Weatherproof 32A Single Phase Power Distro Build - Heavy Duty PDU for Outdoor Event Power

This is a project I've needed to do for a while now - especially with festival season upon us. It's my new heavy-duty weatherproof 32 amp power distribution unit that is used for temporary event power outdoors.
This video documents the build process, modifications and workarounds I made along the way on this project.
This unit takes a single 32A Ceeform input and breaks it out into 3x 16A Ceeform outputs. The distro also provides overall overload protection, output overload protection and features dual 16A 30mA RCBOs (RCD + MCB combined). The split RCBO outputs mean that in the event of an earth leakage fault only some power would trip off and experience outages.
This is ideal for my use in live sound at music festivals as I can run the stage power from one side of the distro and the front-of-house main PA system from the other.
That means in the event somebody on stage plugs something faulty in (phone charger, guitar amplifier etc..) it will take power out to the stage only and I can still play music out front uninterrupted.
The build is actually based on a factory-built Mennekes "Menn 459913" unit that I picked up on the cheap for just £20. This was originally made with just a double-pole 25A RCD and 16A input but provided a brilliant template for what I required from a distro.
The housing is designed to hold up to 4 MCB / DIN-Rail devices and the cable entry gland was generously sized making it easy to fit a Double-Pole 32A MCB / isolator with two RCBOs for the outgoing ways.
The incoming cable tail was upgraded to 3-core 6mm H07RN-F tough rubber flex and fitted with a 32A Cee-type plug.

    Thanks for the video. I have a question. I am buying a generator here in Poland to do street ministry. Live music, probably 2 large coffee makers ( about 2200w for both) plus PA equipment and other equipment. The generator I am looking at is 7.2kw nom. It has 1- 230v 32 amp outlet and 1- 230v 16amp. I want to make an extension cable (maybe 150ft roughly 46m) to move the noise away from the event. Would it be the same as you did here, or would the "run" (longer cable) cause an issue?

    I wanted to make something like this, but going from a 32amp 3phase socket. To 3 16amp single phase. And maybe a pass through socket for the 3 phase 32amp. I'm working in a location for the next few months where I have access to 3 phase or 13amp single, phase which isn't enough to run a 200amp welder. I can obviously use a generator but I'd prefer not to have to run the generator for 3 months. I was thinking I could run L1, L2, & L3 to each of the live on the 3 16amp sockets and the neutral and ground between the 3 of them with a couple terminal blocks of some sort. I'd appreciate any feedback as I'm not an electrician.

    I know this is meant for temporary only, but out of curiosity, can a SPD fitted into this power distro?

    I mean, I guess you could but I'm not sure I'd necessarily do so. Also considering that SPDs are usually 2 modules and this enclosure is only 4 modules overall you'd have to loose a device or two somewhere to make space. Hope this helps. Thanks, Nathan.

    Nice video! Question, can I still use the 16A socket if I'm only going to use the 32A mcb?

    Whenever you step down from a higher amperage to a lower one, and smaller cables too, it must be protected by an overcurrent device like a fuse or circuit breaker / MCB. You cannot just go from 32s to 16s without protecting them from being overloaded and possibly melting and causing a fire. Hope this helps somewhat. --Nathan

    I think you could have done without the 32A main fuse because the outlet you are plugging your 32A pdu in to is already fused at 32A. With this configuration you could end up with 2 tripped 32A breakers (in your pdu and the breaker for the outlet you plugged your pdu in to) because tripping of the first can lead to tripping of the second because there is no selectivity between the breakers. You would have been better of with a 3rd RCBO so that you can supply 3 independent protected supplies where the one for on-stage equipment could have been a 6A which will be more than enough.

    Thanks for your feedback. The 32A MCB on this unit is double-pole, meaning it also acts as a DP disconnect / isolator. I personally don't trust the socket upstream to be protected as it should be, or the protective device to operate correctly so generally like an overall overload protection device on my side in addition to RCD protection on my side. Not that I've ever overloaded a circuit as I work out the consumption and distribute my devices between circuits appropriately. The only tripping I've ever really encounter is RCD tripping due to earth leakage issues with other peoples connected devices. Hence the split outputs on this unit. I wouldn't dream of fusing a stage supply down to 6A which will inevitably end up as 13A socket outlets. That'd just impose restrictions and limitations to the system which wouldn't make any sense. Not to mention if a smoke machine or something was in use on stage. Plus most of my distribution is done by 16A in/out RCD protected distro boards with double 13A metal clad sockets. I've been meaning to make a video on this stuff in more detail but finding the spare time when the gear is out at an event is rare. Hope this clears things up! --Nathan
