Not shown is the actuating switch for the power on off. A timer circuit, maybe 555, would not be difficult to incorporate to give more precise control to welding parameters. Like simple approach, bare bones, ripe for development. Also nice touch, using HD magnet to hold cells during operation. Thank you.

Great job, Kasyan. This is simple and looks to be working great - exactly what I'm looking for. I'm a little confused about the transformer, though - can you elaborate a little ? You could get a small adjustable timer kit to make sure you only 'fire' 1 second.....

irfz44n can do just as good as the 150n, but costs 0.30$ instead of 1$ on average. the irf540n handles 30 instead of 44 amps while maintaining the 100v drain-source parameter also at 0,30$ instead of 1$ per unit. i wish you could do some switching regulator converting from 220 mains to 0-30 v 200 amps for chargers and arc welders

Unfortunately, you did not show the REAL power supply {1} with which the spot welder functioned, even though it was shown in the schematics. Schematics shows switching to 2X Gates of IRFP150 through 2X300R. the power is still {2} on to the circuit through L1. Need explanation to {1} and {2} Thanks.

Why can't you use 10x 4700 uF caps in parallel (for lower ESR) and connect it to a 12V power supply through a 1 Ohm 10 watt resistor (over 0.56 Coulombs), so as not to overload the power supply and the on/off switch, when charging the caps? Once the caps are charged, you are ready to touch the probes and the charge stored in the caps will rush in and do the spot welding?

  • @johnconrad5487

That will also work. Many ways to skin a cat and he is showing his version which is smaller. In fact with 5 turns on the primary and 1uF cap in the resonant circuit it has 0.5CV^2 = 2.88E-04 Joules; and your version is 3.38J and is comparatively much larger but much less complex. In fact even with 1x4700uF capacitor it has over 1100 times the energy that is contained in his version. So then why even have the cap? You can use a 12V car battery directly without any capacitors. The energy in your version may even be too much and may blow a hole in the battery contact. But again it is something to consider.

So if instead of 12V input battery you use 48V battery and make the transformer primary turns 16+16 keeping the secondary the same copper strip it should work. But now you must use 12V Zener diodes from gate to source to protect the transistor gates.
