Lee I walked around the Rocks in 1997 when I was last in Aus. I love Australia and could quite happily live there.

I love The Rocks area of Sydney. I used to go fishing under the Harbour Bridge with my two brothers when we were children. We never had any luck but it was always fun. I grew up calling Sydney, steak and kidney. My relatives had a tendency to use rhyming slang but it is a dying practice now. Inner city Sydney used to be inhabited mainly by blue-collar factory workers from Australia, Britain, Ireland and Europe.These days only those with large incomes can afford to live there. My family lived in an old, leaky, run down terrace house not much different to some of those terraces you might find in the UK. Welcome to Steak and Kidney.

Remember your History! William Bligh was involved in THREE mutinies. The famous "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1789), the Royal Navy mutiny at Spithead (1797), and the Rum Rebellion (1808). Whilst only partly responsible for the Spithead mutiny (he was just one of the many tyrannical masters of the Navy at that time), he was directly responsible for the other two. However, to navigate a WAY overcrowded ship's longboat (maximum capacity of 10, and 20 were aboard) with minimal supplies and only a sextant and pocket watch to use for navigation (no charts) was one of the most epic voyages in history. They arrived in Batavia after 47 days and a journey of nearly 4000 miles, where Bligh was able to report the mutiny.

The oldest European building in Australia (though theres not much left of it) predates Cadmans cottage by almost 200 years. Its a small walled "fort" built on a tiny island in offshore Western Australia. It was built by some of the survivors of the Dutch ship Batavia which was wrecked there in 1629 and the survivors basically split into 2 factions and slaughtering of one by the other ensued. Its a fascinating but gory story if you google it. Some of the Batavias hull is on display in Fremantle museum I think from memory.

When Sydney was founded in 1788, New South Wales was the Eastern half of the Continent. Other colonies were Victorian latecomers. Hence Georgian buildings only in Sydney in Aus. History! The Australian Museum began in 1837 in Sydney, it is the oldest Museum in Australia. David Attenborough is a big fan.

Enjoying your Videos in Sydney. As a Sydneysider I have one small criticism, you tend to give the impression that Sydney is Britain in the sun and ignoring the fact Sydney is extremely diverse . We have huge communities from all over Asia, India, the middle east, Sth. America, the Pacific Islands etc. Greater Sydney is nearly 6 million people and in many areas nobody would eat Fish n Chips !

John Job Crew Bradfield went to a few places when researching what would be the best bridge design for Sydney. The original plan was to build a cantilever bridge, but when Bradfield and his team visited New York in the 1920s, they obviously took note of the Hell Gate Bridge. There really weren't a lot of design options for a large bridge capable of carrying trains, while also keeping the harbour clear for shipping, once a suspension bridge was removed as an option Yes, most of the steel in the bridge came from Dorman Long's mills in Redcar, England, with over 20% coming from BHP's mill in Newcastle, north of Sydney. A lot of it would have been cut to size (and they probably did some test assembly/assembly of various bits) before shipping it to Australia, saving in shipping costs and allowing for quicker erection in Sydney. I have seen claims the bridge was fabricated in England, but really, considering the size of most of the pieces, the vast majority of the fabrication (riveting mostly) would have happened in Sydney. BTW - Town Hall and Wynyard stations were inspired by the New York Subway, St James and Museum stations were inspired by the London Underground, as a result of Bradfield's overseas trips. That's why they look so different.

Maca & Andy are a good fit , like Morecambe & Wise or the Two Ronnies .. downunder Maca is all go , flat out with information .. Andy is more subtle and brings him back to base point.

Any building that's one of the oldest in Sydney is one of the oldest in Australia.

Ibises were sacred to the ancient Egyptians and for good reason. They ate the grubs that ate the roots on crops, notably rice. More ibises around, the better the crop. Ibises do this without smashing down the crop like ducks are prone to do.

The design was 'copied' by request of NSW Public Works, however, Sydney is significantly wider, higher and longer than Hell's Gate, and that's something that can't be *stolen*. The design was by Mott, Hay and Anderson, the fabricator and contractor was Dorman Long... (same as for the Tyne Bridge)

I agree about Watson's Bay and the fish and chips at Doyles. Travel to the Central Coast for the day. The train trip to Gosford through the Hawkesbury river is lovely and a daily commute for many people getting to the office in Sydney. I did the commute for years and loved each daily sunrise train journey.

Very impressive.

Little known fact … when the first fleet arrived in Sydney cove the aborigines standing on the harbour bridge would throw spears down upon the unsuspecting Brits, forcing them to a tea up on shore declaring it was not very sporting of the Aussies.

And Captain Bligh became Governor Bligh, the Governor of NSW in 1806, after surviving the Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789, 17 years earlier. As Governor, trying to clean up NSW, he was arrested by the NSW Corps (military unit known as the Rum Corps, that controlled NSW via rum trade) during the coup d’état, known as the Rum Rebellion, and was deposed. But later the British Government declared this action illegal. Bligh had a very eventful life.

If you are going to walk across the harbour bridge do it at sunset the harbour and the city will look awesome and it won’t be so hot.

Lee, when you get a coffee (not real coffee, yeah those sugared up drinks called lattes and frappuccino's), toss the straw and the lid and drink it straight out of the cup. You are sitting down, so no need to worry about spills.

We stayed in The Rocks area when we stayed in Sydney. Great location. Xx

Great vid Lee 😊 One suggestion though. My Mrs asked me where Bondi & the rocks were in relation to the city centre (say Pitt St) as she couldn’t work it out. Maybe at some point include a map view so viewers can get a flavour of what they are looking at? Keep up the good work buddy 👏

The Rocks are North of the CBD, virtually under the Harbour Bridge on the Harbour, Bondi Beach is East of the CBD 9 Km and on the Tasman Sea 👌

I love this area from what I have seen here.. and Andrew is a mighty fine tour guide.. that part with the hospital was interesting.. because I used to be an ICU nurse.. keep them coming those vlogs.. and without the music.. is aux naturelle 😂

I did have some doubt about Andrew's comment about the number of "pokies" in Sydney in a previous video. I thought he may have meant in NSW or in Australia. However he wasn't too far wrong! To quote the Financial Review of 19/9/22, "The new Australian correspondent of The Washington Post, Micheal Miller, was struck by the ubiquity of poker machines. Earlier this year, he decided to write a story for his masthead. “Australia is home to less than half a per cent of the world’s population but has 20 per cent of its pokies - and 80 per cent of those located outside casinos,” wrote Miller."😎 I believe many of the games on the slots in Vegas were designed by Aristocrat here in Australia.
