Welsh road left with eight speed limit changes in two miles after 20mph policy

The roll-out of the Welsh Government’s 20mph policy has left one road with eight speed limit changes in less than two miles.
Drivers on the stretch of the A422 in the Vale of Glamorgan are now faced with several different speed limits that change from 60mph to 20mph within a matter of minutes.
The road does not have speed cameras, however.
The fast-changing limits on the road, near Aberthin, have been branded unclear and ambiguous by motoring groups, with local drivers saying they have been left baffled.
The Welsh Government introduced a blanket 20mph speed limit on all restricted roads, typically roads with lampposts, in September.

If there are going to be multiple speed limit changes, and Swansea is notorious for this, then there must be multiple repeater signs.

UK road speed limits are so confusing and complex however it does create BILLIONS of pounds in FINES for the local authorities/ treasury

And THAT is something we all know. It never was/ is about safety; that's bollocks. It's ALL to do with generating revenue..and that's the only thing it's about..££££££

Whilst I acknowledge that speed limits are often there for safety, speed fines are a money making racket. For example, why is the punishment for speeding always a fine, how about community service? If everybody stuck to the speed limits local authorities would be out of pocket by 100s of thousands if not millions....its a racket. What's my comments got to do with this post? Where there's lots of variable speed limits there will be lots of speed cameras

I actually just read the video description text 😅 Seems like a lot of sections of road that could be 30 are now 20? Seems like a lazy way to make decisions.

What I can't understand is why 20 mph when most of the roadside is rural, the 20 past busy tight bits and schools I am ok with but most of the footage showed houses well away from the road so presumably that is where most of the pedestrians are.

I got overtaken by a school bus. I was doing 20 in what I thought was a 20. The bus must have doing about 40 so it must have been a 40 even with houses on either side.. Oh well. I just let him bully past with the passengers laughing and waving.

Will be interesting to see if these reduced limits actually save lives, if they do then fair enough but this information needs to be available and needs to be completely unbiased. We have homeless people dying from the cold, perhaps this money could have better been spent elsewhere. My opinion only.

As the accident rate* in 20 mph limits went up 26% in 2 years, some time ago, I, too, will be interested to see the impact. However, we will probably have to wait for at least 3 years for statistics to start to look meaningful, and we won't know about how the increased air pollution (which some residents, especially on steeper roads, are already complaining about) will impact health, for decades. Bear in mind, though, that the emergency services are voicing concerns over increased response times as a result of this retrograde, simplistic, and ill thought out policy. * I thought they meant more lower impact accidents, but fewer fatalities, but I was wrong. Part of the problem is that on lower speed limit roads, pedestrians have become blase about traffic and just walk out without taking any responsibility for their own safety. However, I wonder if this attitude is then contributing to accidents on higher speed limit roads. The other week I went round a bend on a national speed limit and saw 2 pedestrians walking the other way on the other side of the road (this would have been correct of the road had curved the other way), with their backs to the traffic. Both were in the road, when there was a grassy area they could have been walking on, they were 2 abreast and the one on the outside was looking down at her phone!

The 20 mph has been introduced as a safety measure because wales is about to employ thousands of workers to cut back hedges and install road safety devices on all roads to avoid any more unnecessary tragedies taking place.
