We've had to CULL some of the birds......

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

With the continuing poultry lockdown in the UK, we've had to take the hard decision to cull some of the chickens that we keep. Unfortunately, they didn't add anything to our flock, and were eating food that costs us money.
We've made the financial decision that they should go. We tried to sell them, but couldn't find any buyers.

I’m in the process of hatching a new batch of chicks right now. The intention is to have the females for eggs and the males for food. The price of a chicken here in Belgium 🇧🇪 has skyrocketed to approximately 20 euros for a normal farmed bird, more for a corn fed bird. Luckily there’s no lockdown here and no rules about feeding kitchen scraps . I feed grain mixed with food from leftovers and cut off greens from the local market. Also things going out of date in the supermarket where I work. I have a bantam flock and a laying flock. Egg prices are high so I sell eggs for 3 euros for 6. Cheaper and much better quality than the shop bought eggs. They sell cockerels here as a bit of a delicacy so they are not cheap either. Great video.

Very interesting video. I have excess cockerels. I'm wondering how to do the deed your videos was good to show people how to do it nicely. And also it was nice to see you in front of the camera instead of behind so we know what you look like now. Thanks for the video. Enjoy them all 🐔

That’s the culling method that I use too. It’s the most humane way that I’ve found without risking my own health with a sharp implement 😬 Thanks for sharing and giving your birds the best life & end that you can.

What a hard decision. Not an easy thing to have to do but it's life. Do you eat any of them? I was lucky to re-home our younger Brahma cockerel 2 weeks ago. We don't have enough hens to service 2 cockerels.

Sometimes we do eat them. My wife isn't keen on eating them, but the kids don't mind. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to process these guys for eating, so they went to be fox bait in traps.

I raise my birds for eggs and meat so this is very normal to me. I love them all, but they have a purpose. I give them the best life, best accommodations and whole foods I possibly can and they sustain my family.
