WebDAV Server. How to configure remote access for Windows & MacOS on a QNAP NAS

The license should appear in your account within 48 hours. WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning), is a set of extensions to the HTTP(S) protocol that allows a web server to appear as a standard network drive. With WebDAV support, the QNAP NAS user will be able to access the shared folders via HTTP/HTTPS protocol remotely.
WebDAV clients are native to Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, etc. You can simply mount the network drives (web folders) from one of these operating systems to one or several shared folders on the NAS.

    Thank you for the amazing explanation! I've completed all the steps with success but I'm having a very persistent and boring extra step that I have to do each time I boot my PC and try to open a file that is inside the folders, for example, open a pdf file. Each time I boot the system or try to open a pdf file, the system requests my credentials that are saved, but I have to press ok every time I want to access the folders or the pdf file. Can you help me with this problem?

    @@QNAPUK I've tried your method but unfortunately it didn't work. It keeps asking for the credentials. It's very annoying to have to press ok or insert the User and Password every time I want to open a pdf file or some Microsoft office documents. If you have another solution, please let me know.

    Hi ! Thanks for the great videos, indeed much clearer than official doc. One question : what would be the recommended way to make a complete duplicate of a NAS to a remote location ? I have an old Mac Pro I have converted into a 12TO RAID in a remote location (800km from home...) for backup, and would like to use it to sync every now and then and be up to date with the NAS that I use on a daily basis at home. So the backups would ideally be incremential / based on file modifications, so as not to take forever each time. Would that be possible to setup ?

  • @QNAPUK

    @QNAPUK

    Sure, you could perhaps create a backup/sync to your Mac Pro, but you would have to run something on the Mac Pro to make it available to our HBS3 application. We have options for destinations that include Remote RSync Servers, FTP Servers and WebDAV Servers... if you could run something like that on your Mac Pro then we would be able to use it to store Backups/Syncs.

    @@QNAPUK Great news ! But I'm a total noob concerning this, could you consider making a step-by-step tutorial on how to setup this, covering the (static?) IP, RSync, FTP, etc... ? I have no idea where to start and what to do for RSync, I looked it up it implied Terminal command lines and I just gave up not wanting to destroy my computer lol. I already use HBS3 for cloud storage (but for much smaller volumes because the prices are too important for over 10Tb) with a SFTP online storage provider. But I'd really like to setup my own direct copy on this distant Mac Pro... please help 🙂

    It all goes as per the video until mapping in explorer, even credentials are asked and properly entered, the returns the error message "The folder that you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another". Sharing settings are in place for the admin, and the folder does exist. I have tried with other shared folders, same result. Maybe an important setting is missed in the video.

    Thanks Craig! I followed your tutorial step by step, but when I try to connect to my NAS from my Mac throught "Connect to Server" I keep on getting the following message: "There was a problem connecting to the server. This file server will not allow any additional users to log on. Try to connect again later". What am I doing wrong? Is there something I need to change on my QNAP or on my router? I don't have any issues when I connect to my QNAP on my LAN. Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

    Quite often the most common problem is that you're using a HTTPS port that you set in WebDAV settings but only use HTTP in the URL, or vice versa. Are you 100% sure the link you are using to connect is correct with the activated port for WebDAV?

    I used the exact same link on MacOS and Window 10. HTTPS works on MacOS but not on Window 10. The error is "Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Error 0x80070043". - HTTP works, not HTTPS. I have let's encrypt installed.

    Please note that certificates only work when accessing the domain you have the certificate for... so if the certificate is for test.myqnapcloud.com but you are trying to access it with the IP address instead, the certificate will not be used.
