Our son was just recently diagnosed with a.d.h.d and his Dr mentioned you and your studies of neurological disorders in conversation of our son's diagnosis and I became intrigued. He said you have videos on youtube. So here I am trying to learn and better understand my son's condition so I can be a better parent to him. Thanks for your research, knowledge and help.

Hi Dr. Barkley, great summary as always. I have an unrelated question today. I have been interested in watching some older documentaries about ADHD which I have found uploaded to youtube and on the web recently. One that I found was the PBS documentary "Medicating kids" from 2001. The website of this is still up and the video works and there is a very good interview with you on there, unfortunately, much of what is written is still extremely applicable today with the stigma and misunderstandings about ADHD in the general population. What strikes me about the documentaries from this era is that they all refer to ADHD medications as "behavioural medications". This has filled in a gap for me which I hadn't really understood before. But it has brought up another question which I wonder if you could answer perhaps in a future video. My question is this; on speaking to adults who worked in schools in the 80s, 90s, maybe into the early 2000s, and adults who were children at this time, many people report experiencing either directly or witnessing what they all seem to refer to as "the zombie effect" of ADHD medication. That is, that children who take ADHD medication turn into "robots" or "zombies". This seems to have been the cause of a great deal of the concern about ADHD medication. However, in these videos, I don't see this effect at all. The children selected for these videos (or perhaps the children who were likely to be diagnosed at this time) and I'm sure, editing, show the children having severe hyperactivity - climbing on things, putting themselves in dangerous situations, lashing out to other children etc. Then the same child medicated - totally normal. No trace of "zombification" or roboticness at all. Just an ordinary child. So now I'm curious, what are people talking about when they refer to a "zombie effect"? Is this false memory? Is it some kind of placebo because they perceive the medication as being a behavioural control? Is it a contrast because it was only severely hyperactive children who would receive treatment at that time? I understand that too high of a dose may cause a "zombie" type feeling, and I know from my own experience that a stimulant rebound in the afternoon can feel pretty zombie-like. Could it be that many children were on too high of a dose in those previous decades compared to today or because this may have been before longer-acting formulations, children were rebounding? Is there any research or footage which shows this phenomenon? Basically, I'm wondering if it was even real (I am too young to be aware of this myself) and if it was not real, why do so many people seem to share this memory and perception of their "experience" of seeing children medicated for ADHD.

I think what they are referring to is the fact that staring can be a sign of too high a dose in some children with ADHD are a sign that they are quite sensitive to the medication. This seems to occur in about 10% of cases or less in my experience. Also, the drugs were known to blunt emotional expression in a minority of children with ADHD. These side effects were more common with the immediate release medicines in use back then relative to the extended release versions now commonly used. But they can still occur In some cases. This is why some clinicians now will switch to a non stimulant if those side effects can not be manage with dosage adjustments. So I think that may be what you are discussing here. Be well and thanks for watching.

Doctor, I found the treatment for CDS (anecdotally for myself). Nasal corticosteroid (the very basic decongestant ones). Two or three times a day. Works way better than either concerta or amphetamines. I had not felt so alive like this in years.

The second study looking at the frontal lobe ´s activity of asd vs adhd is very interesting. I wonder if they had cases of people who had both asd and adhd and therefore what happens to activity? with one being hyperactive and the other one meant to be hypoactive…Could it balance and seem « normal »? Thanks for sharing all of these

Dr. Barkley, is there any current studies done on ADHD and co-morbid DSPS? It seems like this topic is being more recognized, and the ADDtitude mag recently did an article on this. I wonder what your thoughts are on it?

I am taking medication since 2 years..and it definitely made me function better. It took away my depression , made me accept myself, love me , love my adhd, made me understand and forgive myself my "failures " by understanding the why and not blaming me anymore. But although I have more energy, less sadness I have the feeling I am getting less things done referring to the goals which make me grow professionally. It's really frustrating Is this because I know the why and as I dont feel bad about myself so much anymore I I dont force myself so much anymore to get things done ?? Or has it to do with the type of medication. I am taking Elvanse , sometimes medikinet. What is your opinion on that?

Where are the programs to fix neurotypical children's behaviour which create many of the social problems for ADHD/ASD'ers? It's always about forcing neurodivergent kids to conform to the majority. What's 'normal' is often also utterly absurd, illogical and harmful.
