As a little boy my parents taught us to put our cart back where they belong. They also taught me that if you are crossing the parking lot and a car is coming to stop and let the car go and then cross and if the car does stop for you, give them a little wave to say thank you. I am amazed on how many people walk right out in front of cars like they are not even there (especially in parking lots). To this day, when driving if someone takes the time to stop and let me out in traffic I give them a little wave just to say thanks, just as my dad did 50 years ago. To all the parents out there, do the right thing your kids will learn from you and hopefully do the right things too.

Seeing shopping carts left all over the parking lot just ticks me off. I am 70 years old and very arthritic. If I can push the cart to where it belongs there is no excuse for healthy people to leave them by their car. So disrespectful.

Aldi has the right idea. Make them pay for using the cart - refund if the cart is returned. Many times people who are finished reloading [in the parking lot] will offer their carts to those making their way to the store. It's fun to do the quarter swap - a good way to be neighborly . . .Godspeed Cornstars.

As a kid maybe 9-10 years old my mom had a bad back. We used to go to a store called "The Mart" in Grafton, MA shopping. We would get in the store and no carts because nobody brought them back. She would send me out to get some carts for Mr. Roth that owned the store. All the time she was shopping I was gathering carts from the parking lot and get big old smiles from old man Roth every batch of carts I brought back in the store.

The only grocery store that does that over here in the States is Aldi. It took people a bit to get used to it and remember to have a quarter ready! And people still leave carts out at Aldi, but usually it's a little act of kindness for the next person to not need a quarter vs being lazy.

In the past, I haven't always returned my cart, but I heard someone on youtube say that one day they felt that they "should" be doing that, and after that started returning their cart, so that made me stop and think that I should always do that too. A funny sort of off shoot story is that there was one grocery store parking lot we used to go to, where all of a sudden the carts would almost seem to decide on their own (I know it sounds weird) to just quickly take off all of a sudden, and start rolling fast across the parking lot, sometimes running into cars parked there. It didn't happen with all of them at the same time, but just one would do it. I had mentioned that to my husband, and the last time he and my daughter were there (several years ago now, so I don't know if it's still happening) they also saw the same thing happen. I know wind can cause carts to turn and go sometimes, but this was different. They almost looked as if they were being pushed quickly. It was really odd. Haven't seen that happen at any other grocery store parking lot like it did at that one either. Yeah wind might cause them to move somewhat, but not quickly start rolling at high speed across the parking lot though lol.

I once heard someone say that when you don't put your cart away in the corral that it's like stealing from the merchant because now they have to pay an employee to do it. Truth is the employee could be paid for doing some other job instead of running around the parking lot to gather the stray carts. Same thing as throwing out the garbage or not putting an item back where you got it when you decide you don't want it. It's a matter of integrity.

Hi Daddy CS. I'm the self checkout Goddess at a busy grocery store. The cost of food includes the cost of hiring people to run around and gather carts, pick up garbage, clean the place. When someone leaves a cart rolling around the parking lot or throws garbage around, they are driving up the cost of your food. A civil society would teach its children to be more civilized. I grew up on a ranch and spent all the time I could out with my dad. I really enjoy hanging out with you and your team...

That is a good question that has been asked in many classrooms for years and years. When presented with this scenario, someone can decide to do what is best for just them or they can decide to do what will help everyone as collective whole. Some people do not have the mindset to feel obligated to help the collective whole (society). Some people do. I am proud to say I am someone who is willing to think about the collective whole. I put my cart back because it helps others and takes little effort on my part. We just need to help the others change their mindset so they see why it is important to work as a collective whole (society).

I usually put the cart in the area with other carts, except at our local WalMart, where I will leave it near the handicap parking space where we usually park, because so many people that have mobility issues like to use a cart to walk into the store. I’m glad you bought the subject up. Canadians are always returning the shopping cart to their proper places after unloading them in our car. For instance, Costco has places to return your cards through the parking lot and they’re not far from your car. But I have noticed Costco shoppers leaving the cards anywhere in the lot, which is disgusting when you come in to park your car there’s always a shopping cart in the way. Also, Costco has a shopping cart that prevents the wheels from going around when leaving the lot so therefore their carts are always in the lots not somewhere down the street a mile or so.Other grocery stores has a 25 deposit return when you return a shopping cart that seems to help customers return the shopping cart to the proper area after unloading which is a good idea. Home Depot, Lowe’s and other lumber stores always have a place to return your car and most people do that that I can see. I have no proof, but I think people who don’t return their shopping cart to the proper areas, and garbage out the window of their cars are foreigners. I like to believe the Canadians has more respect. That’s my opinion.

I always put the cart either in the rack or take it back inside the store, rain or shine. I remember back to when the box boy would push your cart to your car and unload it for you, no tip expected, it was just their job. Then people would take the carts to their cars themselves and bring the cart back inside the store. Next they provided cart racks or corrals. The common thought was that was really nice of the store to make it easier for the customer by not having to take the cart back inside the store, so of course you put your cart in the designated area! They provided a courtesy for me and I would be courteous enough to put it where it belongs. It is a real pet peeve of mine when people don't put carts where they belong. I think it is the epitome of laziness!

Cart in dedicated corral as described earlier. A " runaway " cart can do considerable damage if it hits a vehicle. On the matter of grocery carts; the first time I ever went to an Aldi's, I was blown away by the shopping cart rack; all the carts had a receptacle you had to put a quarter in to get it released from the rack. When you brought it back and put it in the rack, it gave you your quarter back. The store manager said that got most of the carts back with no help from his store personnel- only about 10% needed picking up. Then I saw the same thing for baggage carts at the Omaha airport. They worked the same way, but it was the gate workers and car rental people who rounded them up to make the money for lunch.

I find it amazing that most senior citizens (like myself) tend to return their carts to where they should be. The other day I mentioned to a women (can't call her a lady) that she shouldn't leave her cart in the middle of the parking space beside her because someone will want that spot. Her reply was the store hires people to come and corral the carts and return them to the store and if she returned it to where it should be she would be causing someone to lose their job. The warped reasoning she used to justify her laziness floored. I think that the Aldi's store has the right idea where you have to unlock the cart with a quarter to be able to use it. When you are done you return it to the cart line you use the key in the cart in front of yours to get your quarter back. It is seldom you will see any carts in the parking lot. A side benefit is a lot of people who don't want to return the cart offer them to someone else going in to shop so it saves them that quarter. I know it's not much money but I am the type of person who will bend down (not easy at my age) and pick up pennies that people drop on the ground.

DC- Shopping carts- One of my earliest jobs (I think I am your age), was as a shopping cart wrangler. The thing was, we had a retirement cewnter about a mile away from the store. Every day, I'd go down there, and every day, I'd finf 15 to 20 carts to bring back. DC- Do you know how difficult it was to wrangle those carts across TWO major streets, in normal city traffic? Wanna guess how hard it was in 2 or 3 feet of snow??? Wanna guess what happened if we didn't go over there every day? Yeah! 30 to 50 carts, or two trips. I am not goping to lie- it was not enjoyable. So, a small part of me says, "yeah, leave it in the parking lot", and, yeah, I do just that. And, the carts cannot be taken out of the parking lot, as there is some manner of sensor that will lock up the wheel. Also, the store I shop at? It hire people with special needs and abilities to get the carts. It also hire retired people to get those carts. If we all put the carts back, what do you think happens to those folks? Yeah! I am protecting their jobs!

In regards to the shopping cart issue. I typically require help to get to my truck. And the person that helps usually returns the cart.

Some places, you pay a dollar to use a cart. You get the dollar back when you deposit the cart in it's proper place.

At our local stores I will take the cart back in the store! At big stores like walmart I still put the cart as neat as possible in the cart rack!

I do 2 things: Park as far away as best as I can, especially at home centers, where no one wants to park and always take a cart from the cart corral and return it to the same place. In essence, I avoid the disrespect and the callousness of others because as I have had too many cars damaged by them.

Sadly, in England most supermarket trolleys require a coin to be put into a lock to get it out of the rack, and if you want that coin back you have to bring it back. Not surprisingly we don't have many trolleys left by cars. For those supermarkets that don't do this you often see trolleys all over the car park and even by the side of the road up to a mile away as scroats use them to go home with! As we have no policemen patrolling they know they will get away with it.

That's the problem with those stiff tyres, sometimes in high grass or weeds you don't notice they are going flat until they separate from the rim.

I like it when baskets are left in the parking lot so when I exit my car I have one to grab on to, to steady me when walking right away. The store I go to have lower paid people to gather them, A couple of the people are slow mentally so the store will hire them to do menial tasks.

I always take my cart to the cart corral (unless I’m picking up an online order, which is most of the time)…or i take it back inside the store if there is no other place to leave it (like Walgreens).

I always get a cart on my way in the store! It helps folks, alot. There is always someone finished putting groceries in the car. I'll grab one from the corral if need be. If everyone did this there would be fewer carts to deal with in the parking lot.

Daddy Cornstar, I always take my grocery store buggy back into the store after I unload my groceries into my car. I never leave it in the parking lot or in the outdoor holding area. I do this to help the grocery store attendants and it gives me twice as many steps for exercise.

In Australia, you have to insert a coin to unlock a cart in the store and then reattach it to a line of nested carts to get your coin back. Good idea

I watched a woman leave one randomly in a parking place in a WAL-MART. She went to Home Depot right after leaving WAL-MART. I zip tied a grocery cart to her passenger front car door. Myself and 5 other people waited for the woman to come out of Home Depot. I put her cart in the corral at Wal-Mart.

I or my hubby always puts the carts either in the cart parking spot or park them in the store! This is common courtesy so they won’t roll and hit someone else’s car and put a dent in it.

Some vendors in Canada now charge you $1 or $2 to get a shopping cart because the lazy shopper left them all over the lot. You get the fee back when you return it.

I know the moral correct answer is, yes I take personal responsibility and put the cart in the proper place (most of the time) but to point out one thing, I remember when a bag boy always walked you to your car and put your groceries in it then took the cart back. Now you have to check yourself out and bag your own groceries. I mean what the heck? I do not understand how it is that customer service has gone down the drain while prices have increased and wages have decreased. The profit margins have gone insane because the whole country is forced to feed a stock market to give the illusion of prosperity.
