I have put a 174 weiand blower on my 302 windsor motor and have had nothing but trouble with it. every thing from the teflon strip on the rotor hitting on the rotor housing (the supercharger casing or shell which ever you want to call it) to leaking and don't get me started on the fact it only produces 3 psi and we can not work out why we are leaning towards the belt slipping under load because there belt tensioner isn't the best it's really crap. but even at 3 psi it has given my motor a lot more noticeable power so I'm hoping to fix this problem by putting a hose clamp around the belt tensioner to stop it from being able to move and hopefully it will put more tension on the belt and give me the extra psi I'm missing. if that doesn't work then I guess I've got an expensive new boat anchor. so for those wondering about the weiand under bonnet supercharger really take it from me don't get one source one from the blower shop spend the extra money because you end up spending it on the weiand in the long run. if you want to put one one you do have to have a boost referenced carby which any good carby shop can do for a couple of hundred dollars. it's not as simple as just buying one and bolting it on a standard motor it just doesn't work that way you need your carby done you'll need a decent electronic ignition and a hole lot of patience because there is a lot they don't tell you that you have to do so do yourself a favor ask a lot of questions before you buy one. oh yes they do run oil in them

Chuckman You told me why your having nothing but trouble with your blower in the 1st three sentences. You or someone other has over tighten your blower case 1# cause of problems and when this happens its down hill from there. Send it back to holley and get it fixed. And next time only tighten down to 10 foot pounds and make sure to sping the blower by hand as you tighten it down.

Question!: Have often thought about a blower motor! Setting up a new motor can often see backfiring. With carbs on top of a blower, isn't this just a recipe for a blower explosion?

Do any of these need lube in them or oil lines ran to them?

Twisting GRIPS they do need oil in them but they already come with the oil in them when you purchase one and it is as simple as undoing a bolt on the front of the supercharger to check/fill it and you do not need any oil lines. I bought a 174 weiand under bonnet blower if you have any questions about it I'll do my best to answer them. there is a bit more involved than just buying one and bolting it on like they make out by the time you buy one and put it on have it tuned your looking at around $8000 to $10,000 dollars depending on whether or not you can do most or all of the work yourself. That price includes the purchase of the supercharger

Snakecatcher Chuckman what else is there to do? I have a completely built motor. 358 small block, 11:1 comp ratio. Forged rotating assembly, high flow heads, an oversized solid roller cam and a holley 950 double pumper. Pushing 550 hp, give or take

The number designation of these blowers actually dates back to their original use on Detroit diesel engines! The 6-71 was used on the inline 71 series 6 cyl.GMC (JIMMY) two stroke diesel, with a displacement of 71 c.i. per cylinder. And the 8-71 was used on the same motor with 8 cylinders, still 71 c.i. per cylinder. Thx J

I'm pretty sure (about 95% certain) the 256 intake is only available for big block application. As I had to track one down for my 256 setup.

So where does this blower let the pressure out when you let off the gas? Does it have a built in bypass valve or BOV?

  • @thomasdavis6283

blacktop2001 boost is based on the rpm on the engine on this application. The faster you can spin the blower the more boost is made. Or you can change the pulleys to change the rpm

that didn't really answer my question. So when your engine is at Redline making the most boost and you close the throttle body how does it release the Boost?

  • @MrTNBassmaster

blacktop2001 to answers question with a roots type as in this video boost is made under full throttle and only makes a certain about of boost based on your engine size and the type of pullies you have on your supercharger . And you dont need a boost let off like a turbo i.e. waste gate because they make an uncontrolled about of boost and you need a waste gate. roots superchargers are very fun and additive.

  • @blacktop2001

    @blacktop2001

That didn't really answer my question. Centrifugal superchargers like my procharger d1sc don't need a wastegate but do need a bypass or BOV They make more boost the higher you spin them. Obviously a pulley change would also change boost. When you let off the throttle and close the throttle body the boost has to go somewhere or it will hammer back on the impeller which is still spinning with engine rpm's. This can damage the supercharger. A supercharger that is belt driven is still spinning with engine rpm's. This is why you need a Bypass valve or Blow Off Valve. So my question again what does a roots style supercharger do with the boost its making when you let off the gas? Also I think roots superchargers don't only make boost under full throttle like you say.

Found the answer: Positive displacement superchargers (Twin Screw and Roots) are positioned downstream of the throttle body (suck through). If the throttle body is closed at high rpm, there is no surge problem as with centrifugals (blow through). Centrifugals react against the closed throttle blade(s). This deceleration won't harm the supercharger in any way. However, when coupled to an "idiot underhood filter" that sucks in 200° air (the equivalent to another 20 psi boost), the heat may be a problem for any supercharger - centrifugal, Roots or Twin Screw. We've said it before . . avoid exposed underhood filters in supercharged and non supercharged engines - unless you think that your engine likes all that hot air.

If your carb has bowl-vents the forced air from the charger will blow into them vents and cause the fuel to leak through the seam areas of the carb

Only if your going to blow thru the carb Ie centrifugal as in Paxton, Vorte, Procharger, etc. If its a draw thru then a regular carb will work Roots 3,6,8-71 ,Twin-Screw,Kenny Bell,Whipple,TVS,etc; are all mostly draw thru carb on top designs. The carb just sees a larger engine greater air flow.

Real engine builders wont touch a Weiand super-charger. Not well made and the finish is less quality. If you want blower engine just for looks, and it is mostly Looks and Sounds, not power, the better quality blower is BDS and Blower Shop
