You should think about including seed oats with your grass seed. The oats germinate rapidly, and robustly, provide cover for the grasses, help control erosion, provide food for wildlife and are annual.

Those gullies in NC were what prompted Hugh Hammond Bennett to write “Soil Erosion: A National Menace”, and eventually get the Soil Conservation Service authorized about 1930 (renamed NRCS now) and also the Soil and Water Conservation Society started. Interesting story about all that. Natural resources conservation was my career until I retired last January. Hope you soon get a good stand of grass established on that bare ground. Nice that the timber is funding (most) of this transformation. It’ll be nice to have the additional pasture.

When we moved into our 3/4 acre we found nothing but clay. we had to rototiller the garden bed and haul in bags of dirt. I mixed the soil and added horse manure to just get a garden started. we composted for a year in a compost heap and then started another compost heap. this year we used our own compost. Wow what a difference. a shovel and a hoe and a rake is what I used because of how small we are. But all was worth it. So far this year we have had radishes and strawberries already and onions are coming up and the squash is really coming up. I planted a pomegranit tree and my son planted a lemon tree. We are doing everything by hand. Oh I forgot the birds brought us some Sunflowers.

we did the same thing on our farm in West Virginia back on the 70's I was 5 or 6 at the time. My grand father had large sections done with a dozer not a track loader like you are doing. we did loose a lot of top soil that is still pilled up at the edge of the fields today. if you can afford to hydroseed that would be a good way to quickly help with the erosion issues and get the seed done quickly.

Open end ratchet wrenches. NO MOVING PARTS Individual wrenches, 4 piece set and 7 piece set. YOU MUST CHECK IT OUT ....While I was an aircraft mechanic in the USAF, I made one to do a special job. Some time later, I saw that they were made by a tool company. Coincidence? Hmmmm. ....I made mine from a conventional combination wrench. Everything filling up the gully us being recycled! The small amount of topsoil going in the gully will help break down the roots and debris into some incredible fertile soil!!! Great job Josh, don't stress over the money, it's all gonna work out great with your master plan brother!!! Love Ya!

You need to explain you plan on creating topsoil, by pasturing the land. It is clear to me you want to improve your ground. Pasture can use and improve poor ground if done right. My mother was from a farm in Maine. It pastured lots of rocky ground and hayed the better areas. Reclaiming ground from woods or logged over areas is expensive and hard. This project may take years to complete. Once grass is planted, it will grow. A solid thick sod takes more time. It takes care to see grass beats weeds and trash plants ( unwanted trees and bushes).

You know I'm a quilter. No fun having people who don't own a sewing machine, don't know anything about different fabrics, never heard the words "cut on the bias" don't know about the different weights of thread to use, etc, but they sure enjoy telling me what I'm doing wrong.

The soil, good or bad, contains the bugs (micro-organisms) that will seed everything to make the decomposition and settling go a lot faster. For the part you are leaving consider getting/renting a bunch of goats to clear out most of the munchies stuff.

Keep wondering what you have planned for the section higher up on the hill. It’s obviously been forested but covered in shrubs and brush. Is that something for the fall or do you have other plans?

Stoney Ridge Farmer so someday harvest the trees and plant new ones. Till then the cows get some shade. That’s one solution that can work.

Nerve racking until that seed is up and green. After you roll hay out next winter that's going to blow up. Your going to need more cows.
