The "no self-promo" rule is a fairly standard, sensible rule, the mods are just being exceptionally overzealous with it. Best example would be any discord server that has a dedicated self promo channel and doesn't allow it anywhere else. Having an achievement to share is one thing, but making a post along the lines of "hey, come to my channel on [insert content creation platform here], I do x and y" can pretty easily lead to a significant portion of the feed being taken up by what are effectively just topic relevant ads, especially with larger communities. This isn't necessarily bad, it's not a universal rule for a reason after all, but if the goal is to have a place where people can share their experiences, accomplishments and opinions like r/Minecraft seems to be, I can see self promo impeding on that goal.

considering the original purpose of reddit was to be a digg-like site, which was long ago at the time already a replacement for the REALLY old stuff like web directories, it's a bunch of bullshit. Self promotion used to be an allowable thing as long as you weren't using a community solely for self promotion, or in obvious cases like this where you just made a project in a game and wanted to show people.

Years ago, I made real life TNT yeeter from paper. Back when the meme was still funny. I thought it was nice cute thing to post but r/Minecraft removed it for being irrelevant. It was flaged correctly, wasn't spam, was minecraft related. I still have no idea why really it got taken down.

Also the good types of posts are made to bring people together with no intent to farm for upvotes. Even if you make something cool, doing it just to get people to press some stupid arrow button or getting people to join a server or something like that is what should be taken down Things made for the community to show off amazing things created just for fun and to create a sense of community should stay

Reddit as a whole has atrophied so far in quality over the past 5 years. Problematic moderators for subs and terrible choices from the company shadow just the overall shift of original creators focusing on other platforms now.

Yeah, similar thing happened to me on another gaming subreddit. If you make an amazing project or something you are proud of in-game you are forbidden to share your passion on subreddits with this rule in place (and moderators who rule this way). Counter intuitively this really promotes having multiple accounts with different usernames on different platforms (or otherwise obscuring that you, the creator of something, is also posting about it). But with a strict reading of the rule this is an even worse offense (trying to obscure that you are "self-promoting"). Its very strange, especially when other subreddits (like arts) have rules that only the original creator is allowed to post their stuff.

I agree, it would make more sense for Minecraft creations to be moderated like when original creations are only allowed to be posted by the original creator/artist on non-gaming subs since they are normally original and creative works. Minecraft redstone is a more technical type of creation than a detailed house, but original redstone/command block builds are still creative works in my eyes.

There's at least a few, though I wouldn't be able to tell you which anymore, "art adjacent" subs (and /r/digitalpainting that doesn't allow you to even put YOUR NAME on any art you post) that don't allow you to post your own work as well, which is absolutely ridiculous. Word of mouth is crucial to getting yourself out there no matter what you create, but if you aren't allowed to share it anywhere do people (being the mods of these subs) honestly expect that your tiny amount of viewers are going to? I just don't get this thought process at all, deal with it on a per person basis, based on how often and how much effort is put into whatever they make, not blanket rules that hurt people legitimately trying.

It's okay for some art spaces to be dedicated to simply appreciating art instead of being avenues for artists to grow their audience. There's already other places that serve as the latter.

Now it's "self-promotion". Years ago I built my Survival mage-base as concentric walls containing different districts for the villagers, farms, animal pens, a huge forest in the outer ring with every tree and the mine entrance. That was two weeks of gameplay. I posted a screenshot on r/Minecraft and it got taken down because it it was "low-effort", while in the top there were posts like "I beat the Ender Dragon for the first time", or a screenshot of the most basic dirt house. That's when I left that sub. I deleted my Reddit account since because other subs started to have the same level of moderation as r/Minecraft plus the fact some subs were getting new waves of users that were utterly annoying.

Oh, is that why the 3D render I made of the Minecraft logo made of blocks got taken down for seemingly no reason?

Not every reddit community is bad. In fact no community is bad. Just specific people in it who give the community as a whole a bad reputation. I have been in some subreddits that have bad reputations and a lot of the time, everyone there are always really nice and friendly. These communities are unlucky to have some horrible few who ruin the reputation. It's because bad things always get lots of attention from outsiders. Good things almost never get noticed outside those communities. It's actually kinda sad.

*@[** 0:54 **]:* This right here hints at a major problem with the moderation system for every sub-Reddit... The moderation system is always a hierarchy, where any higher mod can overrule and even de-mod a lower mod, and the 'top'/'head' mod (who I assume "head" refers to), is nigh-immovable, meaning a 'top' mod can be highly corrupt, and even if the rest of the mod team is kind to the community, that highly corrupt mod basically always wins, just by being on top. Any 'lower' mod who dares to stand up to that 'top' mod can be just de-modded by the 'top' mod. To any 'fallen mods', I would like to hear your side of the 'power mod' issue; it would basically confirm my assumption that most sub-Reddit mods don't have infinite egos, mainly those top mods...

The various uprisings they've had, including the recent one that saw Spez replaced most of them with non-trouble makers (aka the Night of the Broken Broomsticks) are really interesting sagas. I think they simply need to make the rules way more specific as what actually counts as self promotion. There's a difference between showing a build, and asking people to join your SMP. New management means NOTHING if the laws and code aren't changed as well. Look at Any democratic society in the past election cycle. We have all the same problems we had before despite the leadership changing.

@@_weirdoYT Does the modpack have a dynamic sounds or sound physics mod? If so, it was probably from that. Sometimes, sound physics mods play sounds from mobs that are in caves just out of earshot of the player, which prevents the subtitles from showing which side the sound originates.

What exactly even counts as self advertizing anyways? It's not like you can ask for clarification because if you're like me (autistic and trying to see where the line is so i can stand far away from it) and ask what exactly moderators mean with a rule, you get banned with the reason of "trying to figure out how to skirt the rules" Like, no, i'm autistic, your rule is too vague, i don't want to accidentally break the rule because it's so vague i thought i was in the clear when i actually wasn't Edit: For reference i was once banned with no appeals from a discord server once because i was confused by a rule and wanted clarification, and sadly reddit often looks way more strict in many big subreddits, so i only use it to resolve questions quora can't answer

most of the big subreddit would just report you to reddit official admin for "harassment" when you ask for clarification, that's very f up

r/minecraft moderators seem to think that if you made something cool with minecraft, and you can trace any other mention of that something cool anywhere else on the internet, be it a youtube video showing the making off or something else, the something cool becomes advertising for the making off. and not... just... something cool i guess if a parent posts a drawing their child made that's self advertising for their own facebook post announcing they had a child or something

i rarely go on r/minecraft, but when i did yesterday i saw that post and went "huh, wonder what's goin on there." and checked your channel ;-;

r/Minecraft when someone plays Minecraft.

The timing of this was really funny to me bc I was entering the sub for the first time in a while and the first thing I see is that pinned post saying the sub is under new management. I immediately thought "oh it's the milking for clout situation" but then I saw the time stamp was TWO HOURS AGO. And I thought okay, maybe it's glitching out, and clicked on it to corroborate it was , in fact, the clout situation. Imagine my face when I realized it was a totally new and stupid incident over a marvel of Minecraft engineering being taken down for advertisement. AGAIN.

I guess we aren't able to share our own creations then in the subreddit without it being stolen because if no watermark :/

What do you mean imploded 'again'? Seriously that subreddit feels like a cancer ball of all the worst 'must protect the feelings of the select people' Like I would love to build something and show it off with my mod I made.. but good lord, ya can't do that.. and some of the rules are just mental as hell.

We also have these reddit power mods who can ban you from 90% of reddit if they feel the need to.

I remember when they had set up an auto-mod to delete all #saveminecraft posts even though there was no rule against it. Geez. I hope this "new" management does better though (new in quotes because it's basically the same management just with the head moderator gone)

Hey Steveonix, I just want to say thank you for keeping me and so many others up to date on Minecraft and the community. I love the game, but I'm not really that active with it. For a couple years already the most I really engage with the game and community is by watching Hermitcraft and your videos. I don't even use reddit or twitter, so I don't really know where otherwise even to look for Minecraft stuff. So without your videos I would be totally in the dark about the game I love, grew up with and allowed me to claim the title of Gamer. It's really nice to just watch a little video once in a while and to just experience just a smidge more Minecraft then I otherwise would. So thank you. Your work is invaluable and I hope you know that. I just felt the need to tell you that. So once more, finally, from all the people who get to experience just that smidge more Minecraft, thank you. it blows my mind that the rogue mod was still in the team for so long and required 2 high profile posters to get them removed from the team.

some years ago I made a post of a good clip of mine on skywars and it got ~10k upvotes, the mods removed it because hypixel has a link to their site on the scoreboard. I don't think anyone noticed or cared about that. There was no indication on the post for why it was removed, or dm, so I contacted mod mail and had one of the worst discussions I've ever had in my life. They clearly didn't understand that there's a line between self promotion and content that happens to include credit or a link somewhere, it's impossible to draw a hard, objective limit on it that isn't ridiculous. This is the result of them trying to do that.

What's sad is that people actually need such a blunt reminder nowadays. So many people thinking good things are bad, and bad things are good. And they often don't even think about it until you slap 'em with the adjectives to boil it all down.

I love that the new management hoisted the last one because they were over their shit. I hope they make good changes.
