Simple but great break down of 존댓말 system. Even I as a native Korean got to understand more about Korean language too haha. But I would say there are few more things to add up to make your analysis more complete. One example I can think of now is the difference between ~~요 and ~~세요. this 세 thing if placed right in front of 요 makes the sentence 3rd level polite especially in an imperative sentence as in (level1: 가 go / level2:가요 please go, or let's go / level 3: 가세요 more polite form of please go). However this same 세 things play a little different role in exclamatory sentence or declarative sentence. 세요 versus 요 still boost politness level but only half way up I would say to 2.5 level?? instead of 3. (i.g) you are very pretty --> (level 1: 너 참 이쁘구나 or 너 참 이쁘다. / level 2: 당신 참 이뻐요 / level 2.5: 당신 참 이쁘세요 / level 3: 당신은 참 이쁘십니다 or 당신은 정말로 아름다우십니다.) please understand my explanation may be incomplete from the Korean gramatic point of view because I'm writing things down on top of my head. NEXT, in-depth study. Actually I would like to add one more politeness level on top of everything. you may call it level 4 or extremely polite form. these type of sentences often can be found in historical drama about Chosun dynasty of 500 hundred years ago etc. For example ~~ 하시옵소서 is a form of "please do ~~" but way more polite than level 3. Imaging a man who's telling his King or Queen to do something. that's what he would put at the end of his sentence, or he could put himself in real trouble back then haha. Lastly 존댓말 system is not just about what comes at the end of each sentence. it also includes selection of words to use, or particular expression to carefuly choose. (i.g.) eat your meal --> level 1: 밥먹어 / level 2 밥 드세요 / level 3 진지 드세요 or 식사 하세요 / level 4 진지 드시옵소서 (for King etc) 진지 is polite word for 밥, or 식사. is only used for your elderly person in certain circumstances. (another example of word selection is 너 and 당신, you never use 너 in 존댓말, ) To be on the safe side, i would suggest 식사하세요 for level 3 expression. Hope this helps.Going further, by studying this 존댓말 system, people may be able to understand more about Korean culture and have insight into historic background etc, how this unique system develops in Korean language. what are the benefits and bad side of having 존댓말 etc. Have a good day. ^

you can use 반말 to strangers only when you wanna fight with them and adults usually using 반말 to children who are under 20(to high school student) because they are not adult legally.

In german, we have politeness where we have two different words for "you". We have "du" (informal) and "sie" (formal). Du: With friends, children, people who are younger than you, people who are the same age Sie: Someone who is older than you, someone who has a higher social status than you, strangers But we don't have it as extreme as in Korea. We also have different ways of saying hello depending on how old the person is whom you are adressing.

Well, I really like the way you share your thoughts and things you learned for others. It is really good. but i wanted to ask that why you can't go to Korea?

+Jamie Liang hey there my advice for the next step would be a combination of both everyday vocab. (household things, animals, colors, and stuff) and phrases. meaning that you would get vocab but you would also know how to use those words, that if you are adventurous. if not just go for flshcards, you can buy them with books, or just make your own as you learn them for, exp. write the numbers and colors and the translation on the back. try not to learn to many words at the same time. make yourself a foundation. learn 5 to 10 words each day and try to use them as often as posible. then maybe you can learn the phrases to go with those words you learn. for example with colors this is xxx color, and repeat and try to use them as i said. repetition makes perfect xD. and you keep adding, i have a big box of flashcards. that i constantly keep on adding, when i get to a new words i make a new card and try to use them. and separate them in a pile that i know very well and those new ones. but you have to also fit grammar and things like conjugation in between. but if you can read (cause u know your hangeul well) you can recognize the words in tv shows dramas and songs. so read them to get how to write them, repeat to get the pronounciation, and at the end of the day make a quiz to test them. if you recognize them and can say them. put them in the other pile of cards. and everyday add new ones. but keep testing the old ones. Languages are a cumulative thing. you keep adding. but i make of importance to learn some phrases so you can interchange your new learn vocab and actually use the words.

CodeMixr Honestly, Ali haven’t seen that happening too often unless the older person is making a joke but then takes it back. I would assume though that people who do not feel comfortable around another person wouldn’t speak casually to them. So it could be a way for people to establish that they are not ‘close’.

Thank you! You can use 반말 with your friends for sure because you have a close relationship and you can drop the honorifics. Same goes for your partner (boyfriend/girlfriend), however, you wrote "someone you are in love with" and that may not necessarily mean that you have a close relationship or you have established one, so watch out for that. Hope that helped :)

I am just starting learn Korean, so I don't understand what they say in Korean dramas but I recognize the final of the verbs so if they say "eyo" or "imnida". I noticed that often when they are talking informally sometimes they say some phrase with "imnida" and when they are speaking formally (imnida) they say some phrase with "eyo". Is there some standard phrase that requires "imnida" even if we are talking informally? Or just I understood wrong what they said? Thank you if u can reply
