Wearing Hijab in the Military | NBC Left Field

Meet Capt. Maysaa Ouza, the first Air Force JAG Corps officer allowed to wear a hijab while in uniform. The daughter of Lebanese immigrants, Ouza was first told she could only request a religious accommodation to wear her hijab after formally commissioning. But Ouza challenged this decision and petitioned the Air Force to reconsider its policy. She was awarded an early religious accommodation and the Air Force allowed her last year to wear her hijab during commissioned officer training, as well as in her role as chief of legal assistance at Scott Air Force Base.

To say that a women is oppressed when she covers her body is to say that all of her power is in her physical appearance (sexuality). The hijab forces one to get to know us through our personality and intellect instead of how we look. Islam teaches us that our beauty is beyond our skin and that women have just as much or more rights to knowledge according to the Quran. Too many people in the west place a womans value in how she looks that is why you feel threatened by such a form of feminism. I am an American Muslim and hijab is my choice

@Dorian Grey I was a military wife and know exactly what it's like to sacrifice for the unit, but that doesn't mean that you have to give up your religion to be a part of a unit or give up your personal beliefs. Freedom of religion is one of the tenants that the military fights to protect. The only reason we're even talking about this is that it's not Christianity, and other faiths have visually noticeable aspects like hijabs.

@Mister Z When we use the word ignorance we have to attach it with another word that indicates ignorance of what ? Meaning Ignorance of Christianity or Islam or the rules of the baseball game. If you do, it doesn't mean that you're a bad person. But as a Muslim when you judge a Non-Muslim of ignorance of Islam , that sounds right, but in a Muslim person's mind he means 'No respect and degradation of the Non-Muslim person. That is wrong. Just like when you call a Non-Muslim a 'KAFFER or NON-BELIEVER' & by growing in a Muslim country I know what that means . It Means he is a pig, a Zendeeq, you do not ow him your same rights, and he is not equal in any way with a Muslim, even if he is Much better educated . So IGNORANCE is not bad , no body knows everything in life. The problem is , who thinks he is better then the whole world for a belief he has been brainwashed with since early childhood , without having the right to ask questions about it. THIS IS THE CORE OF IGNORANCE WHEN YOU HAVE NO FREEDOM CHOICE, THINKING AND CRITICISM. and that is the truth.

@Sky Daddy Loves Me Your claims are pretentious. 1. Islam is the FIRST religion to prohibit arbitrary sexual intercourse among non married men and women. 2. The quran explicitly states that a man beating a woman up will be punished SEVERELY in the hereafter. However, if a woman irritates a man, the length of the stick a man may beat her up with is SMALLER THAN HIS THUMB. 3. Before Islam existed, In Arabia, men (non-muslims: Jews, Christians) would bury their daughters alive. When Islam came it was prohibited. 4 . Taeadud Alzawajat: A man can have up to four wives if he is FINANCIALLY wealthy. “But if you feel you many not be able to deal justly between them, then marry only one.” (Holy Qur’an, 4:4). 5. Most of your false religious claims is actually practised culturally: such as, the religious police you just mentioned. This is only in saudi Arabia. 6. A man cannot have intercourse with is wives, UNLESS HIS WIVES ALLOW HIM TO. A man is prohibited to have intercourse with his slaves.

I am an American veteran.. I served in the USMC, USMCR, US ARMY, and ARMY NATIONAL GUARD.. I'm a Marine in heart & soul.. I salute you for your service and your courage to serve.. Rifleman, Aircraft Firefighter & Rescueman, Combat Engineer, and (Blackhawk) Helicopter Repairman are the MOS's that I held.. Being a female in the military can be hard enough.. Being a female in the Marines can be much harder.. Now add being a Muslim female to that equation.. As a NCO, I watched these ladies (Women Marines) serve w/pride, respect, honor, and love of country.. My only regret is NOT telling them how much I respected them and how much I loved them.. That goes for both the men and women.. I was severely hard on them.. Because I wanted them to be the best. Because I wanted them to be well above average.. During my time, a comment taken out of text could end your career.. Maybe that's why I NEVER told these strong women just how proud I was.. I'm glad to hear and appreciate your story.. SALUTE!

Al-hamdulilahi Rabbil Alamin. Sister, you are an inspiration and we all support you. Let no one hold you back, go as far as your mind and your heart will take you. Soon I would like to read that you have become a general insha'allah. Take whatever comes and give your best. I believe Allah will reward and bless you.
