall short. Symbols of an Alien Sky was my intro to this electric model, though admittedly it's more focused on comparative mythology and archeological subjects which when examined through a holistic lens actually construct a very different narrative about our planet's relatively recent ancient history. It's on the Thunderbolts Project channel for free (lots of other science vids there too). Worth a watch for those open to and interested in new ideas about our solar system and planet.

I really think a fun game to play with middle-highschool students is the teacher giving them concepts that ultimstely plate tectonics answers and having the kids act as a scientific community, trying to figure things out. The only thing is they can't answer with plate tectonics.

I don't think the moon's gravity has as big an effect as the forces under the mantle, but it probably does have some part to play

An excerpt from Science Daily... www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/04/160401075118.htm ... "The action of the Moon, overlooked until now, is thought to have compensated for this difference and kept the geodynamo active. Work is published on 30 march 2016 in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters." It says... "The Earth's mantle deforms elastically due to tidal effects caused by the Moon. The researchers show that this effect could continuously stimulate the motion of the liquid iron alloy making up the outer core etc etc."

Well, the moon was a lot closer to the Earth in the very distant past. And it's effect is proportional to the square of its distance from the Earth.

Before the oceans apppeared the moon actually created a tidal effect on the magma and as the oceans grew it had less effect on the magam and more on the oceans and for over a billion years the moon created oceans tidal waves hundreds of miles high that cooled more and more landmass untill the earth crust became so think that the magam could only come up by weak spots and thats how the techtonic plates created themselves and the fire belt was born .

@@waynetemplar2183 True but the techtonic plates were born because of the how clost to the earth the moon was and how High the oceans tidal wave were . for over a billion years the moon created a permanent planetary size hurricane with waves as high as 10 km which slammed on the earth crust and cooledit even more to the point that the mental couldn't crack it anymore and had to find weak spot to get to the surface therefore creating the the plate boundries now called the fire belt .

Belgian cartographers, not dutch who suggested plate tectonics. I am absolutely loving your documentaries!

My friends and I did a dnd campaign set around Mount tambora in late 1811 in an alternate timeline.. we didn't actually know the name of the mountain until one of us had to ask a trader where we were. The game then turned into how can you convince an entire population to evacuate when your just a couple of foreigners who don't know crap about the culture

This series is just spellbinding.

Fantastic narrating and content

The volcano eruption at the start of the video made a disaster in Europe. After the Napoleonic wars food was short and the eruption made it worse, many died from hunger and disease in the following years. It was the perfect storm in the 19th century for Europe and it fuelled the emigration for the USA.
