We've Only Just Begun (Tori Holub) reaction

Ойын-сауық

This is my second reaction to Tori, and I'm even more impressed with how she conveys emotion with her husky contralto and higher end voice, sounding quite similar to Karen Carpenter but with some exquisite differences.
She and James Wilkas (instrumentation) took me back a half-century with their remarkable rendition of this classic beauty.
Here's the Jim MIDI channel with the original:

Dear daxXmisiX: I didn't know that there were so many people out there that loved Ms. Karen's voice the way that I did when I was little (1961 - 3 years younger than Ms. Karen). Tori is the closest to her voice. Thank you for this review. I completely agree with your analysis.

I believe that you would very much appreciate Tori's release of a brand spanking new "Carpenters" song, it is TRULY "Something to believe in"

I, like you, was introduced to Karen's voice at a young age and it captured my heart and became the baby which I would judge all other female singers as far as control, clarity and other qualities. In my lifetime there are only a few I hold as high as Karen: Barbara, Ann Wilson, Judy, Whitney and that's about it. Tori's voice is the closest to Karen's I've heard and she replicates Karen's performances so convincingly and respectfully without taking liberties or changing anything to make it her own. Great reaction vid.

Ya know, most reactors are bowled over by this, but don't know that Tori did a lot of stuff on her own, which can be heard at her site. Myriad Carpenters covers, but also Olivia Newton-John and other artists. On top of that, she's a brilliant technician, putting together her own overdubs using a TASCAM multitrack deck and the ProTools sequencing software. On one video she demonstrates how the Carpenters overdubbed. She records different parts of a harmony one at a time, then plays them back one at a time, then all together. She's got a great ear; I think she's brilliant. And, yes, you're right; she's a really sweet young woman.

This song was initially introduced in a TV commercial from "Crocker Bank" (now defunct). The commercial is on YT but the video quality is very poor and song was sung the Paul Williams (one to the 2 songwriters credited with this song). Richard Carpenter heard the song and the rest is history; becoming one of their biggest hits. BTW, Tori does a nice recording of Merry Christmas, Darling audio only.

@daXmusiX I think you're the first one who blended excerpts of Tori's Carpenters renditions together in one video. Very nicely blended I must say. Remember those Timelife greatest hits commercials with the titles scrolling on the TV 😃

Been anxious to see your reaction to this cover ever since you did Tori's version of the Bacharach /David medley. Enjoyed that and this one even more, mostly because IMO you totally nailed it. Where the majority of reactions to this video that I've seen naturally focus on the similarities Tori has with Karen, not that many overtly recognize the differences that Tori has and give her credit for it. She's obviously covering Karen's style but it's still her own unique sound. Thank you for emphasizing that aspect. And I would be remiss to not acknowledge the fabulous talent of Jim Wilkas and the Band Hub musicians in the video. Ourstanding production as well, showing all the parts. Also have to thank Joe for sponsoring the reaction. He's a beast when it comes to spreading the word about Tori. Thanks again.

Thank you very much. I think I made a mistake on the first reaction that I try to be careful about. I tried a bit much to push Tori into the Karen box instead of letting her talent breathe. As I said in this reaction, I really like the nuance differences. Thanks again. And yes, thanks to Joe.

Thanks for a lovely and very perceptive reaction. I agree about Tori’s voice. It’s got such smooth range. She can add some Karen inflections, then it becomes an homage to the great lady. When those aren’t there, it’s just Tori and her magical voice. Also her accuracy is crazy good, pitch perfect if you will. She and this song were analyzed by Fil, on his Wings of Pegasus channel. A must watch now that you’ve seen this. He even did a follow up a week later. Gee I wonder who asked him to look at this video? Hmmm. I’m not sure if you’d like to react/analyze her most recent single? It’s a new song written in the style of Bacharach/Carpenters and arranged for Tori. It’s called Something To Believe In. Written by Richard Kraft and arranged and produced by Jimena Caballero. Interested?. I’ll link it below. Oh and Tori’s surname has soft vowels so Ha Lubb. I think your comparison of Tori to Karen is spot on. Tori is not as a reincarnation as some are saying, but she really is quite good, the best among those who are singing Carpenter’s music in Karen’s style. No one could ever replace Karen’s velvety voice imho. Nevertheless, I hope to hear not only more Carpenter’s music from her but also some original music from Tori in the Carpenter’s style !!!

Hi yet again Dave! I’m back with a different request. I mentioned Tori’s single in my other comment, which is great. This one however, is a gut punch. No Karen comparison (like her single) but it is the song Richard and Cynthia Weil wrote for Karen and the next Carpenters album. “Something In Your Eyes” which Karen died before even hearing it. In 1987 Dusty Springfield sang it with Richard on his solo “Time” album. Tori sang this song at the 55th Anniversary Acoustic Night. It was recorded by the official videographer. The video looked good but the audio was boomy. Tori’s voice rang through but she wasn’t happy with the result. So when she got home to her studio, she re-recorded it and used a clean piano track from her concert pianist, Drew Jansen. She added backing vocals and used video and stills from the event. Knowing Karen never sang it, what do we have here? I’ll let you discover that in your reaction. This is different, it’s the Carpenters song that never was. One more thing to note. For the first time, in the video notes, she gave herself “Producer” credit. In my opinion, finally. She made this. Boy did she ever. Here’s the link and I look forward to your reaction/review.
