thanks for the sharing those stories O.G........I was living in Phoenix during the early days of MTV and cringing from the shit show I saw....local alternative radio station KSTM started playing Mojo Nixon and I felt like everything was gonna be ok ......RIP Mojo

I made this comment the day Mojo passed. I shared a joint with Mojo behind a club in Miami and he got a little discombobulated and he pointed me out in the crowd and said that's the guy that got me fucked up. It's one of the greatest moments of my life and sad to hear that he is gone so soon. I know he had a wife and children so my thoughts and prayers are with them.

I’m an Outlaw Country fan. They do it they way radio should be done. Mojo is THE voice of Outlaw Country. Outrageous, irreverent, hilarious, and kind-hearted. His yodel of the words “Outlaw Country!” define the spirit and identity of the station. I’m so glad Outlaw and Otis brought Mojo into my life. I might have missed him, and that would have been a tragedy. I look forward to catching up with him down the road. Rest In Fun, Mojo Nixon!

He brought many diverse people together. I found him through the punk rock scene back in the 80s. He was beloved in that scene, and I've seen him live at least 8 times over the years.

I remember seeing Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper in the 80's in my hometown, in a basement bar St. Catharines Canada, with Big Sugar (who at the time were a 3 piece, with a standup bass player) & the Arc Angels headlining .What an amazing night of mischief !!!! RIP Mojo. Thanks for the memories - awesome radio broadcaster on Sirius XM as well. I wrote a song called Glen Frey Must Also Die in tribute to Mojo's Don Henley Must Die - and chickened out in handing it to Don Felder at a casino gig in Niagara. I wish I had have - now the lyrics are just in poor taste. Slainte Mojo & Otis

No idea how many times I've seen him and Skid, but we were all Beat Farmer fans. So even if he wasn't playing, he was part of the crowd. Like Country Dick, he could steal the show on any given night. Had lunch together once.....RIP Mojo.

I've been on the last 4 Outlaw Country Cruises. Mojo was a new name to me before these; I didn't know what to expect. First gig I caught of his I wasn't offended but I wasn't sure that I liked the crass humour. This year, after seeing the brilliant documentary his bass player made, I felt much more connected, and had to go to what turned out to be the final set last Tuesday night. I feel proud to have been in the audience, hollering along as loud as the Texans surrounding me, to contribute a tiny part to what was widely considered to be his best show in years. A day or so before, he complimented me on my bass performance, but I had barely spoken to him otherwise. I would have loved to get to know him better; he was the most passionate force of positive energy.

Thank you Otis. The Beat Farmers would always please, but when Mojo would suddenly appear...true chaos. He now joins Country Dick Montana and Lester Bangs in the San Diego contingent of the heavely chior.

Mojo used to hang out in San Diego a lot. He did some recording there. Also the home of the Beat Farmers. Mojo and them were pees in a pod. Then Country Dick died and Mojo wasn't around much. I did get to see him at the Casbah and it was so much fun. I heard Mojo on Outlaw Country on the day he died. He gave a funny update from the cruise sayin how he was about to take everybody's money at the poker table. Typical Mojo. The next morning Elizabeth Cook made the announcement. Thought it was a joke. RIP Mojo

i never got the chance to see mojo live but ever since i discovered his music at the age of 16 it's been in heavy rotation since. i've been listening to mojo for 31 years and he always brought a smile to my face. "twilights last gleaming" is one of the finest american songs ever made in my opinion. mojo, i never met you but i'm going to miss you like hell. rest in peace.

I learned about Mojo Nixon back in the 80s-90s when I first heard ‘Elvis is Everywhere’ on WMMR, a rock station out of Philly. Sorry to hear of his passing. Thanks for sharing Otis!

I wore out my vinyl edition of "Frenzy" - Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper's second album. It was on such heavy rotation for me in the '80s, and it always makes me smile when those songs pop up of late when I just randomly shuffle my music library. For some reason, the line "There ain't no $30 bills with Bill Graham's picture on it!" from "Where the Hell's My Money?" always stuck in my brain. Mojo Nixon was one-of-a-kind and we're all better for it. Thanks for your remembrance of Mojo Nixon, Otis.

I saw Mojo a bunch of times in the late 80’s up until he quit touring. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen and always a blast. I met him a couple times after shows and he was cool to me. He was only on WLW for a few months. He moved over to WEBN as part of the morning crew for a few years. He played regularly at a tiny bar on Main Street during that time. I’d go listen to him now and then and bought him a few drinks. I figured it was the least i could do for all the joy he brought me and the cool music i found through him. Last time i saw hm was a few years ago at a Willie Nelson show at Riverbend. I threw my fist up and gave him a hardy MOJOOOOOOO as i passed him in the isle. He smiled and that made me happy. I didn't want to bother him so I left it at that. He's at the right hand of The King now. Elvis done called him home.

Never got to see Mojo but I’ve been digging his tunes since the 90’s! RIP

He played my prom. No joke. Opening up for Dash Rip Rock. Kicked them off stage when Mojo asked to buy necked pictures of ya'll's mom's.

I used to see Mojo at a number of venues in San Diego, and he was always a crowd pleaser. Insane motormouth high energy shows that you couldn’t ignore if you tried. The last time I saw him and got a pic with him was at Belly Up in Solana Beach for a Beat Farmers reunion and tribute to Country Dick Montana. It was a night to remember. R.I.P. you wild man, Rock N Roll Heaven is about to get a wake up call!

Love you Otis, keep up the amazing videos! I saw Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper open for Camper Van Beethoven at the UC Davis gymnasium in 1981/82. It was sooo good, and about 125 degrees in the gym, good times!

High school football friday night... I mer him outside of a show he did in Pensacola. I dont remember what was said but i do remember how surreal the whole night felt. He was doing lots of onstage yagermiester on that tour. It's definitely one of the cooler shows I have been to.

Thanks for the awesome words about Mojo Nixon Otis.I heard about him many years ago,it wasn't until after I got off heroin and had been off for a few years and one day I found one of his CD's for $1 in a goodwill.The name escapes me right now but it had "Not as much as football" on it.Mojo was a true person and artist and one of those people that kept music and rock-n-roll true and on a real,personal level where every day people could enjoy it on an underground level and never have to think about all the crap and corruption of the mainstream.I love artists that no matter what they always stay real people just surviving and being true to themselves and Mojo was definitely one of those,he was a good songwriter who always kept his integrity.Thanks for the stories Otis,have a great day despite the chill in the air and rest in peace Mojo Nixon.🙂🎸🎶☮️🎵⚡💀

Great story! I met him on the 2020 Outlaw Country Cruise. He debuted his documentary there but swore us to secrecy since he promised SXSW it would debut there. Pandemic delayed it by two years. Happy birthday, Otis!

I saw Mojo in 1989 in Santa Cruz, California. The funnest show I've EVER been to! I can remember it like it was yesterday. R.I.P. Mojo

Sorry to hear -- Mojo was so quick and so funny. Never saw him live but heard him on the radio often in the 1990s. He was a good buddy of Gary Burbank if I remember right. RIP, thanks for a lifetime of your humor and insights Mojo.

i saw Mojo with Dread Zeppelin in london ontario canada early 90's (the last great decade) FANTASTIC SHOW, Mojo headlined and went right outside after last song to be there to meet the people, it was Awesome to meet him. Also a Nascar news site i use had a notice of his death which i thought strange, cuz i do not recall any affiliation between the two since i have been watching Nascar from 1989

I feel blessed that I was able to see Skid Roper and Mojo Nixon several times in SanFrancisco back in the 80’s they put on a wonderful show! I’ll miss him. Thanks for the brilliant eulogy Otis! Great story and I’ll remember it when thinking of him!

Hubby and I were on that cruise. It is heartbreaking still. They kept it quiet for 24 hrs, then showed the Mojo Manifesto movie and while watching it I still didn't know. I thought it was just for fun, then about half hour later I found out in the Merch store and cried. All the bands after did Cheers to Mojo. His last show was Incredible and Fun!! He died how he lived, which is his motto. 😢

Dash Rip Rock announced it at their 10PM show the day it happened. I found out on the little daily note they leave at our door every morning.

Thats what use to piss me off about frat guys that would come to punk shows....they would come just to beat up or fight people....I'm really gonna miss Mojo....he was awesome live...he will be missed....RIP Mojo

In all fairness, Preacher Steve is a hell of a song. The first time I heard it was on Outlaw Country.

Otis, I was on the cruise and it was very sad and beautiful at the same time. He was the Mayor of OCC.The love for Mojo and tributes were pouring out on every show. I had a conversation with him the day before about the band 49 Winchester who he just interviewed. Mojo would always make time for the fans. Thanks for this story.

I've been a Mojo Nixon fan from the beginning. He was definitely one of a kind, funny and talented. I told some guy that Mojo Nixon passed away. He said, " Who the hell is Mojo Nixon?" I said, "If you don't know Mojo Nixon then your brain could use some fixin'." RIP Mojo Nixon🕯

My first encounter with Mojo was the Redneck Rampage video game in the early 90’s. I didn’t find Mojos music until 2014 or so and I had a moment of “wait I’ve heard this guy somewhere before”.

I was buying most everything released on Enigma/Restless, Twin-Tone, and SST Records in the mid 80's. I missed Mojo and Skid's first album, but I got Frenzy and loved it. A few years later and "Elvis is Everywhere" gets Mojo more fans. I got tickets to see him live at the Cannery in Nashville and was super excited about it. I had dropped out of college with some misguided notion of becoming a poet or another Jack Kerouac so I was working full time at a local pizza joint. I'd been doing that for 2 years. I typically worked a few week days and then Friday and Saturday nights. When I worked in the day I had to make all of the dough and prep work before working the lunch rush. When the day came for the Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper show I was feeling puny. I still went into work to see if I would feel better. I had a key to the pizza place so I was all alone for the first few hours while I made the dough and did the other prep work. I was not feeling any better and I began to think that I was going to feel too sick to see the concert later. The owner would come in about 15 minutes before we opened, but I was done with the prep work a good half hour before he would arrive. So I wrote a note saying I was sick, locked up, and left so I could rest up. I wasn't going to miss that show! Flash ahead to that evening and when I arrived at the Cannery there was Mojo Nixon just holding court telling stories before the Cactus Brothers opened the show. It was captivating. Then Mojo and Skid came out and they rocked the hell out of the Cannery that night. The next day I call into work so I can take my next shift off as the concert had taken a lot out of me. The owner then gave me this sob story about how the dough I had prepped was all wrong and that by walking out I had quit. There went my full time job. If I hadn't left early for Mojo Nixon's show I might have kept working at the pizza restaurant. I straggled through a few jobs afterward and then went back to college and got my degree. I'm not saying it was all Mojo's doing, but he definitely played a part. I hope he's burning down the malls in the afterlife. Thanks for your great work Otis!

I had just finished watching the video of Jello Biafra and Mojo together when your video appeared. And it was only a few days ago when you spoke of the passing of Brother Wayne Kramer. The coils of our mortality, but Elvis is still everywhere...Lol.

Couple friends of mine were on the cruise when he passed,said it was just awful. Thanks for this righteous tribute Otis. Like you,I met him a few times just hangin out,& he was just normal & cool,til it was MOJO time & that switch got thrown. RIP Mojo Nixon

The Double Door Inn was the happening place in Charlotte in the late 80's, I was living in Atlanta and doing a lot of work in Charotte, a lot of bands that played large venues in the ATL would play the DD on their way to DC or Chapel Hill.

I recall a place called Shrewd MF that was beside or nearby. I bought one of those buckskin fringe jackets that were so hip and a big part of your basic hippie uniform back then. 😂

Saw many epic Mojo shows in the 80's (getting my head used as a drum several times for his water bottle! 😁) The final show I saw of his was with the Pleasure Barons, it sure didn't get much better than that. Enjoyed him for years on his radio show. The world is a little darker today without him... truly one of a kind.

Hi Otis, met you at the Groove in Nashville during Americanafest years ago. I was on the cruise. We heard the emergency notification about the 14th floor. We knew it was one of the artists, as that is where they stay. It hit the ship hard emotionally. It was rough that day. But, Dash Rip Rock played their show in dedication. In fact, every show after he passed was dedicated to him. It turned out that al the people and music on the boat was the best therapy. That love and support is what got us through.

Met Mojo Nixon in the 1980's at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit. and again at Club Soda in Kalamazoo. Great Guy.

Thanks for sharing your memories. I'm going to have to check your music out now. I didn't see Mojo in concert 15 times and I never met him face to face. My friends and I used to call his KING number when we were kids and leave him crazy messages. So I like to think that he heard some of them and got a kick out of it. I was lucky enough to attend the Final Mayhem show in Austin. I will swear for the rest of my life that when the whole building was singing their hearts out at the end, I could hear Mojo's voice singing too. I remain a Toadliquors fan for life. Thank you Mojo. Your soul raves on forever.
