    Great analysis. Re: pacing after the crash - if you are on the front you get to set the pace. If a team doesn't like it they can go to the front and set the pace themselves. If you want to take chances at the back of the group that's on you, not on the team eating wind at the front.

    Remember that Israel Premier Tech was not pushing just before the crash which stopped half of peloton at 95 Kms far from the end. Usually nobody push and instead allows the peloton to recover. They took the chance because a big crash and that is not fair. Should the race be already blew up with attacks than it would have been normal but taking your chance because of a big crash so far and when the pace was increased all of the sudden it is to me absolutely unfair

    @@michealissa1638 Oh, I definitely agree he's the big favorite for the Worlds RR with Remco as 2nd favorite. Just think it will be too tough for MVDP and Wout. As for the Giro-Tour, because of the unfortunate accident that happened at Itzulia, this is definitely Pog's best chance of ticking off the double. However, it will still be hard of course. It is still 42 total days of avoiding crashes and other bad luck and even if Vingegaard might not ride the Tour, Roglic and Remco are no slouch and they are still going to be really tough rivals for Pog, especially with a Giro in his legs. I'm still giving Pog a good chance, of course, of taking the Giro-Tour double.

    Van der Poel had a team mate who was on the front for quite a long time by himself. Did a few more turns when FdJ starting helping, then got dropped. I think Alpecin did make the right call though. The gap was too big. Without the help of the Bahrain team car, Van der Poel's group would never have gotten back on. Alpecin would have taken too much of a risk sacrificing their riders for a small chance of bringing Van der Poel back.

    How can the drafting behind a team car to close a 1 min gap go unnoticed and especially unpunished?

  • @fork8972

    @fork8972

    13 күн бұрын

    It's a bit more nuanced if you watch the full race footage closely. At 74.2km before the line, all the cars are held up due to the narrow road, after which they all pass to the front again (idk why, that's a bit strange from the jury) when the road opens up. At 73km the MVDP group gets behind a car (as also shown here), the Bahrain car, at the same time the convoy completely closes before/catches up to the Pidcock group. That's where the drafting starts, at that point the first group slowed down a lot already and the gap is only 22 seconds. Exact same amount of drafting for the MVDP group as the Pidcock group, certainly no difference there. The MVDP group is then behind the Bahrain car for less than 10 seconds, before the Bahrain car completely catches up to the convoy. Edit: the remark of Patrick that the MVDP group wasn't subject to the barrage is certainly incorrect, as you can clearly see just before 74.2km, where all the cars are behind the MVDP group already. There's really no difference in the amount of drafting between the Pidcock and MVDP group. The only question is why they did undo the barrage after only a few kms.

    @@franzroth2830 yes, i agree. weaker riders makes exciting races. only sanremo was fun from men's side. cos even without wva, there were still alotta strong riders. maybe ronde as well, cos it rained and we got to see mvdp rail those corners like a madman. every other races has been dull this spring. and women's races in comparison has been far more exciting to watch. especially, watching sdworx lose is my guilty pleasure. needless to say, this spring ardennes classics - amstel, fleche and lbl has been a delight. lets hope, vollering and kopecky don't return to their old forms, where they dominated every race. then it'd be like watching mens race, only shorter, slower and stupider. just like when sdworx dominated in 2023 season.

    @@sudsehunMVDP was pacing on every climb and came back every time after being dropped. Seemed very effective - although he had to do most of the work in chasing each time, he seemed completely in control - and it even seemed that he had something left in the tank given that easy sprint in the end He is just too heavy for those longer steep climbs to follow Poga, especially after the extra effort to get back at the front after being held up. He needs to put up insane numbers for numerous minutes to keep up with a Poga that’s going full gas on such climbs - I think that it’s just impossible for him with his current weight and prep (heavily focused on Flanders and Roubaix) to not be dropped on these longer steep climbs by a Poga in this shape

    @@Tim-K. i dn't really get why he raced lbl. he could've easily won amstel (which is still big since he's dutch). and considering that he's usually picky abt the races he races, i feel like there's an ulterior motive. my conspiracy theory brain feels like maybe he's collecting data cos this year he looks stronger than the last. just like in e3 and gent where he made unnecessary 60k solo attacks. i feel like they were preperation for the olympics cos the olympics parcour is too easy. he needs to make a long range attack.

  • @Tim-K.

    @@sudsehun I don’t know the parcours of the olympics road race and I think he isn’t even sure if he will ride it (since he still wants to win the one on a mountainbike). I agree that if he tried harder, he could’ve won the AGR. But you must not forget that that race can be very tactical and pretty much everyone was riding against him and he was isolated (no teammates whatsoever when riders slipped away on the flat). Unless you do a crazy solo like Poga last year, when you’re MVDP or Poga, you need to do a lot of work reeling in attacks while others sit on your wheel. I think MVDP felt that it just wasn’t worth the extreme amount of effort, especially given the little chance he had, because of tactics, at AGR. Besides, he has already won it and it is no monument (which seems to be his focus, plus WC and olympics, since last year) MVDP has been riding smarter and more conservative since last year in most races (apart from E3 and Gent Wevelgem - the latter he lost because of doing so much more work than the others), but he used to be far more wild, impatient and uncontrolled in his efforts. E.g. the AGR he won, he unnecessarily wasted a lot of energy earlier on. In the Tirreno he once did a crazy big solo in horrible conditions and completely hit the wall at the end just won, a few seconds in front of Poga. The day before his first appearance at LBL, where he finished 6th, he had done a 80+km solo to win the BinckBank tour

    Giro yes. Tour, it depens who will recover to be on the start line? In long climbs, Jonas is still the favorite. And I would not underestimate Roglic. But if Jonas does not make it or is not in good shape, Pogacar may very well win both. We will see. He is in fantastic shape and of course the best rider overall, but that is no news.
