Were Geisha Prostitutes?
Ойын-сауық
The answer is yes and no.
In Japan there used to be government official prostitutes called 遊女Yujyo and 花魁 Oiran. On the other hand, 芸者 Geisha as the name represents, were women who were professional entertainers of music and dancing (mainly at dinner parties). Geisha are not in the prostitution business, and it was their pride that they could attract people through their art alone.
In reality though, there were some who provided sexual services for extra money, or because they were forced by their customers.
However the geisha working at the 遊郭 yukaku (government approved red-light district), were considered to be at a lower rank than yujyo and oiran. Therefore, geisha having sexual relationships with customers was considered a violation of the jobs of the yujyo, and would be subject to severe punishment.
But keep in mind that this is only within the yukaku, and the local geisha in the countryside provided prostitution services regularly.

Thank you for clearing this up! I did a paper on this many years ago in high school when I was obsessed with them after watching Memoirs of A Geisha. Learned a lot from doing my own research and kept correcting people over time when they’d confuse Geisha and Oiran. Very informative short ☺️

@KikyoSamaLover05 That movie is horrifically, laughably inaccurate.
"Forced by their customers" sounds an awful lot like rape, not a willing transaction for money.
Is one of those things where the line between geisha and oiran is vague at times, while geisha aren't supposed to practice prostitution behind the curtains some still did, and many high rank oiran where known for their artistic capabilities outside of their sexual services. Hence why many tend to confuse both.

I always think of that movie Sakuran with Anna Tsuchiya when I think of Oiran. I know memoirs of a geisha had these kind of mixed up, even though it was supposedly written with consultation from a geisha (she went on to say it was all fabricated and wrote her own book). Either way thanks for this!

Fascinating how similar this is to "Actresses" from Europe back then, they were technically not prostitutes but entertainers, but wer also (in)famous for providing "private shows" and the source of the saying "Said the Actress to the Bishop" which has evolved into "That's what She's said".

Man humans never change
Basically when there were oiran, they didn’t want geiko and maiko and geisha to compete for prostitution customers, so they’d punish the geiko and maiko and geisha that did…but then historically apparently the lower priced prostitution services of geisha and geiko and maiko won and that is why there aren’t any oiran in modern japan.
Thank you for saying things as they are without sugar coating 🙏🏼
It's basically like how all Eagles are birds but not all birds are eagles
I watched an educational special on geisha on PBS, which explained the geisha were skilled entertainers who sometimes also offered sexual services. The geisha is the perfect woman made real. Sometimes she is a hired companion in modern dress. She might need to know how to golf and light a cigarette in an artistic manner. She might need to have knowledge of her client's interests. She might even become a wealthy man's mistress. A geisha can work as long as she can, regardless of age! The special had an interview with a ninety year old working geisha who was designated a national treasure! The special also explained that geisha became disrespected in Western culture because of the occupation of Japan after WWII, when any Japanese woman could "put on lipstick and a kimono and call herself a geisha." The ignorant Western men didn't know these common women were imposters.
still confused about them. but I'm leaving it alone.
this made me realize why idol culture is a big thing in japan
I was born and raised in Japan, but actually I almost never see geisha on a daily basis. I have lived in Japan for 19 years and have only seen geisha twice.
Thank you for going into this! And clarifying this. They were classy and talented hella artistic Renaissance ladies. If you could afford some extra loving, no one is knocking them.
