Here is a look at our first round of 2024 racing pigeons! I make notes on the physical traits of each young racing pigeon for reference when the birds are mature. Performing an initial grading of each young bird also helps me decide which races to send each one to.

Looking good, good luck this year. I like to keep some notes on my birds as well. A lot of people should be journaling their birds more frequently. Helps a lot for the further of understanding one’s bird.

James, besides pedigree, what other factors should we consider when grading a pigeon, like they do on auction sites? What are the most critical factors in quality control? I'm working on creating an Excel file to track all the birds I have.

That is great to hear! Ultimately, the only thing that proves a bird's worth is performance; either as a breeder or racer or both. But, when I'm grading my YBs before I send them out I'm mostly looking to weed out the weak ones. I like to see birds with good balance, strength (in the wing), and overall health. I like to see tight, closed vent bones but not all my birds have that, and that's OK. Hope that helps
What software do u use for record keeping?

I use two. I use a Google Sheets to track all the young birds that I breed each year. For managing breeders and pedigrees I use PigeonDB. I’ll do a video on that soon.
