This time, with Putin's Russia, America bit a bite too big and it could very well signal the end of the 100-year long reign of American Imperialism as described so brilliantly by Mr Kinzer.

In Grenada, the Rangers attack lasted 6 hours, since the tiny Island has no Army, no Navy or Air Force. The Ranges fought against 287 fearsome Police Officers (who were actually half of these, cuz the other half had not yet come to work the afternoon shift). The dead US Rangers were caused by a clash between Choppters, and the others died under "Friendly Fire"; they shot each other. Correct numbers: There were 34 policemen killed and many injured. The dead Cubans were military engineers and airport workers; they were not Cuban soldiers. Only military engineers and electricians. The airport was converted into "Casus Belli" cuz the Reagan Administration assured that it would be to install a Soviet Military Base, when the US has 23 Bases only in the Caribbean and almost 800 Military Bases scattered around the world. Another "Casus Belli" was that 120 medical students were hostages and prisoners within the facilities of their own University. Really? (NOT) Why weren't they evacuated BEFORE starting hostilities? That would have been very simple and without using Logistics. But not. They better put the lives of the students at risk. The tiny Island of Grenada is 4 times smaller than the Island of Puerto Rico. Its entire population fits into New York Yankee Stadium. They had barely 3 years of having won their Independence and passing, from being a Colony of the English Empire, to a Sovereign Nation. Did they really deserve the abuse of power from a foreign invasion?

The EU are participants in most all NATO war declarations---no aggression necessary---but we are stealing your oil using our bases to do it. It follows behind the U.S. provocations in Syria with as many as 10 bases. one an airport, overtly protecting the theft of oil they sell on the black market. Look at the Libya oil distribution and there are the vultures of the EU.

Chomksy writes about that question of Bush's actually just being an echo of Eisenhower's. It's declassified now, so we know that back in 1958 Eisenhower admitted the Cold War wasn't actually the Soviet Union. According to Chomsky; "The US at that time had three major crisis areas, according to the internal discussions, all in Islamic countries, all in oil-producers. One was Indonesia, one was Algeria, one was basically Iraq - the Iraqi region. Those were the three crises. It was made explicit in the internal meetings. In fact, Eisenhower, vociferously, according to the minutes, insisted on this: there was no Russian involvement. The enemy is indigenous nationalism. In fact, that’s true throughout the Cold War, but very explicit then, and Eisenhower did discuss it with his staff, said there is a campaign of hatred against us - not on the part of governments but on the part of the people, and we wanna know why that’s true. And he got some answers. John Foster Dulles, Secretary of State, said the problem is that the communist - “communist” just means anybody who’s a nationalist, and the CIA was telling them strongly that their main enemy wasn’t communist but it didn’t matter, “communist” just means the ones we don’t like - and they said the communists have an advantage over us, an unfair advantage. He said they can appeal to the masses of the population. That’s an appeal that we can’t counter. And the reason is they appeal to the poor and the poor have always wanted to plunder the rich." The problem, as Dulles presented it, was that the people were too democratic... they blamed the US for its imperialist invasions, for what was openly perceived as our direct involvement with setting up or overthrowing government, largely destabilizing countries or empowering puppet governments to exploit them for our oil interests, and Dulles said the civilians who were against the US were perfectly correct in this, but that this is how the US should be conducting itself, so it was nearly impossible to win civilian minds against their self-interests.

Continuing Chomsky's comments; "...there was a more serious and considered answer given by the National Security Council, the highest planning agency. They pointed out that there’s a perception in the Arab world that the United States supports status quo regimes which, of course, are brutal and oppressive, and does so in order to secure its own interests in obtaining oil, and then they said, well, it’s hard to counter this perception because it’s correct. They said it’s natural for the United States to link itself up with the status quo regimes and try to sustain them and to pursue its interest in obtaining oil. So the end result is that there’s a campaign of hatred against us among the people who we’re basically robbing and on whom we’re imposing harsh, brutal, repressive and corrupt regimes, and it’s pretty difficult to counter that campaign."

Kinzer's remarks, starting at about 15:40, absolutely describes what has/is happening to Venezuela and truly explains media complicity in this 'empathy' strategy. UGH!

On the Granada invasion the discussion left out the fact that Reagan had another reason for the US invasion of Granada because Granada had extended their airport to allow larger planes to land making it much easier for Cuba to fly troops and equipment to support the battle against the US-supported South African occupation of Namibia and against the South African troops who were fighting in Angola in support of the US-supported Unita group (remember, Reagan's government labeled the ANC and Nelson Mandela as terrorists).

An interesting comment, thank you. It does throw another light on the US invasion of Grenada, which I'm surprised Mr Kinzer either doesn't know or preferred not to mention. For the people of Grenada, of course, it makes no difference. Should perhaps point out, however, that Namibia did not at the time exist, but was called South-West Africa, under South Africa since I don't know when. As for UNITA, they won the election that took place before independence but the communist MPLA seized power with the crucial help of 70,000 Cuban troops with equipment, as well as East Germans and Russians.

@@pieteruys2032 The South African forces zoomed up through Angola and ended up no more than 100km from Luanda. The whole business, incl. the MPLA's seizing power with the help of Cuban forces, went almost unmentioned in the Western press.

Exactly it’s not just the government and multi national corporations. All of those institutions draw their people from the American people! Those institutions embody and reflect the values , attitudes and mores of the spectrum of world views of the nation. Unfortunately that spectrum skews heavily towards greed, domination and racism and ,as uncomfortable as it may sound, always has and at this point in history it seems to me, always will. No one would be talking about American slavery anymore if the American people ( particularly those who value be designated as white) had allowed African Americans to go about their lives in peace without lynchings, Jim Crow, redlining and police brutality. But “white” Americans couldn’t allow that because too many are too attached to absurd racist attitudes and too addicted to greed and gross materialism. MLK once said that he was afraid that he was helping African Americans to integrate into a burning house!

He didn't mention the interests of weapon's manufacturers in continually finding new markets for their weapons. I think that has a lot to do with the wars and interventions the United States gets involved in.

Very interesting remarks, but I'm not sure about the statement that the amercian people are very compassionate. It seems more like a people with a childish notion of good vs evil combined with belligerent tendencies. In America, the government and the media barely have to make effort to drag the public opinion into supporting wars (which always takes place somewhere else and do not imply direct deaths and destruction in the USA). At this point, there are multiple recent examples of the catastrophic results of US military interventions, nevertheless here we are, with the public opinion all into escalating the war between Ukraine and Russia.

The new country (the US - well all colonies) were a refuge for the dispensable desperate poor of the old continent. And also for ruthless people (some already wealthy some poor) who had more chances to make a fortune in the new system than in the old system with its well established pecking order. (And the resources in Europe had been depleted over millenials). No gold rush in Europe for instance, those finds had been made thousands of years earlier. So the US elites were maybe even more ruthless than the European elites. (The violence against the labour movement for instance in the US is worse - maybe because the US robber barons needed to be much harder to even get to the top - in Europe a person would have used inherited wealth - so they defended their profits by all means necessary (including illegal and brutal measures). The mindset aligns with the desire to rob the assets of other countries and restrict THEIR freedom - in favour of the the business interests of the US elites (not the US citzens in general).

That, besides the political imprisonment of Lula in April 2018 so that he, leading the polls, would not win the election a few months later thus "greenlighting" the aberration of Bolsonaro onto power.

Grenada was done to take attention away from the recent Lebanon failure and to bolster the popularity of the Reagan administration.

No, the U.S. screwed the pooch with Chen Kai Sheik keeping him isolated, only meeting him in Egypt not in Tehran with the so called big three. The U.S. sent phony 'Christian' agents like John Birch to China who're useless. FDR needed to join China in the war with Japan back in the thirties but was making too much money selling oil to Japan. The U.S. stopped selling oil to Japan only when it was to their advantage to enter formally into WWII.

No one bothered to consider asking something very simple; • What in God's name was the American Government doing facilitating a War Crime over in a Sovereign country that hadn't aggressed against or threatened the United States to begin with, without a Constitutional Declaration of War Authority?! • How is it that One goes to fight for our Constitution when they're sent off by an Incompetent Governing Elite (who bureaucratically wants Power) to fight Criminal, Immoral, Unconstitutional Wars for Oil, Wars of Aggression and Wars of Attrition?! • How is it that the American Government wants the rest of us to fight the Corporate War of Aggression, yet they have the unbridled audacity to Steal and abrogate our own Constitutional Rights within our own Borders?! • Where was Donald Trump, Dick Cheney, their loved ones and friends when it was time to lay it on the line for the Horror in Vietnam and the Vietnam Style War in Iraq?! Mossadegh angered British Empire Officials by nationalizing British Oil interests in the country. British officials turned to the CIA for assistance. In 1953, the CIA secretly fomented a violent Coup D'Etat in Iran, which succeeded in ousting Mossadegh from power, making the Shah of Iran the supreme unelected Dictator of the country. To fortify the Shah’s dictatorial hold on Power, the CIA helped organize and train the his Domestic Police Force, the Savak, essentially a combination of the CIA, NSA, and the Military. Part of the CIA’s training teaching Savak Agents the art of Torture. The next 26 years, the Iranian Citizenry suffered under one of the most brutal and tyrannical Dictatorships in the World, One that US Officials fully supported, called an ally and friend of the United States. In 1979, Iranians successfully revolted against the Shah and ousted him from Power. One result wasn't a restoration of the Democratic System that had elected Mossadegh, rather another brutal religious Dictatorship. The awful Relations between Iran and the United States Government that continues to exist. 2. In 1951, the Guatemalan Citizenry Democratically-Elected a Man named Jacobo Arbenz their President. Arbenz, wasn't satisfactory to the National-Security Branch, specifically the Pentagon and the CIA. The US Officials opposed Arbenz since he was a Socialist, and US Officials considered a Socialist President of Guatemala a threat to “National Security” of the United States. In 1954 - one year after the Coup D'Etat in Iran, the CIA fomented a violent Military Coup D'Etat that succeeded in removing Arbenz from Power and replaced him with the most brutal unelected Military Dictators in Latin American History, a Man named Carlos Castillo Armas. The CIA had a kill list prepared for the Coup, Arbenz was able to escape by fleeing the country before Castillo was to get him. The CIA’s destruction of Guatemala’s Democratic System threw the country into a 30-year Civil War that killed Guatemalan Poor People. 3. In 1960 a Man named Patrice Lamumba was elected Congo’s first Prime Minister after Independence from Belgium. Lamumba spoke out against Western Imperialism and refused to take sides in the Cold War, the CIA to conclude that he was a threat to “National Security.” The CIA orchestrated the Assassination of Lamumba on January 17, 1961, 3 days before President John F. Kennedy was sworn in, liked Lamumba and would've ordered the CIA to stand down. 4. In 1970 a Man named Salvador Allende received a plurality of votes in the Presidential Election in Chile. Pursuant to the Chilean Constitution, the Election was thrown into the National Congress. President Richard Nixon, his National-Security team, the Pentagon, and CIA concluded that because Allende believed in Communism and Socialism, he posed a grave threat to “National Security” to the United States. The CIA attempted to bribe Members of the Congress to vote against Allende. It orchestrated the kidnapping of the head of Chile’s Armed Forces, Gen. Rene Schneider, who opposed a US Military Coup D'Etat in his country especially since it violated the country’s Constitution. The kidnapping attempt on Schneider left him dead. The CIA then fomented a Coup D'Etat that took place on September 11th 1973 that violently ousted Allende from Power leaving him dead. Army Gen. Augusto Pinochet, one of the most brutal unelected Military Dictators in History took Power. Pinochet’s 17-year Reign of Military Terror came to an end in 1990, he and his CIA-supporters Incarcerated, Raped, Tortured, or killed 10,000's - whose only “Crime” was believing in Socialism - with the full support of Richard Nixon, and the “National Security” team. Of course, there are the more recent support of Wars of Attrition that ousted Democratically-Elected Presidents that the United States Government disapproved of, replaced by a brutal unelected Dictator. Cuba, Honduras, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria to name a few. When the word gets out that our blood soaked American Imperialism is nothing more than Militaristic boondoggles to serve the interests of the Deep State, the Military Industrial Complex, and Corporate America...Our $20 Trillion Dollar Debt cesspool and our Phony Monopoly Money isn't worth the paper it's printed on...If it ever gets out that the American Government cannot serve the needs of the American Citizenry since both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue is Corporate Occupied Territory, The Electorate will certainly grieve that they ever went along with these Crimes against Humanity, meanwhile Capitol Hill continues drowning in a sea of it's own Bull****! Stephen Kinzer is telling some historical truth. His point of view is clear, the interest and story line of the USA.

My problem with Steph Kinzer is the language he uses to describe the acts of agression of the US Rogue State throughout its history, calling them adventures and not acts of war and terror that violate the rule of law on a daily basis. Just getting out of a country you invaded for hegemonial and corporate interest and that are destroyed for decades to come shows just his lack of sentiment for the extent of Murican Imperial conduct

He does seem too light and giddy. This is not a fun field trip research paper. Operation Gladio (Reinhard Gehlen), Paperclip, Licio Gelli, PNAC, AIPAC, the Dulles brothers, Hearst & Luce, the 1944 Dem Convention where Henry Wallace was denied the VP slot for racist idiot errand boy Truman, the DLC, Reagan's war on labor and the Fairness Doctrine, the 1996 Telecommunications Act (5 corporations now own over 90% of all major media and the distribution systems), arming the mujahideen (Osama bin Laden), arming Saddam during the Iran - Iraq war while selling arms to Iran to arm the Contras, Honduras, Lula, Venezuela.. one would think he would be a bit more serious if he had a firm grasp on the long dark arc of US Imperialism and the forces behind it, still very much active in messing up the world and creating blowback for the next generation. IMHO, if we don't se a Sanders of Gabbard in the White House in 2021, it's either pitchforks or the end of the grand experiment in Democracy (or Republic if you prefer).

This is repeating itself 4 year later in Ukraine they have played another theatrical performance billions of dollars off the sympathies of the country and abandoned the Iraq and Afghanistan wars 20 years later. The Hyprocrisy of if all.

Note - the very same month - October '83 .... 241 Marines/Peacekeepers were killed in Beirut - an invasion was a very effective way for Reagan to alter the "news cycle" ... As for creating a "Jewel of the Caribbean" ... Let's not forget "America's Showcase in the Caribbean" ... (Puerto Rico), and how they have been treated.

I agree with the speaker Stephen Kinzer and his views. I feel USA cannot go around questioning as its own foreign policy adopted these type of policies like invading a small country that it is rescuing and its going to bring some changes and then leaves the country in a much worse like Afghanistan, Iraq so back then when it invaded it was for its own domination. If USA goes into dominating all the areas in the world or new areas then it will get a retaliatory effect as USA I feel in its current position is unable to convince the world about the new changes that it intends to bring about in the world or nor does it has that power to impose itself if it imposes then it would face with a retaliatory effect by the powers of that region. So if it goes for more practical approach that how much can it convince and what is its area of dominance. So I feel that in the current situation USA can its pick its region of influence but cannot dominate or influence all the regions of the world. Just like India has influence in South Asia, China has influence in East Asia similarly Russia has influence in the east Europe so every major power has its region of influence so its better to leave their regions of influence to them. Just like USA had a problem with Taliban in Afghanistan back then similarly Russia has a problem with neo nazis so even Russia's concerns should be taken on par with the concerns that US has with Afghanistan. Another point by suppressing the major power of a region and then try make a neighboring country which is considerably small a major power then the existing major power would retaliate to that policy. So I feel a foreign policy which knows its regions of influence and other countries regions of influence then only one can reduce the conflict.

Now at this moment in time America are trying to medling with Indonesian Politics because in the year 2024 is Election year

How can this man say that the US does terrible things around the world when we intervene in other countries affairs. Then turn around and say that the American people have always been so sympathetic to any kind of suffering. The American people are supposed to be running this country aren't they? Actually, Jose Tierra, it is both ways. We are a compassionate people BUT we get lied to and don't know what is true. [TG for Democracy Now and others] We have high ideals and can't believe our leaders would do the horrendous things they have done and continue to do. Example: US citizens are guaranteed freedom to speak and learn but February 2022 Homeland Security decreed (not passed a law through Congress, but decreed) that anyone disagreeing with administrative policy (whatever the president says) can be considered as advocating overthrow and therefore traitorous or terrorist. Appalling! Not many people here know about this or know what to do about it and so we, compassionate people, live in denial: we can't believe our govmt spies on us, we can't believe it, thru news, lies to us and keeps us from learning an opposite side to any conflict, like Russian point of view about Ukraine, etc. We are paralyzed by our disbelief and, as violent as our foreign policy is, we don't really like war. Imho, Jose.

The United States have been involved in Ukraine for years now, preparing and orchestrating 2014 Maidan Coup d'etat ("we spent 5 billions $ on this - Victoria Nuland of 'f..k the EU' fame).

Everything he says is true but especially the part at 13:10 Our foreign policy does not change over time as the world changes. We ignore Africa. We hate China and Russia. We love the EU, NATO and Israel and we exploit South America. I'm simplifying ofc but the problem is that because it's been this way for so long, you can't even find politicians who could shape new foreign policy and relations. It's a bipartisan worldview that's outdated, blood-soaked and hypocritical in many ways. It also has seeped into the citizens minds so now the govt' doesn't even have to worry about ppl voting for a "radical" politician with a different world view. You get yelled out of left and right wing comment sections online for even mentioning this stuff. That's what bothers me most about the US. There really is no true change here and everyone just plugs their ears when you try to mention solutions. edit: 15:55 is EXACTLY what's happening in Iran right now. But it's also happening with Ukraine and the press. I've never seen so much sleek cleansing for a country to corrupt for NATO, the EU and has White Nationalists militants who wear literally Nazi stuff(where would you even find that? And they know the history and wear it anyway"). The press spent month after month selling the poor Ukrainian story to the American ppl and now NO ONE questions anything they do, from using old folks as shields in a nursing home(the UN did an official report on this so no it's nots Putins propaganda) to using Truck bombs and car bombs to kill innocents. I'm just sad that modern Americans are still duped like this. But I guess social media/internet was never going to improve ppls knowledge since most ppl watch and reshare things from the mainstream media(and it trickles back into social media). This is NOT giving a pass to the bad things Russia or Iran has done. It's just pointing out the US seizes on any opportunities to disrupt those countries simply because "they're our enemy!". Because we've spent decades doing character assassination of these countries, the citizen are already conditioned. When Iran says the US and Israel are taking advantage of the protests to amplify them, they are right. When Putin says the US and NATO have been dishonest and antagonistic, he's also right. They are never peace talks or diplomatic visits. Just weapons' and lies. Same thing is continually happening with Taiwan and China and it's sad to see. We never mind our own business and we lie to our citizens to keep them from voting or protesting against the govts interests.
