Wellington Flat Tour + Cost! | New Zealand

Kia ora,
Thanks for joining me for another New Zealand based video! I thought it might be interesting/informative to share a tour of our flat and a detailed look at the cost of living for those interested or intending to flat in Wellington. For reference, all prices discussed are in New Zealand Dollars (NZD).
From my experience, the cost and quality of flats in Wellington varies tremendously, especially if you are willing to share a house with others. There is really no constant price range for space and quality that I have found. We moved once while we were in New Zealand (from an old flat to this one), but have TONS of experience looking at different flats due to the very hectic flatting market at the time we were looking. I'm happy to answer any/all questions that you might have about flatting in Welly :).
Thanks for tuning in! Your likes, comments and subscriptions are always very appreciated :).
Sarah

Sounds like Welly is similar if not a little cheaper than Auckland. We paid $850 a week for our one-bad house in South Auckland! Yours looks nice though and those stairs are definitely worth the view 😊

Thank you for the feedback! Best of luck searching for a place. Rent tends to be a lot cheaper when you leave the city which is nice :)

2 bedroom places in Wellington average NZ$750/week, which is the highest and most expensive average in the entire country!! While Auckland & Christchurch enjoy a much lower average of NZ$500/week for a 2 bedroom with better value for money. The average hourly pay rate per adult is $30/hour (median) so yes lower than the mean calculation the government uses. Only a fraction of the NZ population are doctors or get six figure salaries.

Hey Sarah, considering the housing prices Vs housing quality , expenses and in general the quality of living , which place would you recommend to finally settle down - NZ or Canada ?

Hello, that is such a tricky question without a simple answer. But, to try to simplify it I would choose Canada for quality of living (physical structures like houses) and I think that quality of life depends on what you value and where in Canada/NZ you would want to settle. My life in New Zealand was slower paced and simpler. There was far less of a consumer culture and way more access to nature, which I loved. I am from Southern Ontario so in comparison to here, the quality of life was better in Wellington. However, there are lots of small towns in New Zealand that are fun to visit but I would never want to live in. Compared to those, Ontario is definitely better. I am also in the process of moving to BC where there is way more access to nature (and hopefully less of a consumer culture), so I don't know how BC and Wellington will compare. I will say that there are very few cities in New Zealand that I would ever live full-time in. Wellington was a dream, but in terms of ever wanting to change it up, the number of other places in New Zealand that I would be interested in (at least while in my twenties) is limited. It is also hard to justify spending money to purchase a house in New Zealand when the quality of the home is so incredibly poor. But the landscape, culture, and people in New Zealand are all so beautiful. I honestly don't think I can answer your question about the quality of life (as evidenced by my extremely long winded answer), but I do hope that my response has provided some insight.

Hey Sarah, thank you so much for taking out time to reply. Totally understand where you’re coming from. There are pros and cons to living in both places that have very different climatic conditions but apart from the environmental factors, the housing conditions & pricing definitely plays a huge role in decision making. So it’s quite good to know the viewpoint of someone who’s lived in both the places. Appreciate the detailed info !

Great video but could have been better if you also mention the Food, transport, eating out, other expenses since the title is living cost, not only the flat cost 😅

Hi Yogi, thanks for your feedback. Perhaps I will change the title. I plan to do another video on those costs as I didn't want this video to get too long. :)

Are you still having lockdowns from time to time in Welly?.

Great question! We have been in Canada since this past August (2022), but there have been no lockdowns in Welly since we had a 3-week one in August 2021. I don't anticipate that there will be any more unless something drastically changes with the covid situation.
