Pattern is from here: www.etsy.com/shop/VintagePatt... (at the time of posting, it looks like it might be out of stock, but keep an eye out!)
I got the curtains from a thrift store, but I believe they are originally from IKEA. The red sheer fabric was also thrifted.

I think the "twinsies" outfit with Abby was very much something that other women of the times would have experienced, they'd have done the pattern *their* way and done this or that differently, so in a way that was like being in the past.

Separates make this three piece "dress" a winner. I love the color of both fabrics and together they are stunning.
When I was 11 years old (70 now) my Mother made my Easter dress from red tablecloth and trimmed it with white lace…all by hand, she did not have a sewing machine! It was beautiful, a labor of love.❤
I gasped and said, “Oh NOOOOOOOO!” out loud when I remembered that velvet has a nap. What a relief that you had enough fabric! That shade of red is to die for.

Lol. I've sewn both velvet and that type of sheer knit shimmer fabric, and I don't think you could have chosen two more difficult ones. I am in awe of your skill in wrangling them through a sewing machine. The top definitely looks better with that sheer blouse underneath. It helps make sense of the under arm opening on the bodice. The over all dress is very pretty and of its time.

AGREED!! 💖
Those soft cotton or rayon petersham ribbons make the most STUNNING hems on circle skirts!! You just iron them in the curve you want and they take the shape like magic. No more bumps or lumps! They are both stable and bouncy, so it gives a touch of movement as well. I adore them. 😍
I always love the way you alter patterns to meet your own esthetic. Skirts made flowier, spaghetti straps added etc. Sometimes it makes it more challenging but you always push through and have beautiful results. 😍
The skirt hook and pin trick is such a great idea for finding the placement of the eye!! Seriously terrific little hack!

I know! I’m going to file that one away. (Hopefully I remember it when my next hook & eye comes up…)
It looks fantastic! And there's something about the triangular nature of the top and the ruffle at the waist that my brain has interpreted as Tinkerbell. If, you know, Tinkerbell cosplayed as Wicked Lady.
And now I have renewed hope that the sort of walking skirt I am making out of blue chenille curtains will be ready (along with the coat I haven't started and the dress I still need to cut parts for) for my trip to Paris in just over two weeks. Too much procraftinating is my downfall 😔

I like the ties better then the weirdly free floating triangles.
Each piece was pretty on its own but all of them together as intended was beautiful. I am glad you did them separately. It will be interesting to she what other uses you come up with for them.
We apparently have similar taste in fabric, we have incidentally picked up the same cheap (but pretty!) fabrics on several occasions and the shiny-sheer red beauty/beast is no exception. I used mine when creating a costume for Masque of the Red Death, and used the extra to make a cloak for a vampire-inspired ballet! (And I agree, creating them as separates makes is much more versatile!) Your final look was very flattering and the depth and play in the colors/textures was super satisfying!
I love you pulling a Maria with your curtains. It feels like a complete fit to type for you. The finished look is wonderful. All the little snippets we've seen of the cruise are so very tantalizing. I'm looking forward to everyone's videos of the big event!
What a coincidence: on my sewing todo list I have a red velvet dress made from thrifted curtains!
Oh my gosh, how did I not know you were on the QM2?! I was on there at the same time, I didn't see you or Abby! I bought a 1920s style sequined dress and adjusted it, it was my one super formal dress for the Masquerade Gala. Yours and Abbys dresses turned out fabulous!
Separates are the BEST! Gorgeous work Lovely! While that silhouette isn't my jam for modern day, I love that you stuck to it. Those separate pieces for the photo shoot at the end are marvelous! I hope you get miles and miles out of them. ❤️
loved that the outfits you were wearing each day I could recognised from previous videos, shows you really do wear what you make and it doesn't just go in the closet after the video is done.
You really ARE Fraulein Maria! Making clothes out of curtains!!! ^_^
Am I at this level of sewing? No. Can I even follow everything she's saying? No. Is this still a satisfying watch? Very much so, yes. 🤗
You and Julie Andrews....lol. Curtains are a fab resource for large amounts of cheap fabric. Also, some shower curtains and tablecloths.
That noise you made lifting the mannequin,a noise every seamstress in history has ever made !
That pin trick is genius
I love the idea of making the garment into separate pieces to easily convert into a variety of other pieces and accessories. That and the whole bit about Sailor moon wicked lady, right when you mentioned her and showed the fabric I immediately saw it. Shhhh I'm a huge sailor moon fan.🌙
The dress is glorious! Am loving the diaphanous fabric under the over bodice. The crescent moon jewelry was the perfect finishing touch.
When the DOG bites, when the BEE stings, when I’m feeeeling saaaaaaad….. If ya know, ya know….. ICONIC
I reckon this should be called pulling a Scarlett lol Love this idea! I once used my grandmothers golden-colored braided curtain tie-backs to fashion myself as Rapunzel haha. What a great use you've made of those drapes!! :)
See, this is why I like to watch your videos. I get to learn all the technical terms for vintage sewing. You know, like . . . "flappening". Love the end result.
I haved missed all my favourite people, but you are all starting to post again now the cruise is over. Loved that you made this as separates, and out of a curtain. Very Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind vibe😀. The end dress is just stunning! And that sheer fabric!!! What a find and so, so worth holding on to for a perfect piece. Damn clever fix with the fraying straps. Thank you so much for showing that. As a cloth doll maker, seam allowance in an itty bitty leg or arm on the side can drive one nuts! Let alone where it chose to do it. And you did it in velvet no less! I bow down. So glad to see y’all having fun. Sorry for fangurling but so happy to see this video.
I remember when you made those curtains
No spoilers, but you are the most wonderful, supportive friend and cabin mate. No 'who wore it best', but your ensemble is stunning, and with the coat, it is divine! I am living for every #cruisevideo.

I love that your tie-dye Marie Antoinette Dress is perfectly fitting to your hair!!! That is soooo beautiful! And as always: great video and tutorial!
The loose sides near the bust (while not my personal fave) are very reminiscent of the Doric chiton worn by Greeks, which was a style that heavily influenced Regency and some Edwardian fashion. It also had some influence on art nouveau, which you can see in the works of Alphonse Mucha or Élisabeth Sonrel. This pattern also nods to the peplos. So while I appreciate the drape, I've personally never cared for it. Probably because all my clothes are too big for me and gap like that, but it just annoys me. Still, it looks lovely~
"I have a week left to make it happen..." You just reminded me of when I decided on a cosplay mashup- Sailor Moon and Doctor Who- and I had the idea to make a Sonic Scepter, and figured the costume wouldn't really work without it. So I worked on that scepter for MONTHS. Started in January. Convention was in August. It lights up, it has moving parts, it's lightweight and easy to carry, and is 100% built up from random bits and pieces of PVC and other stuff. Totally custom made. When I finally realized that the staff was going to work and I could pull it off... I realized I had three weeks left. To make the actual costume. Including a two-tiered fully pleated skirt with horsehair trim, and I was also working with stretchy fabric I'd never used before for the body suit. But DANGIT I did it. I pulled it off. There were lots of shortcuts taken and I beg you not to look too closely at some parts, but I did it! And it was a huge hit. Worn it every year since!
I'm in love with that sheer fabric ❤️ The outfit as a whole works so well but the skirt with the jacket is so stunning
I love how much I learn while I’m here hanging out with you! The amount of creativity and trials and sneaky sewing and ideas is just chefs kiss!❤ Thank you for all you do!
I'm so jealous- but also *living* for the Sailor Moon references!
Thanks for sharing your honest reaction to the droopy bodice! It's grounding to see even experienced makers (doing everything right) dont always love every creation. It's also relatable to witness someone loving a dress in a sketch or on a form, but not being as excited when seeing it on the body. We've all been there and I'm grateful youre willing to film it so folks get a real sense of this adventure of sewing your own clothing!
Okay, but like...that pin trick for the hook and bar! That's genius! I'm totally going to use this trick from now on!
"Sticky uppy" oh, someone who speaks like me! Lovely project.
It turned out so darned cute! Love all the options you have when it comes to wearing each of the bits alone or together. You have me wanting to take a bit of a dive into Victorian men's wear, also because we just bought a mansion built in 1892. :D I want to feel like I fit the space when it comes to holiday parties.

Oh I love how you keep snipping fabric from the curtains, and kept them hanging. Then when you said you forgot about the velvet nape and mis laid the pattern, but you’re gonna use it anyway… nah, recut the panel to match the pile!!! I love your humanness. Thanks for including that!
You have such an unbelievably beautiful soul. Joy, love and light literally shines out through your eyes. Sadly, though only in my 30’s my silly rare genetic syndrome means that my arthritic hands can no longer sew, and this may sound rather obtuse, but I actually mourn for the loss of my needle and sewing machine. For the smell of a fabric shop (like an old library mixed with the aftermath of a cocktail party). I miss my fingers being pricked and the joy in a new pattern. But living vicariously through you is wonderful therapy. Thankyou for sharing your joy with us all. ❤️🐝

"I'm meant to be working on the skirt." Love getting side tracked. With the straps, given that they are tied, you could make them criss cross over your back. That might bring the "neckline" closer in.
The separates idea worked so well. And the thrifted fabric is just divine. The t-tunic shape worked so well with the flare of the peplum top.
Good idea to give yourself waist size closure options for those days when you go to a feast!
In each iteration of Morgan through this video you look so different but so adorable in each. What a beautiful outfit and the cruise sure sounds like fun!
The outfit pieces are beautiful! I get your needing to come around to the silhouette but as a dress it truly brought it all together. Watching you with Abby and friends plus the shots at the dance were delightful and made me smile! 😊 On a funny note, seeing the boat rocking via your camera while you got ready was a trip 😂 Thanks for sharing!!
The whole dress is great but the sheer part over a white top is FIRE!
i love that once you’re on the boat the video has a subtle rock to it, made me a bit sea sick but definitely immersed 😂😂😂
Splendid Work Morgan, I love watching you, Abby Cox, and, Bernadette Banner, It reminds me of my 20's when I worked in a theaters costume department, not to mention various renaissance festivals.. Despite not really applying myself to learn sewing, I was more of a prop, and sometimes puppet maker.. Yet I loved sitting in a room of friends making all kinds of garb and clothing.. I have learned a lot from you all here on KZread..
I absolutely adore the outfit with that white coat and the big hat. Very 1920s look.
I would have totally put some beaded tassels on the ends of those straps!
Love that you made it from a curtain. Reminded me of Scarlet O'Hara, making her green velvet gown from the family heirloom curtains.
I always love seeing u wear ur previous projects as you make ur current projects. I love this set, especially the colour !
21:39 you didnt need to tell me you were on a boat because the rocking background made that very clear 😄 the rocking motion, had I motion sickness, would have been fun watching this part of the video.
Looks amazing with the jacket and big hat.
Yo Morgan, I've just finished a bunch of research for my Masters Thesis on 1915-1918 skirts and the petersham band (exactly like you did) on the inside is 10000% accurate for the time. They might add some boning to it as well...
LOL I clicked on this thinking it was Rachel Maksy, and I was like good lord what did you do to your head now! Hahahaha.
Making them separate pieces - SMART!!!
Morgan, this turned out so beautifully! I love the layering of textures and the colour is 👌🏻 I also want to thank you for masking. As an immuno-compromised human, I really appreciate seeing people continue to wear masks.
The first skirt I ever made in 7th grade had that kind of waistband. It's wear I learned about pronouncing grosgrain ribbon. I still have that skirt, my first ever creation folded neatly in my cedar chest along with my baby blanket and my " bluebird" uniform. Haha. I actually was a pretty small kid back in the day.
Lovely adaptations - the filler top is beautiful, remembering that you are - mmm -fuller figured than the "ideal" from that era. Of course, so were *most* ladies!
You made me pick up sewing, I finished my first piece of clothing recently! Thank you, love the dress, love the video
I think they’re videos you can do a big good, and I like them to make my day
I do like the finished dress, but that jacket & dress combo is still the winner in my less than humble opine.

I love how your hair is just long enough to frame your face. It is so cute!
Agree about the separates. The chiffon blouse with the black trousers look at the end is stunning!!
I'd add beads to those shoulder strings and go all Fortuny. The drapy look of the little vest is exastly right as your blouse is to be all puffy and foldy there. It looks very cute on you!
Kudos to you for wearing your mask ❤ I love your approach to things, delightful to watch and listen to.
I think you've done a Sailor Moon But-Make-it-Vintage! Well done!
To turn straps you can enclose a piece of yarn inside the fabric before sewing, catching one of the ends. Then to turn the strap, you just pull the yarn
it's really cool that you made it modular instead of a single dress! it's such a cool idea! the separate components look super cute with other outfits and it can be worn more often instead of only on formal occasions, very neat
I look terrible in red but that deep red. 😻 It’s beautiful 😻😻😻. The different textures are divine together. Use those long ties, artfully tie two together in back to hold them in place. I like the idea of separate pieces. They looked cool in different outfits 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. You and Abby together as “cousins outfits “ was awesome. I love her skirt 😀
Completely off topic, but listening to you always reminds me of listening to Dana Scully in a very good way :) Love the whole outfit together, and the practicality/versatility of having it as separates.
I can't even tell you how much I love this! It really came together at the end as a cohesive piece and elegant but still interesting look. I also LOVE the quick peek of these pieces separately with other clothes, all of those outfits work too.
