    Excellent! I’ve always wondered which is best. I saved dryer lint for about a year and then used the whole thing on one green wood pile 😂 looks like Vaseline/cotton balls is the way to go. Thanks for sharing!

    Yeah, I was surprised how well the Vaseline technique worked. I want to experiment now with different ways to repel bugs.

    Awesome demonstration, Jen! I use the cotton ball/Vaseline starters all the time at home for the wood stove, BBQ, smoker, et al. My method is to reverse a baggie, put my hand inside, scoop out a blob of Vaseline and turn the bag right side out again before inserting a dozen or so cotton balls, and zipping it up. NO MESS on the hands while massaging it all together. Also - the steel wool needs to be 0000 (four ought) in order to work. It has much more surface area and works *extremely* well. I save my wife's old candle jars, melt the remains on the wood stove, and pour the paraffin over several layers of paper towel. I let it cool and cut into strips to put in my survival pack. Also useful for starting a bigger campfire or bonfire. Thanks for the video, Jen!! Hope you're staying dry!! We're waterlogged here just above Newmarket!! ❤❤

    00 and 000 may also work, and are less prone to rusting from humidity, but I haven't tried them recently. Also. The battery only needs so contact the wool for a brief moment; you could also quickly slide the battery along the wool for minimal discharge time, but a wide ignition area.

    @@realfutbol1 I've had an opened bag of 0000 in the (unheated) garage for at least five years, and there's little to absolutely NO sign of rusting yet.

    Great gear testing video! Another method to experiment with is a pencil and pocket pencil sharpener, especially one made of magnesium. Not only can you sharpen the pencil for tinder, but it works equally well with appropriately sized sticks too. Additionally, you can shave off a little bit of the magnesium at a time for tinder as well.

    We use white pine cones. A lot of creosote in a pine cone. Wife collects a bunch before an outing. If that doesn't work, charcoal lighter fluid. Thanks for your ways of starting.

    Fun video, Jen. If you are a woodworker, or know one, you can bring a bag of shaving from a hand plane. Nice thin, dry starter material you can bring in a baggie.

    That was interesting. The deer poop experiment was akin to the burning of buffalo/cow "chips" in an old western. I am guessing that winter deer pellets might work better due to the more wood fiberous diet. The dryer lint can burn well but it does not last. Thanks for the video.

    @@TheWildYam Given that hares are coprophagous, the second digestion ones might be better. Beaver would also be a source. Admittedly, it is a novelty fire starter, IF it works. But you could find a lot of them in a winter moose yard!

    gotta fray rough up the drygrass/shavings and really cover the battery/steel wool so it makes good contact then once it smokes u have to give it air, similar to starting fire with charcloth.

    I've been going to try hand sanitizer, I actually had a bottle in my hot tent last winter as a backup to try but I only ever used it to clean my hands lol. I did use vaseline and cotton balls a few times I usually have a old pill bottle full of these in my pack , light weight and works great. I have used dryer lint , but I honestly don't find it works well, pretty much the experience you had, need to add something I've added Vaseline too. Interesting to use as a insect repellent might try that. Ive always wanted to try battery and steel wool, but hasn't seem practical to carry along, after seeing your video I think ill just keep in the memory banks lol. Can't light my potato chips they are too good lol. Great video interesting for sure. Hope you have an awesome week

    Dryer lint is mostly synthetic fiber these days instead of cotton so it doesn’t burn well. Your fire starters should be able to be started with a spark from a ferro rod in case all else fails. Does it say if the electric starter can withstand being submerged in water ? like falling in a stream or lake.

  • @TheWildYam

    @TheWildYam

    7 күн бұрын

    I probably wouldn't do that. May not be able to recharge it after. Good at high altitudes and in wind. I guess if it got a bit wet, as long as dried. I bet it would work.

    @@TheWildYam I guess the point I was trying to make is all most all the gadgets can fail including a ferro rod if you don’t know how to use it properly. I wasn’t suggesting you dunk your electronic lighter under water, rather asking if the manufacturer said anything about how water proof it was. It definitely overcomes the wind and altitude issues as you said. I could see turning over a canoe or falling during a river crossing where your pack could accidentally become submerged.
