Welcome To Our New Channel Homestead Hacks & Hens
I've decided to change the name of my channel to Homestead Hacks & Hens, because I plan on making a lot of laying chicken videos. And with almost 50 years experience, I believe I can help others in this very popular hobby of backyard chicken keeping. I also have another youtube channel called Barnyard Bees, and I have taught a lot of people how to keep bees. please help share our videos. like and subscribe.

I am so glad I found your channel! We are getting baby chicks in the spring. I worked on a chicken farm in the 70's & it was so so much fun! Hard work but the benefits were great!

Hi, I'm 73, retired zoo keeper. I've had chickens since I was 8 yrs old also. I HAVE to give other types of feed. I live in the Adirondack mountains of Upstate New York. Right now, everything is under ice , and snow. I HAVE around 90 birds. 25, are various layer types, the rest are small bantams...... I collect SCRAPS from family and friends, sprout wheat, and other SEED, and sometime ferment the feed. It has gotten ALOT more expensive keeping this amount of birds..... but, people help with the cost of feed for the Great eggs. I REALLY enjoy the chickens, the colors, and breeds that I have are very interesting. Good luck with this channel....! New subscriber.

What can you do to keep hens from pooping in the nest box?

  • @homesteadhacksandhens

Only way is to keep nest boxes low, and the roost high.

Do you have a problem with predators? I want to get some free range laying hens. But we have cats and coyotes in the area, So most likely we’d have to keep them penned.

Just remember.. chicken wire keeps chickens in…not. Predators OUT.. use hardware wire, chain link.. at least 3 feet ground up. In addition to higher chicken wire and a wire roof or actual roofing ( a hawk just went right through my daughters netting in TX)..if you live in the country.

How do they get protein in the winter when bugs are gone?

They get them year round in Ga. You definitely will have to feed protein sources if in cold climate.

This year baby chicks will be around $5 each. Then you need a heat lamp $20. Bag of wood chips $20. Build a 4x4 8 inch high brooder box. A water dispenser $15. And a feeder for around $20.
