Nobody was really surprised by the other team.Sure they would use a rush defence, with players selected for that job. The England team has very good players. an excellent coach playing a style they understand. Their front row is already beaten, just not up to it, the rush defence is very taxing on fitness, and the ABs have a few answers from the first game. Pity about our halfbacks.

The All blacks need a12 like Ma Nonu, that can take one the line/ rush defence. Their will come a whole in that aggressive defence line.

Loved the way the ABs raised the tempo in the last 20, similar to what Razor did with the Crusaders. Haven’t seen anything like that from the ABs in a long time. The crowd certainly sensed it. They were going off their rocker. England were struggling to match that intenisty, like a battered boxer against the ropes. There’s Super rugby/URC/European club intensity, international rugby intensity, then All Black intensity!!

Unfortunately, an AB team at 75% still beats most other teams. They’ll master the rush defence one day.. However, international rugby is closer today - and that’s a good thing. Too much AB dominance or Bok dominance isn’t good for rugby. Here hoping for a good game at Eden Park. Much love from a Soutie (SA Pom).

I have trouble believing that all of you who write negative comments are true AB fans, or have played or coached rugby, my tactic of beating the rush defence would be use the kick to the corner aimed at kicking a 50 20, that is the part of the field from where tries are scored and we should ensure that 1 or 2 of our backs can bang over a drop kick when required, I have no problem with winning close game byway of a field goal.

Settle down & give it a bit of time. I thought we lacked 1 or 2 ball running forwards which was obvious with how much difference Aumua made when he came on. Our wide back play went alright but will improve & needed to be mixed up with some closer in forward runners so that it wasn't so predictable going wide then wide again every time but calm down you'll give yourself a heart attack with such bitterness.

Often kiwis are like children who think their Dad is Super man..😂...ABs had a few days to prepare for top tier team who already played 6 games together this season.

I agree with Marshy, I believe that once Razor and the All Blacks unlock the keys to the rush defence, it's game over, not only for England but for ALL teams using it. We need to adapt and be more innovative. When we find a way to nullify the rush defence, we reclaim the number 1 position in World Rugby!

If the rush defense is varied in it's application . It becomes difficult predict and there for hard to beat .

In the early 80s Waikato under George Simpkin the rush defence was not as rushed as today but we moved the backline closer to each other and stood up flat closer to the opposition back line this bought the opposition also closer but gave them less time to cater for fast hands and miss out moves and more room on the outside for blindside winger and fullback to enter the backline outside centre or wing.Maybe they could try this.

The only thing I saw different was the forward receivers standing out significantly wider than normal… all this did was give the defence more time and take the impact away of short inside balls.

Yeah I noticed that too. Some people were saying the ABs attacking shapes was exactly the same as last year but you are right, there was a subtle change, very subtle though and it was what you mentioned with the forwards runners ranging out wider. And the ABs looked to be going wide wide too but yeah they need to go through the middle first and mix there game up. They look like easy pickings on defence for the opposition, the ABs.

Okay so we need to find a way to beat this rush defence. My question is how exactly do we do it? How? What specific tactics should we employ?

I'm no expert, but I think one way to counter it is to have a very accurate kicking game to go over the "rush" and into the space that is created when 4+ players jump out of the gate.

In my opinion there is 3 ways to counter rush Defence : 1. Play through it ,short direct carries off 9 , pick and go’s etc. get Asafa amua mark telea pick and go’s direct 2. Box kick the shit out of the ball. Literally play 0 rugby , give the opposition nothing to physically hit which frustrates them and prefably kick closer to the touch line. This is how England played that really effective game against the Springboks in the semi. 3. Swing them side to side constantly. Cross kicks galore . Stay deeper and swing them side to side . This is how the bulls beat Leinsters rush d easily. In my opinion no.2 is incredibly effective but most people think is dreadfully boring and wouldn’t accept all blacks playing this way.

We need bigger more abrasive straight running battering rams to get us over the gainline for a number of phases before playing the wide game. Too often we try the wide game off static or back foot ball and no go forward momentum and it just goes side to side and ends with someone isolated. It was the first run of the season and we got the win though

Doing the same thing and expecting a different result. They were literally going from touch line to touch line going wide, wide in there own half and only gained like 5 metres tye whole time then got penalised at the ruck, half time score 10 all. Enough said!

but clearly the all blacks had put some thought into how to counter the rush defence, it's odd that marshall didn't see it. did he expect that having a plan would mean perfection & total dominance?

The ABs were blood lucky and if England's goalkicker hadn't left 10 points out there from missed attempts they would in my opinion had a fully deserved win.

New Zealand just don't have great players anymore, good but not great. 10 years ago they had many great players. Im sure that will change in the future.

What i thought was crazy is we went wide with no set pieces attempting to beat englands rush defence. Hate to say it, but that's a problem with our 10 /12 and 15. Still tho, typical first test of the year. Huge problems for england now, AB's by 20.

Your kicking game also need to be on top, place the ball behind that rush defence. Or kick for the corners, put them under pressure,than you will see a change in the defensive game.

It will be interesting to know what style ABs will play.. Nothing new was shown in the first test from the ABs...ABS ATTACK needs to change to counter rush defense...we still haven't learnt from the past...no excuses!! We need to play smart... ALL THE BEST ABS!

I think NZ coaches have failed miserably against rush defence systems that they revert back to ehat they know rather than innovate and change the way we want to play.

It’s a contrast worth noting: we have focused on our attack and trying to use it to counter the rush defence since 2017; the Springboks adopted a rush defence first from 2018 and now they’re reintroducing their attacking prowess on the back of it in the forwards first and now the backs. Look at the contrast in trend of those two teams.

The reason why the halfback had to kick or why we kicked the ball Justin was because our attack in the 2nd half was going lateral and not getting over the advantage line - the English umbrella rush defence was just picking us off!!!!

The previous match against England was a head scratcher, we gave up a massive lead to draw-good as a loss. England is not a team that we have dominated on the field or the score board.

I think the reason the AB's dont have that dominance anymore is that right now we have the Best SA team in history, the best Irish team in history, the best french team in history and a couple of others that are not far off including England. We also have Austalian rugby at its weakest ever and they are our main sparing partners. We have great coaches like Foster and Razor and we have a group of awesome players but we dont have McCaw and Carter anymore. I don't think its realistic to expect the AB's to win 90% of tests anymore. The environment is completely different. The rest of the rugby world has learned from our period of dominance and margins are so much smaller now.

A couple of old haters complaining that a new 10 day old group couldn't fix what their mates in the old boys club didn't address for 7 years 😂 We came out after halftime with an adjustment, better than we can say for Hansen or Fosters entire tenures.

I agree the all blacks have always had that history and aura, but if we being honest, they haven’t been that now for the past couple of years. Even going in to the World Cup last year, they weren’t outright favourites like previous world cups. The important thing now is to acknowledge where they are, and try to work themselves back there, but it’s gonna take a while .

The imposter coach has gone after turning NZ into a third tier rugby nation. I fully expect Robertson, the consummate winner, to begin rebuilding the high standards the once mighty All Blacks were always known and feared for. They will again become the innovators and leaders of world rugby that other teams had to continually catch up to, just that once they had caught up the All Blacks had already reinvented themselves.

You can dance around it as much as you like, but a couple of basic truths need stating: a lot of NZ rugby is weak on core fundamentals - lineout, passing, defensive alignment, strategic place-kicking and increasingly goalkicking are areas of consistent concern. This was reflected in the ABs performance: tactically naive kicking, clumsy handling, and a misfiring lineout were all in evidence, coupled with a one-dimensional wide-to-wide pattern on attack, the sort of rudimentary stuff you'd expect to see at NPC level, which consistently led to ball carriers being isolated on the wing and pushed to touch. Scott Robertson and his coaching staff's collective lack of exposure to test footie was also evident, with cautious tactics and a reliance on the scrum positively screaming provincial rugger thinking, and "Razor" owes much to the average nature of England's own attack, along with their boneheaded strategy of playing without the ball, which allowed his maiden ABs to notch a win despite playing well below both their own potential and public expectations.

This talk about us being better prepared for the English rush defence is so much crap. We all know that at international test rugby level you have to get the fundamentals right first. There are a ton of priorities the new coaching group had to get to grips with quickly. And in case you didn't notice - we changed tactics after half time. But I guess you have to have something to talk about to hold your relevancy ay guys? The All Blacks played great against a top 3 European side thats had months together to plan and prepare for the ABs - and still couldn't get the job done. You guys need to give yourselves a stiff uppercut.

NZ teams beating up on AUS and Pacific franchises doesn’t test your forward packs to the point where they would have been playing in SA against those big guys

NZ have been exporting talented players and coaches for decades to markets that are much better funded. Of course that gap was always going to close. The All Blacks don't have a god given right to be #1, that much should be clear after losing 7 of 10 RWC campaigns, including every single one that Marshall played in. Makes the All Black coach job maybe the only job in sport as bad as the England football manager job to hold, because of how badly you turn on him when they have the audacity to not win every game. Wayne Smith, Ian Foster, John Hart and even Graham Henry after 2007, can attest to that. And when you lose, never seen anything like it, you'd thing there had been an actual national catastrophe.
