Weaponised Empathy: The Greatest Tool in Conflict Management

The greatest weapon we have to defuse, de-escalate or delay conflict is empathy. But not just regular empathy... weaponised empathy! In this video I talk through the ways we can proactively use empathy to achieve more desirable outcomes in managing conflict and potential aggression.

Great explanation of using verbal skills to preventing a potential altercation. I liked the story of the elderly Aboriginal woman. Cheers from Ottawa.

Thanks Victor! That lady's passing comment has shaped so much of my approach to self-defense since then. I wonder if she even remembers the conversation.

Great talk! Thanks! I guess I want to throw it out there that I believe the greatest way to reduce overall violence in any community is to reduce poverty, and we can't make effective choices to reduce poverty if we do not understand those is in poverty, and we cannot understand those living in poverty without empathy. There's always going to be a few predators out there that we can't change, but so much violence is the result of a very difficult life, and we can change that.

Yep, nice one Joe., it's a soft skill, but it doesn't mean that you're soft. Very important for good human interaction .

Interesting and not often talked about in the martial arts world, thankyou for sharing and inspiring us all to train hard and smart, I often think 'this person's just having a bad day, don't wake it worse'

Thanks Clive. Absolutely. As Rich Dimitri would say - most people are just good guys having bad days. A little bit a grace goes a long way.

Love your take on Empathy. I can't remember how many times been ripped off because of it but still I'd rather not lose ability to Empathize. Now my new understanding of Empathy is the ability to understand fully the other's point of view without having to go there for myself

Just recently found your podcasts and love the content and how you talk and explain things (and the guests you interview). I too have come to a path and realised how important communications especially listening and understating emotions are in de-escalating. If you haven't already read these books I think you will find them useful and interesting regarding this video. Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It - Chris Voss. And this goldmine of information on listening; How to be Heard: Secrets for Powerful Speaking and Listening - Julian Treasure. Keep up the good work and keep on sharing what you know. Thanks.

Thank you for the kind words. I’m a big fan of Chris Voss’ work but I’ve just added the other book to my reading list. Appreciate the recommendation!
