Are these firm billed hours? Because that is rough as hell. My budget’s 30 billable hours a week, but avg working hours is 45-50 hrs with 40 billed. (I’m in australia, biglaw)

Big law is unfortunately not a 9-5, but in turn, lawyers will retire stacked with millions many years before the average person would even consider retiring and probably without financial stability at that.

How do you think firms generally view associates that choose a reduced hours schedule (lets say reduced hours by 20-25%) ? I know it depends on the circumstance, but do partners view them as lesser, not committed to the firm, or have less chance of making partner, etc.?

totally depends on the firm and the group. my two firms had wildly different views of reduced hours

generally, associates need to hit an annual billable amount to get their bonus. my old firm was 1950 billable hours for the year (and this is about normal for other firms)

does realization rate play a role in law firm billing? I'm on a similar billable hourly requirement at an accounting firm but if you spend say 10 hours on something that only ends up getting billed for 5 hours, the extra 5 hours spend hurts the realization rate
@CeceXie

depends on the firm. some firms penalize partners who write off billed time, which effectively hurts the realization rate, while others are more liberal with allowing those write-offs
