We were all wrong about the Godox AD B2 and Flashpoint evolv twin head AD200 and Evolv 200

One AD200 in AD-B2 mount: f/8 +.2
Two AD200 in AD-B2 mount w/ 2 bulbs: f/11 +.2
The Godox AD-B2 is a mount designed to merge the power from two AD200 pocket strobes and combined it to deliver 400 w/s in a bowens mount.
Description from Adorama:
Turn your eVOLV200 R2 Pocket Flash into the next level of intelligent strobe life!
Flashpoint introduces the eVOLV Twin that joins two eVOLV’s to create a 400ws head with brilliant LED modelling.
The double header is more than just a power hitter. All you have to do is plug the original flashtubes from your two eVOLV’s into the Twin. Simply remove the modular heads from the eVOLV’s and slip lock the eVOLV200 bodies into the channel on the Twin and twosomes your power pleasure.
The Twin bracket has a light stand receiver with a tilt lock that is ready to attach to any 5/8” stud or light support. You now have a standard Bowens S-type friendly bracket head for all your essential modifiers; reflectors, softboxes, Parapops or snoots, and an umbrella shaft channel. You don’t need two eVOLV’s to take advantage of the 2X 20w LED modeling feature. Just one body will power the lamp with one barebulb inserted.
But, with a duo headed eVOLV200, you can have a real blast!
The eVOLV200, with the heart of the world famous Streaklight 360 TTL and the soul of the ever popular XPLOR 600 TTL, is now compatible with R2 Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm and Olympus/Panasonic camera systems. The compact and efficient solution for travel, easy setup with the reliability of the Flashpoint R2 Wireless System. Never before has off camera lighting been so user friendly and masterful. It will change the way you harness your camera’s technology.
Now, twice as nice.
Combines 2 eVOLV’s into a single 400ws power champ
2 brilliant LED modeling lights straddle the barebulb flashtubes
Add your Bowens S-type modifiers directly to the Twin
The bracket is attaches to any 5/8” studded light stand or support
Accepts reflectors, softboxes, umbrella and more

Well done sir. It seems Godox had not yet built a high level of confidence in the market when this light came out nearly 5 years ago. Almost no one gave them the benefit of the doubt on the way this flash option would work. Your explanation of how it actually works is spot on and I suspect Godox place in the flash photography market is much more solid now.

I love almost everything about the Godox AD B2. Why didn’t they make a spring loaded handle??? It is impossible to turn it past a big softbox. I switched the spring loaded handle of an old Bowens T bracket I did not use anymore. And while I was at it I removed the two toothed washers on the inside so I can adjust the angle smoothly. Now the AD B2 is perfect!

Saw this video a bit late LOL, but the main reason they decided to not use the center pins may be the fact that if you already need 2 AD200 to be able to power a 360 bulb, but you already have the 2 AD200's 200w/s bulbs that came with them and deliver 400 w/s, why on earth will you buy an extra 360 w/s bulb. And after the video you made comparing the different f stops of different Godox flashes and monoblocks that demonstrated that the dual AD200 was a little more powerful than the AD400 by itself, then Godox did the correct move :-) If you properly demonstrated that 2 AD200's in an AD B2 were slightly more powerful than a single AD400 which if the AD360 bulb is actually the same 400w/s bulb, so the results would have been similar as putting the AD360 bulb on the AD B2, I personally do not mind that they disabled the option for the 360 bulb, it would just not make sense to buy an extra bulb from the 2 that you already own in order to get less power. :-)

i think it's a better design this way really. You don't "lose" anything (can still get double the power). You GAIN the center advantage with the bulb you are already using for the power source. No need to concern yourself with a different light bulb. I'm all for this change whatever the reason was.

Robert you were wrong that the output of the bulb is depending on the bulb design wattage (means they can only maximum output to the design wattage no matter how much power supply to the bulb.) the bulb can only draw the maximum current that the bulb designed for no matter how much current source we have. The bulb will blown only if higher voltage then the designed voltage of the bulb.

Hmm, thanks Peter, I'm no electrician! Like I said that was just speculation. Whatever it was, Adorama previously had it in their warnings on the product page NOT to put a 200 bulb in the previously designed 360 slot. Do you know why they would put that disclaimer if it isn't dangerous?

My 2 cents.... I use these every day, all day. Today I have two strobes mounted with one bulb in center position. Strobe in #1 slot powers one led and fires center bulb, while Strobe in #2 slot powers ( just ) the second led. So I have both leds lit even when shooting with one bulb. It is strange though, that the second strobe will beep after the first one fires. No matter what settings I set on the AD200pro, the leds will ALWAYS shut off after about 30 minutes. To get them back on without reaching out to the Strobe, I just fire the X2T and they come right back on. If the led will not come back on, the battery is depleted.

I wish both electrical contact strips of the AD-B2 electrical interface where rotated 180, facing the pins outwards, so that the AD200s could be slided/sloted in from the outside inwards. I like to mount (thin) PeakDesign capture system standard plates on the wide side of my AD200s (to be able to quickly snap them on/off from a quick release clamp on a mini-ballhead or my belt or backpack shoulder PeakDesign capture plate when I use the EC200 extension) and with those PeakDesign plates fitted (they need a tool to remove ...) I cannot put the AD200s in the AD-B2.

Thanks much for posting this update, Robert. My AD-B2 is still on the slow boat from China. This is somewhat of a disappointing turn of events. I envisioned using the AD-B2 + beauty dish with a single, center-mounted 360 bulb. Hopefully, two AD-200 bulbs (rather than one center mounted bulb) behind the BD's deflector will work. We'll see.

Hey Robert as far as power output would 2 evolves have better power than fp roverlight 600? our favorite store “Adorama” has the roverlight on sale. I just bought a second evolve with the twin head, I’m just a little disappointed the twin head didn’t come with instructions or even some type of bag to put the twin head in. Overall when both elvolves are in the twin, I believe it’s just as heavy as the Rl 600. Anyway this video was very helpful how to set up the evolves in the twin. Robert, I have my AD200 in a Glow Parapop 38 inch light modifier with both diffusion panels on. I seem to trip the overheat sensor as after 20-30 shots at 1/1 or 1/2 power it is no longer popping a flash. My recycle chirp still sounds, but no bulb popping off. What am I doing wrong? I've tried on a second AD200 and same results. I thought I could fire 50-60 shots consecutively (per the manual), but with the enclosed light modifier, I seem to be tripping the overheat sensor. Would the duo head eVOLV200 solve this issue? I really want to like this system, but I have had one issue after another. Thanks for the great work you do.

+Dan Vang hey dan. First things first, is this in below max sync speed or in HSS? In HSS the number of flashes is less. I'm assuming you are using the omnidirectional bulb in the glow. Do me a favor, next time it happens try switching it to the fresnel head and see if you get flashes. I have a friend who reports similar and if that's the case, I would deem the barebulb defective and request a replacement.

  • @danlovaj

Yes, its the bare bulb and yes at HSS. Then that helps explain it. I have thought of using the fresnel head to compare. I've had this happen across 3 bulbs. Hard to believe its the bulb then but I have 2 more I ordered to try. I just wish other KZreadrs who use this at HSS report that you can't rapid fire this unit. Still have to learn to work within its limitations then.

Hey Robert I'm sorry but maybe you can help answer me this or anyone else who sees this. I just received my Flashpoint Evolv 200 and the R2 t trigger for Fuifilm cameras. I updated the evolve to the current firmware to receive the fuji trigger but I can't get HSS to work. Now I do have an XT-1 the firmware is current. Ive tried everything I can think to get it to work in HSS but I can't get it to work. Any thoughts? TTL and 2nd curtain sync seems to be working ok ill have to test it more to be sure but I could really use some insight. Thanks in advance!

Make sure camera is not in rear curtain sync before trying hss. I ran into this before. I couldn't get my sony to hss, when it had before. Turns out i was in 2nd curtain. Changed it and it worked perfectly.

Hello :) I love your films and you are great. I have this system, but I have problem that the light bulb get destroyed very easily (maybe after just 2 timers, and it is always just one that get burned out). Why? I use 2 light bulbs. And I also wonder if I can use light bulb in the middle and use Bulb 360W? Ingunn

no the light in the center cannot use 360W bulb...That's the whole point of this video. Not sure why your bulbs are burned out. Did this happen more than once?

I have not had a single bulb "burn out" on me. The common thing I hear is that people kill their bulbs by tightening down the modifier clamp on the bulb directly (with no modifier attached)

Yup, recycle times will not match at equivalent power levels though, so best to put sound on the ad200 since it's slower, if you need an audible cue.

Thanks for the review, would you tell me if AD200 x 2 w/ AD-B2 & using a silver umbrella as a reflector, is it capable of doing the job of an AD600 with a silver umbrella to over-power the sun in the afternoon? If I use the former one, is it going to have both AD200 in full power while AD600 just use maybe half power on that? I'm struggling which one I should get for my portrait/fashion shootings with HSS. Thanks in advance. =]

+Kenji Liu honestly I can't really say that because the distance, circumstances you work in, backgrounds all may not apply to my experience. But, the AD-b2 at 1/1 is slightly more powerful than an AD600 at 1/2, so hopefully you can apply that to your experience for an answer.

The LEDs should be shooting the light evenly throughout any angle you can see them, so yes they might be slightly less powerfull around the center of the reflector because they don't bounce near the mount, but they will compensate with the fact that they face stright in the middle. I don't thing that should affect much of anything, especially with the size of the distance it has with the center. Same goes for the bulb, between the center and the upper slot, you will barely see any difference in modifiers top to bottom eveness. You are very picky I feel.

After letting it sit for 15 min it now works. So the lesson is not to try to take rapid pics wait for the light to refresh before taking more. Lesson learned and thanks for the replies.

My AD B2 just arrived yesterday! QUESTION - At 3:30 what did you mean about it giving you a ⅓ stop extra power when still using a single AD200?

  • @robhallphoto

    @robhallphoto

    6 жыл бұрын

A single ad200 + single barebulb in AD-B2 is 1/3 stop extra power over a single ad200/barebulb in a bowens S mount adapter due to the reflective plate of the AD-B2.

+Ramir Sioson if you aren't using the AD600 at 1/1 all the time, I would recommend the AD-B2 setup over the AD600. The AD-B2 has the benefit of being 2 lights when you don't need the power and is a tad bit lighter compared to the AD600, while only giving up .5 stops of max power.

I thought you were not supposed to handle flash tubes with your bare hands ?

  • @robhallphoto

    @robhallphoto

    7 жыл бұрын

+Simon Bear You are correct because oils on your hand + heat could cause damage. But the flash tube itself is the inner part. The outer part is just glass to protect it, not the bulb itself. On both the AD200/AD360II the tube is not exposed to contact.

Hi Robert, after watching your video, this video popped up on my feed: kzread.info/dash/bejne/q32myMuxibGznto.html You commented that neither you nor 4 others were able to replicate his results. The data that he presents shows a 0.3-0.4 stop gain with a AD360 bulb, which is at the edge of being a useful modification over the stock configuration. I am curious if you and the other people who you talked to followed his methodology exactly (drilling the smaller sockets to make them bigger, and enlarging the small pins to ensure a good connection in the bigger sockets), or if you followed a different procedure. I can't find any documentation of his procedure in the video descriptions (maybe they have been removed since the video was originally published). I currently have a AD400 Pro and two AD200s. A stock AD-B2 doesn't really have much usefulness for me, as I can just use my AD400 Pro when I need 400Ws. However, being able to do another 0.4 stops over a stock AD-B2 brings me very close to the output of a AD600, which saves me from having to own a 600Ws light in the very rare situations when I need more than 400Ws. I would really appreciate it if you can provide more information about your experience so that I can make an informed decision on this. Thank you!

Yes, that is true for SMD leds that have a narrow V-shaped pattern. Not so true for round head LEDs with decent wide pattern. Besides , the flash bulb is completely round and even the tube has a turn. Think about using a speedlight head into a softbox. Speedlights have a tube. Can you see that on images when using a softbox? I don't think it really matters that much.
