We Went To Gay Conversion Therapy Camp (Part 1/3)

Ойын-сауық

Watch Part 2 now on VICE: bit.ly/Gay-Conversion-P2
Conversion therapy is the practice of "curing" gay people by trying to turn them straight through counseling and lifestyle restrictions. The practice dates back to the early Freudian period, when homosexuality was considered pathological and attempts to treat it were deemed appropriate. Today, however, homosexuality has been removed from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders, and conversion therapy is considered ineffective, harmful, and potentially deadly.
Regardless of a nationwide battle toward the acceptance of same-sex marriage and equal rights for gay people, conversion therapy is still a problem, and it's being practiced every single day in the United States and throughout the world.
In this special report, VICE gets exclusive access to one of the hundreds of gay-conversion-therapy organizations, groups, and sessions in the United States. At the Journey into Manhood program, men pay more than $600 to attend a weekend retreat where they participate in exercises and activities the staff members claim will help them battle their same-sex orientation. The only qualification to become a staff member is to have successfully completed the program.
The report meets with the founder of reparative therapy, Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, who is illegally practicing on minors in the State of California, and investigates the controversial legal battle to fight conversion therapy for individuals under 18 years of age. We also travel to the annual Gay Christian Network Conference, speak with former "ex-gay" leaders including John Smid of Love in Action, who is now married to his gay partner, and hear the grueling stories of the individuals who have survived this brutal practice.

@Jeske Wljers IKR! 😲 seriously, as a hetero woman I would LOVE to see interviews of wives of men like this. Hey, maybe they're asexual or in their own denial and the partnership works for them, too. But I was wondering about the wives even before read your comment. I'd be really surprised to hear any of these guys have a healthy sex life with a hetero, sexual woman.

I had a bisexual bf once that would turn gay on me from time to time. He left me for another woman, but eventually chose the gay route. This really upset his preacher father. I heard of a 12-step program called homosexuals anonymous and I told him about it. I thought he'd be mad but he was delighted! I think he must have gone to it because he did get married and have two children. From the looks of his wife, he might have met her there.

@@nancyminui9108 🙄 he's probably still gay. Just because you get a new look for your outward appearance doesn't mean your instincts or true self has changed. I dated a "bi" guy too, he left after he came out as gay and now he's happy graduated from college and loves his boyfriend to death. His parents are super religious yet... As everyone must at some point, they learned to live with it and still love him because at the end of the day, he's their son. Or hell... I don't know... Maybe your ex is STILL BISEXUAL. The literal point of being bi is being attracted to both sexes, if he has a wife that doesn't make him straight and I think it's odd and very rude to say "and from the looks of his wife he probably met her there" what are you getting at?

I grew up to become a very str8 acting guy and indeed when I did finally come out many many many years later my friends were fairly blown away and suprised. One day this will be proven though to what point I'm not sure other than to explain to str8 people that there's no more choice in sexual attraction than your eye color. @jameskennerley6308

    5 жыл бұрын

@@dimosereqko2 - Racism and homophobia, while both forms of morally repugnant bigotry, are completely different. The depression and subsequent suicide of many gay people (particularly teens) comes about because of years of shaming, bullying, ridicule and being disowned by their own friends and families for being who they are. Black people are subjected to systematic and societal disadvantage. What they are forced to endure is different. Women are sexually objectified, harassed and assaulted and generally not taken as seriously as men are in many cases. Again, they endure dangers and disadvantages that men largely do not, but what they endure is very different to specifically what gay people endure. It's a lot more complex than simply "if gay people became depressed and killed themselves because of homophobia, then black people would do the same because of the racism". You need to understand these issues better and really look at the causes and effects of different forms of discrimination.

You say gay men are into one night stands as if straight people don't do that

  • 6 жыл бұрын

That's actually one of the things they didn't lie about. Gay dating is very.... Well, it's what happens when you put a bunch of men together without women to even it out. Lesbian dating is what happens when you have all women with no men to balance it out. Mostly people settle down over time though. It's ussually guys in their early 20's who've just come out of the closet or started figuring themselves out, so they want it and they want it now. And when they live in conservative areas where they can't be open and honest due to discrimination, they'll also want it in secret, with near complete strangers. That's kind of sad, but the homophobes are to blame for that happening.

I actually attended this “Journey Into Manhood” weekend years ago. These videos portray it accurately, but omit many of the more disturbing practices led by unskilled, unlicensed, non-professionals. One of the men I attended with ended up committing suicide. One of the founders - Dave Matheson - has now come out as gay and disavowed his harmful practices. Thankfully, I survived and - shocker - I’m still gay and have happily been with my partner for 5 years now. If you are reading this and considering conversion therapy, please know the people running these camps are deeply misguided and ashamed of who they are. You are beautiful just as you are, and your sexuality does NOT need any repairing!

Also, Rich Wyler - the other founder of “People Can Change”, which apparently now calls itself “Brothers Road” after all the scandals, and who is featured in these videos - lived as a gay man for a long time then decided to be a good Mormon boy and marry a woman. He claims to be happily married, and he also happily makes money off of vulnerable, religiously abused, gay men convincing them they can “heal” their sexuality. I’ve seen him get naked and frolic in the woods with other naked men in “non-sexual and healing ways.” Stay away, people!

Being Gay is NOT a choice; no more than being left handed, instead of right handed, is a choice. In God's infinite wisdom, we were born that way. Nowhere in the 10 commandments does it say that being Gay is a sin. It DOES say that murder (Thou shall not kill) is a grave sin. And by the way, killing someone's character, humiliating them in public, destroying his or her livelihood, is a form of murder, according to the Bible, Talmud, and Midrash (Hebrew scholarly texts by great Biblical sages). When (Straight) people get bent out of shape about someone Gay, it's almost always an ego issue, where they feel threatened that if they associate with someone Gay, others will think them as Gay as well.

It's a symptom of a scoiety that treats gay as though it were bad. That there are places that try to "cure" gay reenforce the idea that gay is bad. As the video said they target people at around the ages of 16-24, around the time when your in highschool and you have to be around people who are immature, looking for people to single out, and when everyone is stressed out trying to find themselves already. If you exist in a world where you being gay is a wound that animals will pounce on than you will end up believing some pretty crazy things and take on some harmful actions.

suggesting that all homophobes are secretly gay is a form of blaming us for our own oppression and it's pretty cruel. don't do it.

Most importantly, not worrying about what anybody or some god thinks, the real question is, "are you happy" If the answer is yes, thats all that matters. And if a god can't accept you for loving anyone, then they aren't worth your praise. And there are a hell of a lot more straight smokers than gay 😂😂😂

So we should do WHATEVER we want as long as it makes us happy?

@@noahblanco6105 No, you still have to respect the rights of others. Think of your rights as your body. I can swing my fists around all I want, but my right to swing my fist ends at the tip of your nose. You can do whatever you want to be your happiest self as long as you do not suppress the rights of others.
