Webley 1913 Semiauto Pistol: Shooting

Following up on yesterday's history and disassembly of the Webley 1913, today I am taking one of them out to the range. Courtesy of Mike Carrick from Arms Heritage magazine, I am shooting original WWI British .455 SL ammunition. We don't have a lot of it to work with here, but we will try out some magazine fire as well as some single loading, since the magazine cutoff was one of the relatively unique features of the 1913 Webley.
Overall, from this admittedly limited firing experience, I think the Webley is a rather underrated pistol, probably because of its short service live and unavailable ammunition. Despite its awkward appearance, it handles and points pretty well, and has felt recoil not unlike the Colt 1911, despite having a more powerful cartridge.

I possessed two of these pistols in the 1980's. I am writing to explain my ammo experimentation. First, I found out that the .455 Colt Eley will single load, chamber, fire and eject without a problem. This is one use for the magazine cutoff. The rim diameters are close to each other. The .455 Colt Eley fired a 265 gr. bullet at around 650 fps. Second, I was able to load the magazine with 175 gr. .45 ACP match ammo which would feed, chamber, fire and eject. The .45 ACP match ammo had enough power to operate the pistol yet not hurt any parts. The extractor would hold the case against the breech face allowing the firing pin to strike the primer. .45ACP bullets run about .452" in diameter while .455 Webley Auto ammunition ran about .456" in diameter. Accuracy suffered. I also custom loaded this round at that time. I had to remake a lead bullet mould and machine .45 Colt revolver brass. Lastly, I test fired one of these pistols with the recoil spring removed. It fired and ejected without any signs of pressure problems; the recoil spring stop pin held in the slide stopped against the frame without any mushrooming of the pin nor the frame. In the past I would test fire certain locked breech pistols without recoil springs installed. A good pistol design should be able to single fire cartridges without the recoil spring and sustain no damage. My only complaint of this pistol is directed at the soft steel used in construction. If these were made today, one could supply a variety of recoil springs for various loadings and of course use 4140 type steel for the frame and slide.

My Grand father had a pair of these British Pistols, he traded If I remember right, a US .30 Cal Carbine and several bottles of " Apple Brandy, he made, Distilled, and I think a small amount of cash, I fired the pistols many times when I was a youngster, he carried one of them in a Brown Leather British Army Holster when ever we went hunting, fishing, or just out picking up pecans, that was in the early 1970s in East Texas, I saw him shoot several Feral Hogs with his British Automatic, it knocked them down for sure easily, he bought several wooden boxes, crates, of Ammo for them I remember he kept the Ammo in a pantry type storage Cabinet, He also had a pair of Webley Revolvers, from WW1 , and 3 Martini Henry Rifles Single Shot they had the old socket bayonets with them, these old rifles had been converted to British .303 Cal in the early 1900s These are the rifles he Deer Hunted with for 30 or 40 years, when he passed away he left my Dad all his Guns and ammo, I always liked those British Auto Pistols, they never gave my Grand dad or us any problems, fast forward 40 years and now I own all of those Guns, Yep and I still shoot those old British Auto pistols to this day. Great Pistols.

I do so envy you, I absolutely love shooting vintage firearms. I always had a policy, back when I was a gun dealer/collector; I would never have a gun in my collection, or for sale that I had not taken to the range for some testing and playing. Well there was one exception, a fellow sold me an old muzzle loading flintlock that he had tried to build from a kit many years ago. I undid all his mistakes, polished up the barrel and action to a high polish, then took it to our next bluing session, where I ran her through the tanks. I stripped the gunk he had put on the stock and put a high sheen oil finish on her, replaced the home built rubber (from a tube of make a gasket he told me) with a brass butt-plate and finished the brass trigger guard that still had casting marks on it, down to a military brass sheen then finished it with spray lacquer When she was finished she was, in deed a beauty of a flintlock, but I had not black powder or ball and didn't see any sense in buying it to fire that one, although I have since regretting not doing so. The fellow who sold it to me came to my table at the next gun show and paid me 3X what I had given him for the basket case, he was so happy he nearly cried, I think he would have had his native American blood stopped him from such actions.

I just watched the earlier video before this. I strongly suspected that it would be a pleasure to shoot due to the size of the slide and its mass. I was impressed by two or three of the design elements. The simplicity of disassembly. The fact there is no loose parts that are small when you Field strip it. The ballistics of the round look good. I would love to see this reproduced with better modern materials and chambered in a 45 ACP. I would definitely buy one. I also appreciate the fact that it is top ejecting.

Insert a 'trained' somewhere in there and the statement is correct. You solve the difficulty by training your left handers to shoot right. Its what various militaries have done for centuries (consider the problem of the occasional firer using the left shoulder in the serried ranks of the 'Thin Red Line'). And not just militaries - my dad uses his 'off' right hand to write because thats how he was forced to do it in school.

At the 0:27 second mark we see an example of degraded ammunition. The hammer falls, rebounds then falls back and only then does the round discharge. That is some scary old ammunition you need to pull the bullets on, dump the powder, discharge the primers them reload with new primers and powder to make it safe.

Wow filmed on my birthday many moons ago, whilst I was still making my winter quarters in Topock AZ! I might be a bit strange on this point, however I have always loved the look of that particular pistol, now I know that I would have loved to have had one in my collection as well, back when I had the money to buy and trade firearms. Ah for the good old days. A couple of firearms I wished I had in my collection would include this fine weapon and the Swedish Lahti, the Former STOP, and the Browning High Power. I did have a S&W Model 59 for some time and I guess that was close to a High Power but still not the same. Oh and I still kick myself for turning down a trade for one of the original Automag pistols in .44 Automag with magazines, loading dies and two boxes of ammo. At the time I thought, what the hell would I do with something like that, not a great duty gun. Could have had it for $300 bucks as the guy was desperate to sell yet I sat on the sideline and drooled but failed to move. Wish I had my Luger back to, as well as several other fine firearms I had from time to time. And my Dan Wesson Pistol Pack in .357 Mag with 3 barrels, in the DW case. Ah well now all I have is Dad's .22 and my old duty gun as well as the mandatory M1911A1, God knows I will be buried with that gun.

I think this is another example of the guys buying the equipment not actually having to use it, or even speaking to someone who does. With a rifle at normal rifle ranges, you at least have time to single load a round with the magazine cutoff on, but with a handgun with a cutoff at normal handgun ranges, even a guy with a stick has an advantage on you if you miss with the first round.

I had a 1917 & '18 Colt M1911. The '17 in exceptional condition. I have a '13 Webley Mk. I. .455 Auto.. I sold the two Colts years ago and still own the Webley. I won't list my preferences, but I must mention one biggie, the Webley was/is more accurate, grouped much tighter. I was very disappointed with how much the Colts "shot around".

Worth mentioning (Courtesy of TFB) that the Webley's were the first automatics where the chamber acts as the locking lugs, so in its day really cool.

I've noticed how much you've mentioned how easy it is to trip the grip safety on this and maybe one or two other featured guns and I had an observation/opinion on grip safeties in general. I know it's an important thing to have a pistol grip safety that is easy to trip by gripping the pistol, but I've yet to meet the pistol with a grip safety that I had trouble doing that with. I've handled a fair few different types of pistols with grip safeties and never had a problem tripping it with a normal firing grip. I see all of the 'modern' 1911 variants with fancy grip safeties that do an excellent job of protecting your hand from the hammer and provide more surface area to soften the recoil, and most of those have a built up bump to 'make it easier to actuate the grip safety'. I've never seen much point to those bumps, as I have no trouble with 'old fashioned' grip safeties (other than a few with slightly sharp corners in a few spots that pinch under recoil). I've never been able to find a way to grip a 1911 in a reasonable firing grip and not actuate the grip safety. The only way I've been able to fail to trip the grip safety is to hold the pistol so loosely that it would fall out of my hand if I managed to fire it and probably sustain some kind of nasty hand injury.

This is one of those guns that looked small in the catalogs (A lot of Gun's Digest growing up) without something to scale them to in the picture. Something about the proportions, and shape just looks like a compact, until you see it in someone's hand. Maybe because it's a .45, and the large grip safety makes the receiver, and barrel look smaller by comparison? (With other listings in the Gun Values catalog)

A small number of 1911 Colt's were made for the RAF in this Caliber, unless it was a later model Webley Semiautomatic issued to them in world war two. Have seen these marked RAF .455 Webley.

I only just noticed you're left handed. it would be really nice for our southpaw brethren if you could include lefty information on future videos. I have almost no experience with older firearms, however, many of the new ones are not conducive to left handed shooting. in my experience, the palm of my hand presses the mag release, thus jamming the gun after the first shot. this sort of information would be helpful to left handers interested in purchasing antique firearms. I hope you see this. please upvote if you're a lefty
