Welsh anthem (Land of my fathers)

Музыка

"Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau", usually translated as "Land of My Fathers", is, by tradition, the national anthem of Wales. The words were written by Evan James and the tune composed by his son, James James, both residents of Pontypridd, Glamorgan, in January 1856. The earliest written copy survives and is part of the collections of the National Library of Wales.
Lyrics:
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.
Translation:
The old land of my fathers is dear to me,
Land of poets and singers, famous men of renown;
Her brave warriors, very splendid patriots,
For freedom shed their blood.
Nation, Nation, I pledge to my Nation.
While the sea [is] a wall to the pure, most loved land,
O may the old language endure.

    @@stilllaughing3959 Why you don't have a Celtic culture in Scotland? Well, let's begin: 1) Almost NO Celtic language ability, instant disqualifier as it's the most important factor in Celticness (do not tell me you do, because less than 2% of your entire population has ANY ability in a Celtic language, there are literally more Slavs in Scotland than Celts) 2) Most of you don't even have Celtic names, you overwhelmingly have Germanic compound names coming from the English language (Thomson, Wilson, Smith, Robertson, Anderson etc. etc.) 3) Socially speaking you're virtually indistinguishable from England 4) You are over 50% descended genetically from Germanic peoples who settled Scotland between the 500s and the 1200s. Over 50%, that's higher than Austria's Germanic descent. That's equal levels with England.

I immediately said I would cheer for Wales - they're never in the such a tournament, Aaron Ramsey is a favorite midfielder of mine (and boy did he deliver), it'll be great! That first Wales game, hearing all the Welsh in the crowd and on the pitch sing that anthem (which is gorgeous, and I'm honestly jealous of - the Dutch national athem is a dispassionate snooze about one bloke and includes fealty to the king of Spain), I knew I made the right choice.

    If you think the two are comparable you are a fool. The queen means nothing to me and god does not exist so our national anthem is pointless before it even starts. Musically it is unmeritorious and the words invoke at best tedium and at worst resentment. The Scottish and the Welsh anthems have evolved out of a meaningful and nationally significant context for their people. Gsq has not. As the name suggests it is about an individual, or at best the office of the crown, and has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual people of the nation. It is in stark contrast to the anthems of the other home nations.

    Tyvm Mr Execman much appreciated ! As a half Celt 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 this moves me for a deeper reason . The reason nobody can sing like the Welsh is very profound. They would sing on their way home from the Mines. Like a beautiful bird in a gilded cage , you can’t keep them down. “He who would be happy will always find a song to sing.” When I sat my English Literature ‘O’ Level at College we had to do a book on Shakespeare, but I noticed there was an alternative Question on John Goldsworthy,s “Strife “ In The Industrial Revolution up to 1933. About careless Capitalism and the working class survival. In 3 main parts. The Class Struggle. In The Industrial Revolution there was a Celtic Diaspora. They were termed “Welsh Cattle” Roberts was a man of dignity within his own home. Thus really it was The Class Struggle to survive. That is why Land of My Fathers and Myfanwy is dear to me. You can’t knock a good un down , because they will always get back up and dust themselves down. I thought I’m not going to write about Henry , I will take you on with John Goldsworthys Strife. Because it’s ALL our fight ! I obtained a B so was happy enough. If you listen to Land of My Fathers and Myfanwy by The Neath Male Voice Choir , you cannot be unmoved !
