Dear my future self,
This week we visited the pet memorial tree in Central Park which is in a hidden location with the Rambles. It's only there between Thanksgiving (Nov) and Three Kings Day (Jan) - there's a "Keeper of the Tree" that takes everything down and puts them back up every year. We went on a Saturday morning since I had the week off for New Year's and there were 10-12 people there at any given time, mostly tourists. I took Copper there and he kept getting distracted by the squirrels as I was trying to look at the pictures.
At some point when our time ends together he'll have a photo at this tree too. Until then, we're going to make this a yearly tradition to visit at the end of the year.
As I get older my perspective on grief has also changed - in some ways it's a beautiful thing since it is all the unexpressed love that pet owners didn't get to express. It's a collective and singular experience that they all share, which makes this very precious.
