Were The Ancient Romans Nordic? The Truth

So, when we imagine the ancient Romans, particularly the ruling elites is this how we should imagine them? Where the ancient Romans Nordic? Did they belong to the Nordic phenotype?

It doesn't matter which side of the spectrum they come from, lies are lies and we attack all without hesitation.
The idea that the ancient Romans belonged to the Nordic Phenotypic type is part of a theoretical system which generally speaking was born in Germany and fostered by the likes of Hans Friedrich Karl Gunther. We are specifically referring to the set of theories called Nordicism.
The ancient Romans being Nordic, with a stronger enphasis on the ruling elite, is an easy claim to attack. To address it we'll utilize a systemic data analysis model in order to evaluate the coherence of such investigation system, and its sub routinse. And whether or not an argument is contradictory in its premises once looked upon throgh the perspective of iconographic, literarly and material evidence, including DNA analysis. We will call this a logic investigation sequence and consisntence check criteria.

Conclusion
The Flux of Time
The past is a dynamic continuum. As humans stride across the centuries, a complete ethnic monolithic fulcre of civilization, particularly when core societies become multi cultural due to foreign individual relocation patterns, conquest, citizenship extention and other factors, is difficult to identify, but it's usually present.
Power, success and wealth attracts immigration. The city of Rome also attracted people from various regions throughout the Mediterranean basin and a certain degree of cosmopolitanism would have been encountered in the city. However, at least when it comes to Italian Romans, a long lasting continuum of the genetic fabric of the population appears to be demonstrable regardless of barbaric invasions, slave influx and other external demographic pressures. The imprint these phenomena had on the original population chains in the peninsula is not zero but was never overwhelming.
However a claim such as "the Romans were Nordic before immigration and foreign influx within the population ethnic strata" requires a statistically significant core of identifiable factors, in order to be proven. A strong discrepancy between objective data and theoretical postulation will have to be negligible for the hypothesis to stand.
Moreover in order to determine the ethnic consistency of the Italian Roman people we will make use of several resources. Literary evidence, iconographic evidence, genetic evidence. Then we'll formulate a consistent hypothesis based on the examination of all reliable information.
Political groups on all sides often make use of vague statements as a form of mass manipulation, due to the general lack of resource access and higher understanding of these historical concepts by the masses. Let's rectify that.
Furthermore, if the Romans were indeed Nordic, we would also need to see a high level of Germanic socio linguistic interference and cultural heritage retention.
What is the integer which would correctly describe the phenomenon. One step at a time.
What is Nordicism?
Although on this video we are specifically focusing on the claims concernig the Ancient Romans, I'd like to spend a word or two to frame our discussion when it comes to what Nordicism is and what it claimed.
Nordicism as a school of thought was born between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century within several cultural circles, in Europe and America, having among its main proponents, the American Madison Grant, the Frenchman De Gobineau and the German Eugen Fischer.
According to this ideology, the Nordic Phenotypes were intellectually and culturally superior to all others. The Nordic type being superior to all also meant that no other “lesser” racial groups had been able to do as much historically; and so the wake of this hypothesis the Roman empire becomes a problem you see. Because how can a Southern European empire be capable of such splendor if they were lesser beings?
Gunther in his "Rassenkunde Europas" translated in English as The Racial Elements of European History, Attributes the creative force of history to the Nordic element within the ethnic fabric of mankind, and within a picture that tries to claim ethnic appropriation of all the winners, of course the Romans would be included.

I have a critique regarding your definitions and contextual substantiation used for your approach to the subject. You limited the frame of reference to the roman society as it was during the time of its empire, not the origins of its people. You need to go much further back in time to find the origins of both greek and roman people. What the claim about nordic ancestry asserted, as in the definition developed during the 19th century you used, had a different assertion in that the mediteranian greeks and romans shared more ancient common roots. That was what you were supposed to critique. Not the descriptions the romans used to distinguish themselves in their chronicles. You yourself bear the resemblance of a yamnaya tribesman as we now generally think them to have appeared. Much diminished in stature of course. No offense. This was a common ancestor. One all europeans share in some part. The early migrations were complex and i assert that your focus of study on rome belies your lack of study of more ancient things. Your definitions were presuming something that produced useless results and muddied the waters on the subject entirely. What i took from this gladly were all the tid bits of info. Much appreciated. But be careful how you construct the framework of your arguments. The conclusions you draw from such things can be lightly discarded. And i think you’re better than that

I'm honestly surprised this's even believed *at all* ; I always just understood the Romans to be of the *Mediterranean* phenotype whatever it's officially called, since the Mediterranean region is where the Italian peninsula is. Maybe the *Germanic* tribes they conquered belonged to the Nordic phenotype, but I *doubt* the Romans would've wanted to mix *their* blood with that of the "barbarians"; and thus think they would've stuck with just their *own* , or people of the same phenotype like the *Greeks* . I say all this as someone who has a strong *English* presence in my blood, and thus, I'm probably of the Nordic phenotype myself because the English often intermingled with the Norsemen and were *already* of the same phenotype beforehand. I don't have blue eyes or blonde hair (I wish I did), but that's probably because of the fact that I also have strong *Chaktaw* (probably misspelled it) native American presence in my blood too.

You forgot to debunk the whole "Nordic elites ruled over Rome" by mentioning all the non Roman Emperors such as Constantine the Great who was born in Moesia and that he was of illiro-Thracian Balkanic origin. Septimius Severus who was born in Leptis Magna Libya and who was of Italic-Punic origin. Caracalla who was of semetic origin (Punic/Carthaginian-Arab) Justinian(Eastern Roman emperor) who was born in Tauresium present day near the city of Skopje Macedonia etc.

Possibly the best representation of this is in HBO’s Rome: a commoner insults blonde haired Vorenus by telling him to “get back to Gaul, ginger knob.” He retorts by admitting he does have a Gallic air about him, but he is a true Roman nonetheless. It’s a simple kind of nuance extremists can’t catch: there were blondes in Italy, there always have been, just statistically less than Northern Europe, hence why blonde hair will always have a Northern association in those lands despite certainly being present there.

It's kind of depressing how both sides of the political divide seem to want to rewrite history. You've got some people on the right that want to mitigate slavery and the killing of natives while elements of the left shoehorn in diversity and modern attitudes that didnt exist at the time. Both attempt to whitewash history. This recent obsession with Scandinavism kind of bugs me. On one hand you've got the romantics who attempt to portray the Vikings as honorable warriors in tune with nature who fought for glory rather than the pirates and raiders they were. On the other hand you've got the covert racists like this video's subject who've just repackaged Aryanism rather lazily.

I really think it is not. I feel your same bug regarding it. I can't cope with young fellows trend involving vikings and glorifying them. To me, it's another face of fascism. Nordic supremacists find barbarianism superior to civilisation, but have proved they are superior civilisation builders, even to Rome. Metatron’s argument rests upon a strawman of motive, which he attacks. So, he can argue about the demographics of Rome, but has not argued against any claim to supremacy at least from the White perspective.

To understand, modern Europeans are the result of mixing three clearly differentiated genetic components, Western Hunter Gatherers (WHG), Anatolian Farmers and Steppe Western Herder (Indo-European). The Anatolians emigrated to Europe where they mixed with the WHG, giving rise to the so-called Early European Framer (EEF), later from the Pontic steppe the Indo-Europeans emigrated, Indo-European men have children with EEF women. The Nordic Phenotype arises 2000 years after the Indo-European expansion, in the Corderd Ware culture, ancestors of the Baltics and the Germanics. The Celts and the Italians are characterized by having greater DNA of Anatolian origin, the paternal lineage of the Italians came from the Russian steppe and Italian women from the Bronze Age have children. The Celts arise in Central Europe. The Nordic phenotype never existed in Italy, in fact today's Italians are whiter than their Neolithic ancestors.

This allows you to focus on the truly amazing content you’ve become known for: deeply researched, analytical and unbiased in as many ways as possible, easily identified types of evidence you use, etc. All neatly packed into some arcane or very famous historical, religious or warfare and cultural videos that only you seem capable of making. Though I probably should agree to the Nordic superiority stuff 😅, ethnicity is not as straight forward as people seems to think. My ancestors were all Norwegians, with records back to early Viking age. Everyone in my family has hair that is brown/dark blonde with a tint of red. We’re born with black hair, it becomes white/yellow before puberty, then it starts to darken.. At 45, my hair is now dark brown. A few years ago someone did DNA analysis of bones from several Viking graves and what they found was a very ethnically diverse group. My ancestors had DNA from all over Europe and Asia. If someone lives here in the north where their skin barely experience sunshine since our summers are short and cold, they will turn white. My Vietnamese wife has already become quite white and she’s only been here for 5 years. Our son looks pure Nordic, with brown hair that is getting more light colored. White skin is simply skin that is trying to compensate for the lack of sunlight, so it can produce more d-vitamins. If we stopped all immigration now, everyone up here would be similarly white within a few centuries, even if they were pure black when they came here.

I have an interesting theory about the Nordicism theory. It is that at the turn of the century you had many "Germanic" empires. The British, the very quickly rising Germans, as well as the expansive and growing American Republic. At this time as well the Russians were facing growing instability and the Chinese were, at this point, unable to stem the tide of European powers in Asia. So they, with only their current world as a reference, had come to the conclusion that only "Nordic" peoples could have built stable empires. Even with all evidence pointing to it being a silly concept I think it is an interesting theory when put into the fairly chaotic timeframe it was created in.

"There is no my truth or her truth. There is just objective truth." Very beautifully said. It seems in this period and culture, we are confusing objective truth with emotional truth. We all have our emotional truths. These are statements expressing the emotions we are feeling as a person, this is very polarizing and individualistic, which separates us from the whole. While on the other hand, there is the objective truth of a situation that is not bogged down by the weight of emotions. Both are extremely important, we should not deny our emotions, which would lead to blockages within ourselves that manifest in a negative way, or in a way that we don't want. Sorry to get a bit metaphysical, but the ethereal realm is all around us and plays into everything we do, whether you believe it or not. But what about the notion, "History is written by the winners."

While I totally agree with your arguments, I would just like to add that while I know that certain phenotypes were more prevalent in certain areas of Europe back then. I would like to point out that we been trading people back and forth around Europe since at least the bronze age, probably before. So, while darker hair with tan skin maybe a southern European trait and lighter skin with blonde or red hair a northern one, you could find both in either place. Phenotypes are just products of isolation, adaptation, selection, diet and time, so what I'm trying to say is that we are all still European and Human! So, like Metatron tries to say, can't we all just get along and stop counting our differences, instead focus on what we have in common, while also learning to accept facts!

Yes we are human. But there is no European concept before 17th century. You can't apply those things to ancient Greeks and Romans, for them cletics, germanic, iderian, balkan, Baltic, Nordic and slavic tribes are different and uncivilized savages. By this modern European concept you can't steal Greek and Roman history as yours. You should be proud about your Nordic tribes.

I was merely speaking to blood ancestry and to add to what you are saying, all of these groups are made up. While certain characteristics are more prevalent in certain parts of Europe, all types can be found in where in Europe, like a redhead in Italy or brown eyes in Norway. These features do not directly determine what group you belong to, it can only help narrow down where they maybe from. All Caucasians belong to the same group of humans the migrated to Europe back before the last ice age, so all have a common ancestry. For clarity I'm of Anglo-German Heritage with a dash of native American and I'm proud of all parts of my heritage. So, while I don't condone misappropriating other's culture, I feel anyone no matter their heritage, can use and appreciate other people's culture in a respectful way.@@roh-mj6em

Although there wasn't really ever such a divide that Northern Europe was all blonde and Southern Europe all dark and they eventually mixed. The whole spectrum existed in Europe since the Neolithic at least and became more and more blonde in the north during the Bronze Age onwards, as Indo-Europeans turned to farming. And diseases became more in common as population increased, which put additional evolutionary presssure to obtain more vitamin D thus driving the population towards depigmentation. This evolutionary pressure was lesser of course in the Mediterranean, but sharing similar ancestral components with the rest of the Europe they obviously shared similar phenotypes with the North. Italy probably was probably at it's blondest after the Germanic invasions, especially during the Middle Ages when it was more northern-shifted than today or the Roman ages.
