in this video we look at the effect of running with and without the airbag lid and filter on a pair of 44idf Weber's fitted to a ford pinto

These straight comparisons are very interesting 👍

Very Interesting...Thanks, generally one would expect things to choke up due to the 'restriction" but to no avail. 👍

we once had an adjustable intake trumpt work loose and suck itself against the cars inner wing, we only lost a couple of bhp on an engine making over 200 bhp, so it just goes to show you dont need acres of space infront of he intakes

Interesting. It looks like the power gains at lower rpm is due to filter box intake pipe resonance.

Very reasonable supposition. Curious, 32/36 or 38/38 vs a single side draft 45 DCOE? Would you be willing to crunch those numbers?

Very interesting, I wonder how fuel consumption was affected? The power suggests you have not hurt airflow but you now have smaller main jets... containing the stand off has to be a good thing?

i would imagine fuel consumption woud improve. It can be containing standoff, but sometines its a case of refective waves giving a stronger signal to the mains, you dont see it very often these days but it used to be fairly common to see a "pulse" plate fitted to carbs, a pulse plate was nothing more complicated than a flat plate spaced about an inch or so away from ram pipes

@@PenguinMotors thank you for the added info, and for the efforts you make with all of these tests. Strangely regarding the pulses I remember an eccentric Scotsman with a Vauxhall Ventora with triple Weber 40DCOEs, standard cam and a home modified head. Stupidly quick at SantaPod he used plenums between the carbs and head. (So each whole carb served 2 cylinders of the 3.3 6 pot.). I realise each cylinder was probably a bit much for the carbs (from Holbay Hillman Hunter) but weirdly interesting. No need for you to replicate the experiment but it was an interesting project. He got a better time than a Ventora with a 350 small block... On a lighter note when he busted a diff his mate towed him back to Scotland..with a Metro

Corresponds with what I have seen. The higher the peak hp point the more the "hurt" But below 6000 rpm it typically looks close to that.

where can I buy an airbox like this?

dont know its an origonal ford group one air box so really rare, you just have to keep a look out on auction sites, but they change hands for lot of money

engine spec, distributor, cam compression, what fuel do you use etc etc?

@@PenguinMotors to be honest its a mess, I need to get it to someone that knows what they are doing. Sierra 1.6 with my old Mk2 Mexico cam which is stamped '270', 32/36 carb, super unleaded, electronic ignition. It went to the MOT garage running perfectly but they messed around with it to get the emissions down and now its awful, next to no power, and detonating for England. I have no idea what the compression is

last time i tried as set it was on a rolling road with a 170bhp Alfa Romeo they cost it about 5bhp
