‘We were that close’: Woman describes near miss with bridge collapse
CNN’s Danny Freeman has new details about the two people who survived the Baltimore bridge collapse and an Uber driver who narrowly missed being caught up in the tragic event. #CNN #News

The most incredible thing to me is that the guy who fell 185 feet somehow managed to not slam into, or get slammed by, a part of the bridge.

That's because he didn't fall 185 feet straight down unimpeded. He rode a massive object into the water. That object didn't free fall, either. Some parts swung down, more than they fell.

Inside were two of the trapped victims: 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, from Mexico, and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, from Guatemala. Four others were still missing and presumed dead. Two of the victims were Mexican nationals, two were from Guatemala, one was from El Salvador and one was from Honduras. All were employed by Brawner Builders.

This is gonna be tricky I think, because a lot of those marine heavy lift cranes if you look at them are for lifting things up from underwater, and they straddle the load because it's usually underwater. Lifting heavy, from one side, in the water is much harder to do because it causes the crane boat to flip. They need a crane/oil derrick that can sink to the bottom for more support.

Reminded me of Final Destination 5. Scary
I cannot understand how cruise liners and in this case, this massive cargo ship loaded with 10,000, 200ft long containers are allowed to maneuver into and out of the port without the help of tugboats??? How come no thoughts about this from journalism and people managing the Baltimore ports.
@laprimanerda7333
Ай бұрын
That port and many others have specialist pilots who drive boats in and out of the harbor. The problem here doesn’t appear to be that particular local pilot, it’s that the ship lost power, possibly twice, at a critical steering moment. From what has been released from the investigation, they called out for tugboat help once steering was compromised but it all happened in a few minutes time.
Imagine someone changing their shift just for yourself to ultimately fill in for their death, final destination vibes, id be pissed as a ghost
Is so sad to know that there is more coverage and praise about the ones that survived and yes they are blessed to have survived, but the ones that are dead that had families that they were providing for in their countries that will not have that support anymore, my question is if there is anything that will be done for those families ? Do these ships have a back up system to use in case of a power loss???
@HallimarRathlornStudios
Ай бұрын
As far as I know about ships, the answer to that is a *sort of* yes. They have backup power for smaller systems, like communications, lights, reduced steering, etc - but if the cathedral engines that power the propellers go out, there's not usually backup engines to keep them turning.

@@goobernoodles Yeah, that's true, too. I'm just a hobbyist who takes a lot of interest in ships, so don't quote me, of course, but my guess as to what happened her was that the ship's engines failed somehow, and because there was a converging channel to the starboard side, the ship started to veer to the right and wasn't able to course-correct. Given how small the margin of error that was allowed by the bridge for passing ships, just a few degrees of uncontrolled turn would have been more than enough.

when you give mash your foot to floor in a semi they used to call it rolling coal. that diesel is giving you everything it can and the diesel fuel it can't burn turns to black soot. some of us guys dig it.

This is caused by 'wet stacking'. Look it up for more information. Essentially there is more fuel injected into the engine than it can reasonably burn under the given circumstance. Someone pinned the throttle in an attempt to provide reverse thrust.
Amazing! The will to live sometimes defies our imaginations. Happy for the two who survive and saddened about those who perished leaving behind so many broken hearts 💔 The family that lost 2/3😔

The will to live of the survivor who ended up in the water must have been very strong indeed. He does not know how to swim but he managed to surface and get himself to shore despite enduring darkness, cold water and river currents. Must have done that on pure adrenaline.
any news about what caused the ship to lose control ?
Why the USA don't get one of the world's largest ship cranes equipped to lift the broken pieces of the bridge rather than the tedious task of cutting it into pieces. This job would have been completed days ago. The USA could use Heavy duty Lifting Vessels like the HLV Svanen(8700 tonnes, the SSCV Thialf Dutch Vessel with a lifting capacity of 14,200 metric tons, or the Chinese Zhen Hua 30 with a lifting capacity of 7,700 metric tons. There are cranes that can fit the scope of this job and complete the job in a short time.
PRAYERS TO THE FAMILY. THIS IS SO SAD.
So sad. They were trying to get away.
I'm going to say that those workers witnessed that ship malfunction from above when try saw the smoke.It's what us humans do, we're enquiring...they probably ran to the edge of the bridge for a closer look. When they saw the ship heading towards the support pillar, they never would've anticipated the entire bridge would be taken out. Awe turned to horror ..and in a few seconds they were gone.

I heard a lot were on their breaks in their cars so they probably didn’t even notice anything.

@@HabballSephThey were in their trucks, I'm sure they had no clue what was about to happen.
My worry is that, once the goods have been moved through other ports, they won't return to Baltimore. And that will hurt the port.
THEY PROBABLY WERE SITTING IN THE TRUCK ON THEIR BREAK JUST CHILLING AND TALKING AND THEN DAM THE SHIP HIT THE BRIDGE...MAY THEY REST IN PEACE...THIS IS SCARY AND CRAZY...I NEVER LIKE DRIVING OVER BRIDGE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU CAN SEE BELOW YOU AND THERE IS NOTHING BUT WATER...I'M SURE THIS MAKE ALOT OF FOLKS THINK MORE ABOUT CROSSING BRIDGES...SAD!

Especially crossing the really high and windy ones.
Not part of their construction team??? Guy who hung around?
I want to donate money to help the survivors and their families. I would like to know if there is a gofundme for them
This bridge had zero lateral supports

The bridge lacked collision protection

Nothing was going to stop that cargo carrier
Incorrect. We know exactly what led to this tragedy because, on the one hand, the pillars had absolutely no protection whatsoever against collisions with larger ships and, on the other hand, that the Dali had been reporting electrical problems and power losses for days because there were probably too many freezer units on board with inadequate fuses and electricity capacity operation. The first represents a breach of the duty of precaution while the other can be described as a simple greed for profit.
Was that an angel in the disguise of a policeman who told that guy to get off the bridge?
