With the rafters at the back of the house now extending from the ridge beam to ground level, we are able to turn our attention to closing in the front of our A-Frame. We need to build a new wall on top of the existing A-Frame roof, sheath the front and then install new rafters from the third level loft to the front of the addition.

We are a couple who are building our own home from the ground up in the mountains of West Virginia. After living near the city our entire lives we finally decided to sell it all, pack up our 3 kids and live in an RV on our 73 acres while building our own debt free, off-grid house and learning to live a more self-reliant life.
Our house build is documented entirely on our main channel "Wild Wonderful Off-Grid" and the buiness/work related side of our life can be found on our secondary channel "Josh and Erin- The After Show". Here you will see us renovating our Cafe, opening/operating the Cafe with goods from our farm, building/furnishing/running our short term rentals, finding/operating our other real estate investments and more. I think the shock of suffering a minor stroke just out of the blue will take the most time to fade, but my big sister had a (more major) one almost twenty years ago now and made a 100% recovery with absolutely no repercussions since, so I hope and pray for Erin to recover fully like that too. She is a total rock in that family 🙏🙏🙏🙏💕

Loved that Erin is teaching Ellie the economics of running an egg selling business. That's very important to show your kids. Many young people go to college and when they come out they don't even know how to handle a checking account. Ellie and the boys are being trained by Josh and Erin the how too's of life. With all of those metal roofs it makes scence to capture all of that rainwater into a vertical water tank that can be gravity fed to your fruit trees, vegtable and herb gardens. Based on the rain fall in your climate zone, you should be able to capture close to 500,000 gallons of water per year. And since that water can be fed by gravity, you could reduce your monthly power consumption by atleast 30% to 50%. That translates to saving thousands of dollars per year on your water bill. You could even install a small in line water turbine to generate additional electricity that would make the water saving system even more efficient just because you live on a hill. I did all of those things just mentioned including water saving toilets, faucets and shower head fixtures, energy star certified kitchen appliances and mechanical equipment. I also use the gravity fed gray water from the house to irrigate the herb garden and fruit trees. If freezzing pipes are a problem because of all the snow, insulating the underground pipes wrapped with heat tape can help avoid those problems.

Tree frogs can be loud but golly be glad you weren't in TN the past three weeks. Not only were the cicadas loud, they were everywhere...flying at your face, flying into the car, garage and house. Swarming on fences. Sheesh, I'm glad that's over for 13 years!

I love A-frame design, because it looks nice and it's very "forgiving". No one would see if the house is not straight up, vertical due the design. But I would like a better loft space. So, I was thinking that maybe the loft should be on 2 levels, like at 1 level and half you have some space to walk around and have a desk and closet as you normally have into a bedroom, and at the top level you just have a sleeping pod. So, somewhere at the middle of the house you go up on the stairs and reach the 1.5 level, then from the 1.5 level you jump into bed (sleeping pod) climbing another small ladder (3-5 steps). The children could spend most of the day at the 1.5 level ( playing or doing their homework). To make that happen, I would dig a small basement ( 4ft underground ) at the middle of the house for kitchen and/or bathroom. Basement would also offer some safe space during a tornado, there's also room for a potential furnace or just a safe space (no freezing) for plumbing. "There's a tornado (there's a tornado) in my city (in my city) Hit the basement (hit the basement), that shit ain't pretty (shit ain't pretty) Rugged whiskey (rugged whiskey) 'cause we survivin' ('cause we survivin') Off red cup kisses, sweet redemption, passin' time, yeah"

Well I just ordered two bars of Beer soap. They almost look good enough to eat, the way you make them. Somehow washing my mouth out with soap takes on a whole new meaning. 😉🤣Looking forward to getting them. Love the Appalachian candle I bought back in Jan. Thanks everyone!

I think you are a wonderful family. You are doing a wonderful job with your children and your home. Erin, I am concerned about the amount of heavy lifting you are doing. It wasn't long ago you had a health scare please be careful and don't hide it if you feel at all unwell, tell Josh. I really love all of you but sometimes you scare the living daylight out of me with how high up you are on that build. I can't wait until it is finished and you start designing the inside. Both of you have great taste. I send you all lots of hugs from Glasgow, Scotland. Take care. Xxx
