do you need Veeam Backup and Replication running on a server as well
You need to show how all this works in a real world situation -- NO virtual machine stuff!
How do you search for a folder or file???
I wanted to post this as this stumped myself and some others. There is another video by Craig, the same QNAP UK guy that explains this process better however here was the main sticking point for me: 1. You must use the UEFI bios setting and 2. the Virtual TPM 2.0 setting must be enabled. Also, if you boot into the UEFI shell and are stuck, here is the command to launch the BIOS runtime. From the BIOS Shell type: FS0: \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI and then press any key on your keyboard to start the boot process. Also, the newer video is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lIN9lpiIhcKxqrQ.html
I know this is digging up an old thread, but what would happen to the existing configured IP address in the below scenario. Existing single NIC with IP configured and used for management plus share access. Trunking enabled adding a second unused NIC plus the existing configured NIC to new LACP trunk. Is the IP configuration retained or does the new trunked interface revert to a default or DHCP derived IP configuration?
When I go to my nas via local IP adres I end up on a similar but different login site, than I use a hostname. When I ping to hostname I receive the same local IP address. So, they are exchangeable. One site has brighter background then second. And on site entered by IP - I can't login :/ Any explanation?
So, can these Thunderbolt equipped models be used as a tradtional DAS with no network connectivity? Or MUST they be connected via network connection (via USB-C). My use case is I want a pure DAS with RAID support. My Mac will handle network sharing. Is this possible?
Que bom que dessa para ligar num PC Ubuntu
I press the reset for 3 seconds and it doesn't beep. What should I do?
In watching your video again I am struck by hearing you say "USB adapter" but also saying that you are connecting the NAS directly via internet cable... Are you using an internet to USB adapter to connect RJ45 from NAS to USB port on you Mac? If so, will all of this tutorial be equally valid if one simply plugs RJ45 directly in the ethernet port of the Mac? Thanks.
Thank you for this helpful tutorial. I would like to address a sort of similar network issue. How to run the NAS on my network (router attached) but use the Linux OS within the NAS to set up a firewall that blocks all internet access to and from the NAS but lets the NAS play properly on it LAN. Do you have any tips? Thank you.
Hi. This was very helpful. How do you update an existing container such as PiHole to the latest image using Container Station 3.0? Thank you!
Hello, I just ordered the QNAP TVS-h874X-i9-64G NAS. I’m in need of advice. I’m going to install 3 20tb drives and 2 nvme that are 1tb. My original thought was to use the nvme drives as a pool of the apps to live on like Plex. Should I do that, or use the nvme as cash?
Great video!
Thanks for the visit
thanks, but, which is the procedure if in the meanwhile I would change the disk too (to use a bigger one) but to keep previous settings and folders contents of older NAS ? Thanks
So which cable do I use to connect directly? A Ethernet cable or usb cable?
Ethernet, network port on your computer to network port on the NAS.
@@QNAPUK I didn't even realize I needed a switch until after I started setting up, but I just hooked this QNAP up to the router and it appears to be working. I guess that's a future investment.
This is exactly what I've been looking for for so long, but unfortunately something isn't working for me! I'm getting a "There was a problem connecting to the server" error on Mac - would love some help with this! As far as I can tell, I've followed all of your steps - what could be the issue?
Quite often the most common problem is that you're using a HTTPS port that you set in WebDAV settings but only use HTTP in the URL, or vice versa. Are you 100% sure the link you are using to connect is correct with the activated port for WebDAV?
@@QNAPUK No idea what is different - but today I tried again and all seems to be working. Maybe needed time to register the SSL cert? Anyway - thanks for the great vid!
Other than avoiding the necessity of having an available PCI slot, is there an advantage to this solution over connecting to a Thunderbolt card directly? How would you recommend making a choice between this approach vs. a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt connection? Thanks!
One of the biggest disadvantages of Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt is cable length, generally you will be limited to be sitting within 2-3 metres of the NAS for this. This Sonnettech device really takes away that limitation without sacrificing performance.
I learned a lot, thank you very much! In addition, it would be better if you could tell me how to create a shortcut for the AppCenter software on the qnap nas desktop.
Hit the 3 lines at the top left of your NAS UI, it will bring out a menu with all the apps, including the App Center. Drag it to the desktop to the right and place it where you want. It will still be in the main menu as well as now having a shortcut on the desktop.
how to connect with a open ssh certifcate?
Can you play locally stored videos and output over the HDMI interface of the PCIe GPU?
Yes, install our HybridDesk Station (HDStation), this is what will control what is on the HDMI output. You can install video players there. You will also need to make sure that your PCIe GPU is set to the mode of "QTS Mode" in the settings for it.
If a PCIe GPU is installed in the 873, along with better plex transcoding, does it allow for direct viewing of videos over the HDMI interface, or is the HDMI interface only used for administration?

Great video! I have to migrate two RAID-0 disks from TS-251+ into a new TS-453E. (Disks are OK, the TS-251+ failed due to excessive heat - climate change). Is there some written or video resource on my task/problem that I can look up?
Here are all the notes regarding our NAS Migration: Please note: The destination NAS should contain enough drive bays to accommodate the hard drives from the source NAS. It is recommended that the source NAS and destination NAS are both using the most-recent version of operating system. Check the drive bay sizes of both the source NAS and destination NAS and ensure that your hard drives are compatible with the destination NAS. Check drives compatibility list. You must disable SSD caching on the source NAS before migrating to the destination NAS. If the source NAS has connected JBOD/expansion units, you should check that the destination NAS is compatible with these units before migrating. After system migration, the following may occur: Storage settings (including Qtier and SSD caching) may be changed. Network and virtual switch settings (including Port Trunking, Virtual Switch, Thunderbolt, and USB QuickAccess) may be changed. If the destination NAS has less RAM than the source NAS, some features and applications may not be supported (including Virtualization Station, Qsirch, and Snapshots). If you're migrating to a target NAS that is incomparable in its functions to the source NAS, restrictions apply and the migration may not work. These restrictions are, including but not limited to, as follows: Hard disk drives configured as a storage pool on the source NAS can not be migrated to a target NAS that does not support storage pools. QNAP recommends checking the transferability status of your licenses on QNAP License Manager before data migration. Not all licenses are transferable. QNAP recommends deactivating transferable licenses on the source NAS before data migration. Non-transferable licenses can not work on destination NAS after data migration. Due to incompatibilities in file system, system migration between QTS and QuTS hero operating system is not supported. If you still have legacy volumes in QTS 4.3.4 or later, we recommend that you backup all data on the legacy volumes, create one or more new volumes, and then restore the data to the new volumes. This will enable you to fully utilize all features of Storage and Snapshots. A legacy volume is a volume created before QTS 4.0. Existing volumes become legacy volumes after upgrading QTS from an early version to version 4.0 or later. Legacy volumes can still be used for data storage, but their behavior and status will not be consistent with other volume types. They also cannot benefit from the latest QTS features such as snapshots.
Hi, great video and explanation !!! I will build my new QNAP TVS-H474 with 4x 20TB ironwolf (in JBOD mode, looking at 1 failover spare disk) + 1TB WD Red for cache + 64gb RAM + Nvidia GTX1650, in QuTS Hero. By this explanation, could be sense change 1 20TB ironwolf to 4TB SSD in an exclusive pool to application? Separeting in 2 volumes, and losing some space to storage or spare disk to gain a plus to application running, or I am going to any place no sense. Basically the application functions should be media server, plex server and something else around audio/video. Thank you so much !
The most important thing with QuTS hero is to make sure you have at least 2 x SSD's to be used as a system volume, ideally in RAID1. This system volume can be used for apps as well as the OS. You can then use the HDD's for your data, also additional SSD's can be installed as well for things like an SSD cache if you need it.
@@QNAPUK Thank you... When you says 2 SSDs to be used as system volume, are you refering to 2x NVMe on board slots, right? So, I though the these slots were to "cache use" only. But after you said additional SSDs as cache, for which slot do you reffereing fo this? Could you let me know some youtube tutorial videos about this?
@@QNAPUKAlso, if you referring to 2x NVMe slots, is it possible (using 2x 1TB in raid 1) setup it as system volume + cache and work together for these two functions?? Can I do this using QTier also?
Could you describe brief differences between TBS-h574TX and TVS-h874T, and please give preferences user between those, thanks.
TBS-h574TX is a much smaller unit, SSD only, great if you need to take it to shooting locations or anywhere else as it's so small. The TVS-h874T is a much larger unit, can take a mix of SSD's and HDD's, much better to be installed at a fixed location like your studio. Both are aimed toward content creators looking to do things like video editing with multiple editors.
Hi, what the best ram memory model you recommend to TVS-H474? I think to 2x32gb or 2x64gb
TVS-h474 supports a maximum of 64GB in the form of 2 x 32GB modules.
i have a prob. with credential on qnap for veam job.I tried changing but could not success
Just found this video while looking for an alternative to our current Backup solution. Looks promising. We already use several QNAP NAS, but I'm not able to test it at the moment. All Machines combined we have about 35TB of Backup Data. We would Like to have an offsite Backup one our Cloud Server. Is that possible with that app? Especially regarding just uploading the changed data. Our current solution uses incremental Backups but still saves everything in one file, which would mean that after every Backup the File is "changed" and synced completely new. Which means 35TB Upload every day.
Netback PC Agent is about getting data from the client computer into the NAS. If you need something to get data from the NAS into an off-site location like a Cloud Server then I would probably recommend using our HBS3 (Hybrid Backup Sync) application to do that. It does support full backups/syncs as well as incremental.
For ~6000mb/s and ~4000mbs/s from 25gbe in TVS-h874T you need SSD's hard drives or you are capable of getting that from for example EXOS hard drives?
HDD's do have a limitation... the best SATA EXOS X24 speeds on their data sheet is 285MB/s under ideal conditions/data. Multiplying 285 by the 8 drive bays will only give a little over 2,000MB/s... with real world random data and a redundant RAID setup, probably half that. So SSD's would be needed to achieve anything faster.
Yay my TVS-h847T core i9 64GB has been featured in this video! you didn't mention it comes with gen4 lanes! it should have come with 10Gbe ports too however (Im in the UK and NOT a creator not a small studio user lol) - I hope my TVS-h1688X is featured in the 12 bay +4 video 🙂
I have a WIFI 7 router with a 10 GbE port. (Two, but one is the WAN). A QNap switch with two 10GbE ports, a QNap NAS with a QNap PCIe card with two 10GbE ports. How do I set up the PCIe card to get 10 GbE from the switch, and use the second 10 GbE port to connect my Mac Studio to the NAS and get a connection to the router for access to the whole network and Internet? The NAS also has SSD acceleration enabled. Thanks!
You would have to create a Virtual Switch in our Network and Virtual Switch application, there is a wizard for doing a Bridged network, you would want to combine both 10GbE on the QNAP NAS into this.
Is it possible to use 8 HDDs X24 24TB exos enterprise from seagate with (TVS 874T i9 64GB RAM) NAS to achieve a total of 168 TB in RAID 5? Because in the official website it was mentioned that the maximum storage is 154TB with 22TB RAID 5!
Yes, the 24TB Exos X24 (ST24000NM002H) has now been added to our compatibility list for the TVS-h874T so you would be able to install 8 in there. Space available will be confirmed by the NAS, but after doing the decimal (advertised size) to binary (actual usable by NAS) conversion, you would have around 150-152TB available in RAID5. For context, the 22TB drive would give around 138-140TB usable in a RAID5. 24TB (decimal) = 21.82TB (binary) 22TB (decimal) = 20TB (binary)
Just got a Qnap tvs-h874 installed. How to run an ffmpeg transcode cluster type functionality for batch transcoding. Setup a watch folder for automated transcode jobs.
Plex can automate that with it's optimised versions function, it will watch a folder and then offline transcode it to whatever you need.
@@QNAPUK Can the Cayin MediaSign Player serve a similar purpose?
Yes, you would configure that in Multimedia Console under the Transcoding->Settings area. When a folder is set as a background transcoding folder, all files in the folder will be transcoded automatically. When a new file is added to the folder, it will be scanned and added as a background transcoding task. You can select the scanning schedule and output format for transcoded files. CAYIN does the work, Multimedia Console does the monitoring of what will be transcoded.
@@QNAPUK awesome, thanks.
There is the TS-x73A family ❤
Problem: After restart, the issue is still present. FIX IS ATTACHED >> EDIT: After QNAP restart, the transcoder does not work correctly. There are some other settings missing for it to work. I don’t know why, but Plex does not function correctly with this setup. After every restart, I have to manually set the following to make it work 100% because Plex does not see the GPU in the settings, so hardware acceleration is disabled automatically after a QNAP reboot. Plex is a mess! TranscoderUseHardware=“1” TranscoderUseHardwareDecoding=“1” HardwareAcceleratedCodecs=“1” HardwareDevicePath=”/dev/dri/renderD128” HardwareAcceleratedTranscodeGpu=“1” TranscoderH264BackgroundPreset=“veryslow” TranscoderThrottleBuffer=“60” TranscoderQuality=“1” EDIT 2: I found the problem! If you delete the HardwareDevicePath and restart the NAS, you can select a GPU in the Plex transcoder settings. Then an ID is selected, and you can see it in the XML. But you will get the same problem as before: after restarting the NAS, you will lose transcoding again! A workaround is to restart the Plex server again! It looks like the Plex server starts too quickly, and the GPU drivers are not present, so Plex does not select and activate transcoding. Plex or QNAP has to fix this. This is a bug! A delay in starting the Plex server APP will fix this bug! U can use QNAP autorun.sh and run this code : #!/bin/sh ( # Stop the Plex Media Server sudo /share/CE_CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/plex.sh stop # Disable Plex Media Server App /sbin/setcfg PlexMediaServer Enable FALSE -f /etc/config/qpkg.conf # Wait 5 minutes sleep 300 # Enable Plex Media Server App /sbin/setcfg PlexMediaServer Enable TRUE -f /etc/config/qpkg.conf # Start the Plex Media Server sudo /share/CE_CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/plex.sh start ) & Qnap does initialize the gpu drive also really late. I just see after 5 minute when all has bee loaded, on my system the gpu will be initialized. So thats why plex think there is no gpu there on start! The GPU is also not visible in qnap sys info till the driver is loaded. So go for 5 minute or more !
I have problems with port 11172 and 11173
Unless you've recently changed the SKU, the TS-464 is expandable to 16GB of RAM. Mine is running 2x8GB sticks now.
Originally we launched TS-464-4G, this had 1 x 4GB module and 2 x RAM slots internally, the maximum RAM on this unit is 16GB. Later we transitioned to TS-464-8G, offering double the RAM. Depending on time of manufacture the TS-464-8G may have onboard RAM, it may have 2 x RAM slots with 1 x 8GB module, but we are quoting that it is officially non-upgradable. If you happen to get one with 2 x RAM slots it is up to the you if you want to try to upgrade it, but it will not officially be supported by our Helpdesk and they may ask that it be reinstated to the original 8GB whilst we are troubleshooting any issues you may tell us about.
@@QNAPUK While I completely understand the potential, reset the unit back to 8GB because thats what QNAP supports - WHY is that the threshold when per Intel the N5105 supports 2 channels, 1 dimm per channel at up to 16GB for a system max of 32GB? I have been running 32GB in my TS-464 8G unit for over a year now, and it has been flawless.
It is up to you if you want to do that... mainly on the 8GB included unit we do not want to say you can upgrade the RAM as it would upset someone if they bought it and it was a version with embedded RAM with no slots to upgrade. If you are lucky to get RAM slots and willing to take the risk... it is up to you if you upgrade beyond what we advise, but you may be asked to revert back to the original 8GB by our Helpdesk if you need their assistance.
I confirm 464 can run 32GB ram and run right now more than a year without any issues
Is the USB4 2x25Gbe will be compatible with THB4 as well? Would be a great option for MACs 😊Thanks!
Most Mac's with the Apple Silicon are USB4 already so will be able to use them.
@@QNAPUK Great!
Pricing pls.
What do you need pricing for?
Thank you! Nice to see the breath of (qiote) broad basis that QNAP (still & in the near future) covers! A few questions; Question 1: I suppose the "QNAP NAS Lineup : Enterprise / SMB" (one of the first slides you shown in this video) is not sorted in a particular order? (left to right) Other then model-nummers, thus numerical, not sorted on (more) powerful processors? (from least powerful on the left to most powerful on the right). To briefly explain what I'm referring to, the depicted TVS-h1688X has an Intel Xeon W-1250 (6-core/ 12- Thread processor, up to 4,7 GHz) on board, whilst the TS-h886x has an Intel Xeon D-1622 (4-core/ 8- Thread processor, up to 3,2 GHz) on board. Thus, "in my book", the TVS-h1688x is the more powerful NAS? Not it matters that much to me, we have several of both units in use and love them all to bits! (pun intended) Question 2: And my other question, although I suppose that will be answered once the web-pages/datasheets are up; I suppose the "limitation" of USB 4 only (for the new QNA adapters), will also be applicable for the new expansion units TL-D810TC4 and TL-R1210TC4-RP? In other words, no downwards compatibility with USB 3 for those new expansion units? Which I can fully understand, just asking to be sure. Thanks again, very much appreciated!
1. Not necessarily in an order, agree that the h1688X is more powerful than the h886 though. In this case the left to right order would be correct. 2. Yes, so far I understand the compatibility as either USB4 or Thunderbolt3 and Thunderbolt4. Things could change in the next few months leading up to release though.
Can i plug a usb 3.1 drive in to the NAS with videos on it and stream them across to my tv??
Yes, just make sure to add the "source" into whatever Media Server software you are using where the path of that source is the USB drive.
nice thanks i might try it soon thanks for the video love this content please keep it coming appreciated
Doubt: the LAN LED on my TS-873A's frontal panel is OFF when I use only the LAN port of an expansion card (the LAN LED on the frontal panel turns ON only when I'm using the embedded LAN ports). Is it a normal behavior? Or instead the LAN LED should be ON even when only expansion port is in use? Thanks in advance.
I believe the indicator light on the front panel is only for the built-in ports, the PCIe NIC's will usually have their own lights on the card itself.
I have a TS-664 which is a great product if you can ignore the noise. Must be 10 times noisier than my TS-451+
Nice video Craig, could you do a Minecraft server in Container Station next, my kids would love this :-)
Brother does the worst software for their printers. I have decently new printer, from 2015, however the newest software is from year 2005. Many things are not working properly due to bugs. Funny thing is that Brother is the least scammy company. Don't let me started on HP.
Thanks for the overview. I just wonder why the TVS-h474 is having such a high power consumtion. I take that this is the idle consumption (not sleep)?
I think the TS-473A should be on here
It is a really good NAS with a nice spec.
great overview. do you have a summary of the total capacity (based on raid levels) and drive compatibility chart?
464 😍
