Wearing an Australian Slouch Hat | Australian Reenacting
G'day team,
Here is a video going over how to properly wear an Australian slouch hat when reenacting the Second World War. As I said if there is anything I got wrong or anything I missed feel free to let me know in the comments and I'll be sure to take a look!

My instructor in Kapooka in the 70's trained us, 4 fingers high over left ear, 2 fingers above left eye, 1 finger over right eye. Congrats and love your work.

Thanks mate really appreciate it! I'm sure that this has relatively remained the same since then (maybe some small changes) as this is exactly what I was told in the cadets.
great video mate! another big difference between the WW2 diggers compared to our current soldiers is that, the WW1/WW2 soldiers weren't afraid to use their slouch hats. What I mean is that, yes, they did respect for them, (I have even heard that Australian soldiers turned down $20 from American soldiers for their iconic slouch hats), however, they didn't mind wearing them through the mud and the rain. Nowadays, soldiers don't wear them in conditions where they can get dusty and dirty etc. That's just something I have noticed over the years, although I may be wrong. Basically what I'm saying is, reenactors out there, treat your slouch hat like your boots, look after them, respect them, but don't be shy to get them dirty, because the blokes in WW1 and WW2 weren't. P.S. love the new intro, love the song too haha

Thanks mate and you’ve hit the nail on the head there
Nice info ..my dad also issued the Aussie slouchhat in Dutch east Indies KNIL .from 1945 till 1948...he was very proud on it ..he lost it in the 50' in Holland
cass here, high quality video mate. :D
Probably what made reenactors follow such tropes usually comes from the original Gallipoli film

Yeah pretty much
Beautiful and stylish hat
I always thought the ww2 brims looked wider than modern ones and it seems to be indeed the case
Where would you recommend getting a slouch hat from? I got a wool felt one but when ever I wear it it’s like being in a pressure cooker.

the most I know are in Australia, such as Lawrance Ordnance or Warwicks down in victoria. Internationally I wouldn't have a clue but depending on the era you are going for I would definitely recommend the two previously mentioned stores.

Howdy! I got an old slouch hat from part of my family thats Korean war era. But it long lost its puggaree. Is there a way to hand make a puggaree of that era? Or would you suggest a online bought one?
@AIFReenacter

I would suggest buying one online as making the puggarees are difficult however if you are daring to do so you can make your own

I'm not too sure about European stores unfortunately, Hopefully you will be able to find something soon!
Love this vid! I'm wanting to get me an Akubra slouch hat. Quick question, is it kosher from an Australian perspective, for an American to wear one of these, minus badges, as a fashion piece or just doing outside work, hiking etc.?

No not at all, many Australians use them here for that reason, just as long it’s treated with respect
