We Went to a Christmas Tree Farm | Picking out a tree

We had a blast going to the Christmas Tree Farm in Topton. We picked out a tree, bought some ornaments, and had Mexican Food all in the same day!
Look out for part two - decorating the tree - coming later this week!

I always save the little slice off the trunk and date them. I have 30 years of trunk slices. Some of them I have wood burned the year and other details of the year. Others are done in sharpie. I drill a hole in the top and tie on a pretty bow.

Our tradition has always been to harvest a live tree in the wild. It usually involves snowshoes, a sled, a bow saw, an axe and a $5 Christmas tree permit from the US Forest Service. A balsam fir is the preferred species because it is so aromatic. Any of the lower limbs which are cut off are used to make a wreath. Nothing is wasted. The family outing is more precious than the tree we bring home. Memories last a lifetime.

Funny story that happened to us this past weekend.... On Saturday My dad said he was going hunting and we ( my husband, kids and I) told my mom we were just going to be checking out the left over black Friday sales,...later that day we both came home with a Christmas tree for her 🤣🤣 so she has two trees one on her porch and one in her living room. Definitely made a memory for sure. 💞🎄

A Christmas memory. When son was younger, took him to cut our tree. They shook it for us, wrapped it, and we took it home. We always put it in the stand and left it out on patio overnight to let it fall out some. Next day brought in and decorated. Then on third day I go to turn on the lights and oh my gosh! The tree was covered in spider webs! One joke, spider webs. I removed precious ornaments, and had to spray it with spider spay, later picked of webs. Never forget that tree🎄😂

My grandmother who is now passed away gave me an entire Christmas village made of ceramic. She made the set back in the early 1970's and it was always on display in her home until about 2015. Like I say each figure and building in the set was made of ceramic and then hand painted by her. It's got a large church and house that light up from the inside and windows that are made of a colored glass material. The Ceramic Christmas trees even light up from the inside with those little transparent glass beads. There are about 15 people in the town. I hope to display the set in my home until it's time to pass it on to the next generation.

Y'all are so funny! Matt and Tipper are so quiet in the truck. Y'all were their entertainment! 🎄😂🎄 I kept watching for a Charlie Brown tree. I thought of another KZread channel that I watch. Moss Family TV. In today's they made Christmas ornaments for their tree. Falon had saved the bottom part of the tree trunk to dry out over the year. Then Titus sawed some rounds off. Then the whole family painted ornaments for the tree. I thought of y'all and how crafty y'all are! Thanks for taking us along! 🎄❤️🎄

Our tradition was always going to a Christmas tree farm and cut a tree down with a saw. We each took turns sawing it down. There are 8 in our family. Good memories and tradition that we instilled in our own families. Love the video.

Ok so it was 93 degrees today in Melbourne Australia, keeping a tree looking good in this heat is an effort so you have to get a real tree you get it nearer to Christmas. Cooking a full Christmas lunch in the heat makes for one very frazzled cook, I pray for a cooler day. I suppose I could do a bbq lunch but I just can’t bring myself to do it...it’s got to be the turkey, ham, pork and roast veggies with all the trimmings along with the traditional Christmas pudding, Christmas fruit cake, mince pies and a new addition toblerone mousse for those with less mature taste buds and fellow chocoholics. I love your posts along with your mum’s and the pastor Lon (sorry can’t remember how to spell his name) I am going to try the arsh tater cake for a bit of variety. Have lots of christmassy fun!😆😉

Good morning Ladies. The last real tree we had was back in 1994. My son was a Club scout. They had a tree tent and sold trees for extra funds. We ended up with the last tree on the lot. It was quite similar to the Charlie Brown tree. Puny looking and quite dry already. We had it in the livingroom for 3 weeks. When the time came to drag it out the door....lol....it had practically no needles left. Needless to say, we never had another real tree. LOL Great video. Thank you.

I've notice the last year or two its loosing some needles "like me and my hair". HaHa. But the lights are pretty so we will keep it a little longer. God Bless. Jean

Living in Ashe Country, we have it down to an art here in Watauga and Ashe County, NC We always go the Friday right after thanksgiving for our tree nd a wreath. There are some amazing tree farms up here. Hope someday you can make it up north to get your tree.

It’s beautiful to see y’all do things as a family. My son’s usually flying around the country working and it makes me miss the family times together. Katie is a essential travel partner, she can keep you laughing until you get hungry and in a bad mood, then she whoops out the food from her jacket. We put our fake tree up the day after Thanksgiving and it comes down usually the day after Christmas. This year it came down Monday after Christmas. Love watching your family in your everyday activities and your music. Your "Christmas in Dixie" song really touched my wife and me. It was a favorite of my Great Uncle for many years. He has been gone many years now, but he became like a grandfather to my wife before we were even married. When we hear this song, we always think of the time it was getting close to Christmas and he hadn't heard it on the radio yet. He called the local radio station and asked them if they would play it. They did. It was the only time he had ever called and requested a song. Brings back a lot of memories.

The tradition in our family is to go to the farm on Christmas Eve!!! Of course I was the worry wort hoping they weren't all gone, so far so good lol The other parts are far funnier! That beautiful child and her dad would find the tallest, so it often bent on the ceiling and wide so we had to duck under half of it to get in the front door!! Now for her tradition...lol..... Her Birthday is in February so the tree stayed up till after 2/10!!! Hahahahah. We made many of our decorations in our Brownie and Girl Scout Troop's and crafting at home but we always held to our belief that it wasn't our Birthday's so we had to make things for others too, not just buy stuff from stores. Although we were very lucky to have raised her on our lovely river in a town that's considered a tourist town in the country in between two major cities so we could buy all kinds of funny happy things for others. And this year now that I'm living so far from home I won't need go all the way back for most of what I buy others because I've found Another very cool place for soap and way cool jewelry! I Looooove Christmas!! ❤

A birds nest is good luck. If there isn’t a natural one ,people put on an artificial one. I also add a spider(not real) see the legend of the Christmas spider. A pickle (glass) hidden on the tree, the person who finds it gets an extra little gift. A favorite ornament of mine is a 2 inch wooden ornament. It’s called “the naughty boy” he has a. Blue bottom and a red hat. On the back of his head thru the hat is a knob that you push thru the hat. This makes the little boy stick out his tongue! I’ve never seen another one. I love a natural Christmas trees. We have several tree farms in CT. You get hay rides use of their saws a wagon to haul it. You can purchase garlands, swags, wreaths, hot chocolate, coffee. You pay by the foot. We usually purchase a fraizer fir. A little more expensive but the softness ,needle retention, longevity and fragrance are the best! So glad you kept the branches ! The angels , are collectible, and sweet! I love that you did this family adventure!

I remember when I was little my father sketched and cut out a star from a card board box and then covered it with tin foil to use as the tree topper for our tree . We used to go ride around the woods looking for a suitable tree , sometimes we would come home with one we thought looked maybe a bit sparse , but once we got it home and decorated we all loved it. You folks all got a smile that looks like Christmas I thought ! Nice truck dad !

The prettiest tree that I have ever seen is at the Candle Shop of the Poconos in Pennsylvania. It was a hugh artificial tree that looked real that had snow on the top. It was decorated perfectly but the cost was $900.00. That is just not me, I am a traditional person and love live trees. Even Charlie Brown trees. Giving life to some forgotten tree is what is best for me.

I have actually had a Norfolk pine the little ones you get at the stores at Christmas time. I received it as a gift. It is now in my front room almost to the top of the 12 ft ceiling. I received it in 2000.

I have many Griswold family tree hunting Experiences 🙂 here's just one. Me, my friend and our girlfriend's were driving around looking for 2 perfect trees on the edge of our country roads. His girlfriend yells stop, that's the one I want. He climbs 20 feet up this pine tree to cut the top out while I watch for traffic. When the tree top fell it almost hit me in the road. She looked at it and said, Nah, I don't like it, come on down!😳🤣 Glad y'all decided to go to a Tree Farm and get a Perfect Tree! Can't decide which blooper was the funniest!😂

Thank you for making my day. I feel right at home listening to the way you talk. I understand every word from everyone. I am a native 58 year old man who was born in Asheville. I lived in black mountain before and I currently live in Swannanoa. I work at Kearfott between black mountain and Swannanoa. I wish I had some good old fashioned cooking like your momma does. I have no one really left to chat with. Your videos make me happy. Thank you so much...

We trade fresh chocolate chip cookies for a neighbor's cedar tree in his sheep field. That has been our tradition for the past 10 years.

After about 22/23 years of having a fake tree (gosh I can't believe it's been that long! lol) we got a real one this year! We had them when I was real little, but I guess it was easier for my mom + dad having kids. When we did get real trees we would go up to my great grandpas farm! Don't remember much but we have the pictures!!

When i was coming up we had to cut our tree from the woods. We thought we didnt have the $ to buy a christmas tree. All it took was one slip of the saw followed by a trip to the ER to encourage my parents to make some budget changes for the future. God bless merry Christmas love you all.

I heard recently that if you keep your wrists and ankles warm that helps warm the rest of you. So I had a pair of thick socks with worn-out feet. I cut the feet off and just wear the tops of the sock up over my ankles as an additional layer. I’ve noticed that helps me stay a lot warmer😊.

Beautiful tree 🌲 Brings back childhood memories!! When I was growing up in the early 80s I would go out in the wood of our farm and cut a tree with and cross cut saw. It was usual a Spurs pine, that and regular pines are all that is around here. We would place the tree in a five gallon bucket and fill half way up with gravel and that was our stand. And would water it along. Lol.

Blue spruce is the only Christmas tree I’ve ever had, family tradition. Hay rides and hot chocolate through the rows of trees as we’d look them all over, nests are a cool bonus I agree.🎄 love your sister bond!

We always got a real tree until we retired. Then we got a good artificial. I made one of those ceramic trees. It was in a box that didnt make it on the moving ship. So many things in that box that we so special. Get you a Frasier Fir. They are so beautiful. And, they are grown in your area. Oh you got a frazier Fir. You are going to love it and it fills the house with its beautiful scent. Its going to loose a bunch of needles because they didnt shake the tree to get all the loose stuff out. Ha Ha y'all crack me up. Makes me miss my sis. This is the silly things we used to do.

Fun trip, ladies, and the scenery is too beautiful! i keep seeing some people say celebrating Christmas and other holidays is evil because some druids or dark religions held those days as special ritual days.. They simply are not thinking it through. Evil is in the heart and minds of people doing evil. There's not the first shred of evil in the families gathering with love, food, gifts and decoration, especially when they're making the birth of Christ as their reason for the season. I won't let evil take away such a precious family celebration of Christ. Merry Christmas to the Pressleys and every one here.

When Yvonne was still with us we went all all decorating for Christmas. She loved it so much. Since she left us and it's just me here all alone it just don't seem right. I gave all her decorations to the kids. Missy said "Daddy, do you want me to put you up a little tree?" I told her yes. "Where?" "At your house!" "Why?" "Nobody will see it here!" Losing a loved one is hard! Especially at birthdays, anniversaries and holidays!

You video reminded me of several Christmas tree stories from my life. When I was little we lived in an apartment. My mom and dad picked up a tree at a tree lot. The tree was wrapped in string and frozen...from being outside. They set it up in our dinning room and went to bed. In the morning with tree thawed and the branches dropped it was so big it touched every wall. We couldn't even enter the dinning room. When I was older and married my wife wanted to decorate the tree with homemade decorations made with food, like popcorn and cranberry garland and gingerbread--men cookies. When she was done the tree was beautiful. In the morning however, the dogs had taken a bite from every gingerbread-man on the tree....it looked like a tree full of people who were missing their limbs. Finally, one year we took down our tree and through it into the woods behind our house to let it return to the earth. But much to our surprise, in the spring, the tree had grown new roots and was sending up new sprouts and limbs. Over the years it grew into a tall pine tree again.
