Woops, apparently I left y'all hanging by not showing how I got in the car. The answer: unclip the bustle, and put it back on in the parking lot when I reached my destination. Inconvenient, I.Baldwin clearly didn't take automobiles into account while designing 😜 (Bonus Fun Fact: The year 1886 is regarded as the birth year of the modern car....same as this bustle-chair.)

@@pilwsy In this hypothetical situation where you're wearing skirts that hide it but aren't afraid not to be historically accurate, you could technically use those plastic snaps you see on car seats and backpacks to clip and unclip it in seconds to use the bathroom. It's still wildly impractical but for a disabled person the idea that you could just sit down anywhere is a daydream lol. 😂

I thought telemarketing was via the telephone where they call you up. I know television also starts with tele, so I could be wrong on whether they are both lumped into the term, but I thought infomercials were their own thing because it is still not invading your home having to tell a person no, you can just change the channel. Telemarketing is like a cheaper version of a door to door salesman. Whereas infomercials are more like a version of a magazine ad or flyer trying to make you want the product and contact them to buy it no?

I had always thought of a bustle as a place to smuggle things - a turkey, a whole ham, a house elf, whatever. Now, I am seeing it as a perfect sit-upon.

........I may or may not be rewatching this with the thought of making one to hide under my cosplays. And to answer the question about not being allowed to sit, big gowns are tricky to sit in at the best of times, often there aren't enough chairs that are suitable for big gowns at conventions (I've been to a lot with airline or arena style seating where the chair arms make it impossible) and a lot of cons discourage sitting on the floor, especially in areas of high foot traffic for obvious reasons (plus you might not want to risk your dress that way)

When deciding between wearing modern clothing or Late Victorian, “Hmmmmm, pockets AND a chair? Beech, hand me that corset!” 😍😍

The blowtorch was invented in the very late 18th century. They were quite popular and lots of patents were filed for new designs by the mid-19th century, so it's historically accurate!

As a clumsy mofo who frequently accidentally steps on nails (inside a tool bag,) tears my clothes, drives chisels into my fingertips, and drills into my fingernails, Morgan in the shop with beautiful clothes and a blowtorch terrifies me. She's a meticulous champ.

@@tiffytattoo2450 Digital cameras weren't a thing commercially until 1988 and even then most people still used film cameras. It wasn't really until the early 2000s when digital cameras became more common for lots of people to have. So change the dates to mixing the 1980s and 2000s together. ;)

I'm thinking this certainly wouldn't be an "everyday" item of wear, but it would really come in handy for picnics, garden parties, outdoor concerts, etc. The kind of thing where people usually stand around and have either limited seating, or sit on the ground. It would also be very useful for "ladies of a certain age" who tire quickly when out shopping, and may need a seat when none are available. Overall, I think it could be a discreetly incredibly useful device to have! So convenient!

Hunt a Killer comes in the mail but the real mystery is why is Mister Donner’s wood shop packed away?? SOLVE THE MYSTERY!!

The various layers made the chair disappear and it seemed uncomplicated to sit down - I was doubtful of the usefulness of the whole thing until you sat down wherever you wanted with such ease. I definitely need that thing!

When there are no seats left on the bus or train and you sit down on your bustle chair, can you see the looks of jealousy from others who have to stand? I NEED one.

I'm sorry to get you excited. #^-^;# The handmade shoes I wear are pikes which I ordered from an online store based in the UK. And the arches in them are lovely! My only complaint is that the heels have not much room for me to put taps on the bottom to protect the heel. I have designed a lot of boots and heels but I unfortunately don't have the materials or know-how to do more just yet. And I love turnshoes!! Did you use Morgan's video?? I wanted to make some of those next, since they seem like something I could make and they're very cute.

I can actually see this as being useful and even needed. As my mother has aged - she’s 87 now - she tires more easily and finding a place for her to sit is always a chore. We had to get her a walker with a seat. Given that they walked a lot more than we do, and wore more weight in clothing, I can see some enterprising Victorian son saying “here mom let’s just build you something to sit on ‘

Watching the two of them working on a Victorian bustle chair has added a new item on my relationship goals list for finding a significant other.

I loved how you found this old patent and just went "yes I would like to make this" and then produced a video that was full of fun and silly shenanigans to help bring laughs in this time of plague.

Imagine how many wall sitting competitions I could win with that thing on

What a fantastic invention! We are not allowed to sit anywhere in the mall due to Covid restrictions so that would be so wonderful to have after hours of walking and wanting to sit down and not being able to. I would totally order one of these!!!🥰

Apparently our pandemic crafts are reaching the baroque stage. I made a teacup holster this week. And then there’s [gestures]...this.

@@ragnkja ‘Tis for carrying your tea set when not in use. In a very steam punky way. If you plug the phrase into Etsy you’ll see a selection. I collect tea cups from antique shops, so I had lots to play around with. 🍵

There NEEDS to be a modern version of this!!! Especially right now, my local shopping centre, and no doubt others world wide, took away most of the benches cos of social distancing. It's perfect for long shopping trips, days out, picnics for the fussy!, certain cosplays, festivals/ploughing matches/dog shows/events in fields... all the queuing we have to do right now! Something light that folds up a little bit maybe? that can be strapped around your jeans. I NEED ONE! Not that I'm going anywhere fun right now. I'm too excited by this, I feel like I've had too much sugar :-p

"Birthday bandsaw" You're the cutest and that is absolutely the vibe.

It reminds me a little bit of the strapon milking stool an old boss if mine wore while milking the cows.

I love how well it is ‘hidden’ in the skirts, and it looks amazing when you just decide to sit down. People must’ve looked twice when they saw a Victorian-style lady sit down sans chair and then pop her legs over each other. And side note, you and Mr Donner look stinkin’ cute together, clearly both loving the idea of a silly Victorian project together.

You never fail to astonish me Morgan Donner. That collab with your husband is even better. Made me also wonder how often he gets to see you when you are in the sewing room working on a project. Then again: under the pandemic it might be best to have such a distraction like a sewing project. Or making a weird Victorian invention like a bustle chair.

We violin and orchestra teachers always try to get our students to sit in their ‘kangaroo tail.’ I need to add ‘sit on your bustle’ to my sayings. Also since I teach at an all girls school, I could have a whole marching orchestra with bustle chairs built into their concert uniform....hmmm. 😂

Gotta love those bustle skirts...you can literally make a whole chair disappear under them. Ingenius invention though and cudos to you and Mr. Donner, for actually making one.

I love that chemistry dress you’re wearing!!!! (Also, the bustle chair is cool.)

If you are going to have a framework under your dress you might as well be able to use it as a chair since you couldn't really use a regular chair.

Think corner and one edge is 'plain' seam and the other is bound with ribbon that goes over the front and back of it, so you slot the plain seam into the corner of the bound seam.. i think best way i can describe it as a seam Or if you are familiar with anatomy, think joint: one ball and one socket, but in the lap joint its a square peg as the ball and a equally square hole as the socket

Hege Valle not quite. I think what you're describing is the mortise and tennon. The mortise is a rectangular hole and the tennon is the shaved down rectangular tongue sticking off the end of the other piece that fits perfectly inside the mortise to create a really strong joint. A lap joint, also known as a half-lap, is when you have two pieces of the same thickness and you remove half the thickness of each on opposite sides so that when they are put together the overlapped sections is the same thickness as the rest of each piece. I can't really think of an analog in sewing because I can't think of any seams where you'd remove half the thickness of the fabric since that would pretty much destroy the structural integrity of it.

@@auditoryeden Makes me think of mitred corners on things but that's probably because I do mine badly as I forget how/when to do them and come back later to try and make it look nice.

Seeing you sit down on "nothing" is the trippiest thing I've seen in a while. I love it.

1. This whole project was hilarious and now I want one! 2. I loved watching you and your husband working together. You remind me so much of my husband and I! Very sweet and adorable watching you two work out designs together.

I think the reason it's tilted is for the ease of standing back up. The slant let's you slide off a bit more instead of entirely puling it out and up.

Thank you for actually showing how to pin your vest together. I’ve tried to find information on this for years and have never found any help. All the videos I’ve seen have fingers and hands in the way during the actual pinning, and written instructions just say “pin it together” or “pin into the corset/stays”. For someone who’s never seen pins which hold things together while keeping everything but the heads invisible, this was so wonderful and thank you so, so much for this!! Oh, and I love the chair, too. I remember seeing that patent in a “how silly were people in history book” when I was 9 and always thought it was brilliant.

Once again evidence that people in the 1800s where smarter with their clothes.

Boy I'm quite impressed how good and natural that chair looks under the dress. You would never know it was there while you are just walking around. A + chair bustle design!

I fully expected you to attempt sitting while on the escalator! Also those boots are gorgeous!

This would be so perfect for renaissance faires, if those ever come back (damn you, Covid). It would be so convenient, and probably wow a lot of people lol

This was so much fun! Well done!!! The victorians also had a raincoat that turned into a boat, so now I want to know if you could sit on a bustle chair while fishing from a raincoat boat. 🤔🤣

This is obviously going to be the next historical recreator trend because it's so friggin awesome! I've been eyeing that chair bustle for years just waiting for someone to do it and I'm probably not alone there! It's a really convenient thing to wear if you're doing socialy distant gatherings outside :)

I need that in my life! Trully! I guess modern version nowadays would be able to fold some better way 😄 I'll be dreaming of it every time i have to stand and wait for 2,3 hours while my kid's practise finish

It really looks so effortless when you sit! Also completely unexpected, you really wouldn't guess there was a chair instead of a typical bustle!

I am howling at the thought of what went on in people's heads when you got up and there was no chair to be seen.

I love this concept, I am 64 and if I walk too much I need to sit because of a bad back, this would really come in handy. This was so much fun, really enjoy all your videos
