This live performance is from their 1989 Australia concert, which is awesome!! The song Massachusetts is their take on the Flower Power period back in the 60s when people were running off to San Fran, but what did they leave behind? The song says they left their woman and/or family back in Mass and need to go home. The Brothers were born on the Isle of Mann, which is an island between England and Ireland, then they moved to Manchester, England, then they moved to Australia and landed there on Barry's 12th birthday, 09/01/1958, the twins Mo and Robin were 8 y/o (to be 9 on 12/22/1958), and baby Andy was just 6 m/o. They started singing as very young boys, like 5 and 8, in Manchester when their mother discovered them singing perfect 3 part harmony, thought it was the radio! They moved back to England in 1967 and the rest is history!! This song was written in 1967!! Now it's a classic!! Check out their 5+ decade catalog, can't go wrong!! How about YOU WIN AGAIN from 1987 (Princess Diana's favorite song), MR. NATURAL from 1974 kzread.info/dash/bejne/iKOoxpOok5iYiKw.html, HAPPY EVER AFTER 1991 kzread.info/dash/bejne/X4uDvMisc66vgaQ.html, PAYING THE PRICE OF LOVE 1993 kzread.info/dash/bejne/hXWE2aRvmbLWpaQ.html, and ANYTHING from the STILL WATERS ALBUM 1997!!! ENJOY!!!

Watching from Boston, Massachusetts! Robin Gibb has a very unique style to his voice, and brings an unexpected depth to anything he sings. My husband and I saw Barry Gibb, on his own, singing the hits of his career, an paying tribute to his dead brothers. It was a very touching night.

A live performance in 1989 of a song that was originally a hit for them in 1968.This song was from The British Invasion phase of their career, years before the disco phase. The Bee Gees had at least 4 different separate and distinct career phases. All of them were great and produced great music.

This song was written during the "Summer of Love" in 1967 and tells the tale of someone leaving Massachusetts for San Francisco, but returning back and finding out everyone had left. They had never been to Massachusetts and the song was written in New York City. Very early Bee Gees hit. Many of their live performances of their older songs were actually better than the studio versions. Amazing. See the 1997 live version of "Words" and the 1989 live version of "To Love Somebody".

They had never been to Massachusetts when they wrote this. They wanted a name in the US and they thought Massachusetts sounded nice. It was an anti-flower power song from the 60's apparently. That's what I read. Suggestion: "Nights on Broadway"

Massachusetts was written in the 1960's. It was always lead by Robin and was their first global number 1 - except in the USA! All three Bee Gees were born on the, Isle of Man, between Ireland and the British Mainland. Their family moved to Manchester, England for work and it was here at the ages of 6 and 9 all three sang in harmony on stage for the first time (Robin & Maurice are twins). A younger brother was born in Manchester when R & M were nearly 9. The family moved to Australia for 8 years where the BG's became known on Australian TV as child enterainers and songwriters. They moved back to the UK and London to join up with the same recording company as The Beatles. They had a different manager though. They only went to America permanently in the 1970's.

I don't believe they had ever been to Massachusetts when they wrote this. At time it was written, the hippy scene in San Francisco was a thing. On a side note: Fact - They could write a song almost at the drop of a hat. And, I don't know if it's true or not but... I have heard that someone challenged them to write a song with the word Massachusetts in it. And...they went back to the studio or wherever and wrote this hit. As I said, the challenge part is a rumor I have heard.
