So, way back in 1998 (I was 30 at that time), Shivering Timbers opened with an amazing debut. ACE had a coaster event at Michigan’s Adventure on that day, and many of us waited in line for hours while the State of Michigan and CCI finished their final walk-around and inspection. Many people who were there on that day will argue, without question, I might add, Shivering Timber’s debut in 1998 is one of the greatest roller coaster debuts of all time. I will never forget the rider reactions of the first trains that stopped on the final brakes, screaming and hollering with appreciation. It was electric! The entire ride experience was, still to this day, one of the best roller coaster experiences of my life.

Shivering Timbers is the one that made me love roller coasters. It's a fantastic ride, and it is the true King of airtime. I love Steel Vengeance, but it's airtime doesn't compare to this one. I rode Timbers 5 times the first time I ever rode coasters. I seriously love that thing.

I still love Timbers, though it's gotten a lot rougher. Having ridden Steel Vengeance again, it's still my #1. And, I would say the airtime of Steel Vengeance matches if not beats Timbers. That said, Timbers is still an absolute gem. With some retracking it will be phenomenal again, and be rid of the jackhammering.

This is my home park! Fun fact: Shivering Timbers was ranked 2nd top wood roller coaster for golden ticket award 5 straight years in a row! I agree with you when most of the time I would rather drive to Kings Island or Cedar Point and I'm in the Grand Rapids area. But they have been improving the park with small things the past few years. So hopefully a big investment is on the horizon! And yes attendance is low at times ,but in the past when they had a huge investment like Thunderhawk and Grand Rapids they had record high attendance both years they came out. So I feel a large investment is most likely within 1 to 3 years, A Vekoma sit down coaster is my bet for the next coaster here. It's rather cheap and probably could get one like at Energylandia or the one at Legendia. both only cost 11 million. which is only 1 million more than the Thunderhawk investment 16 years ago. Also I strongly believe the next coaster will be the park's biggest investment ever. And this year they finally added halloween weekends finally!

The thing is is that Michigan's Adventure is actually extremely popular with locals mostly because you pay one still somewhat reasonable price and you get the excellent water park as well. One of the main reasons Cedarfair does not do any capital investment in Michigan's Adventure isn't because it's competition, but that it continuously operates in the black so therefore they don't need to do anything other than basic maintenance on it. Considering if you live in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon area near Michigan's Adventure which also isn't very far from Lansing the state capital all of those are only an hour to two hours away whereas Cedar Point is 4 1/2 to 6 hours away from any of those places. Yes CPT is a huge big crazy Park with excellent rides butt the lines are insane nowadays and to make it actually doable you have to spend multiple days or a lot of money on skip the line passes. Michigan's Adventure is a very cost-effective way to enjoy summer Amusements because the waterpark is excellent and there is Shivering Timbers which is arguably a world-class wooden coaster. It's one of Cedar Fair's jewels in it's crown and it's one of the reasons why Michigan's Adventure as long as it continues to operate in the black will stay open but unfortunately will not get the attention it deserves from Cedar Fair. I think they would benefit from an RMC Raptor. I'm not sure Wolverine Wildcat merits the RMC treatment and I certainly hope they never do it to Shivering Timbers though I'd love to see Titan track on all of Wolverine Wildcat and I wouldn't mind that with Shivering Timbers either because it's really struggling now getting rougher and rougher despite the retracting that it has had in the past. Yes I'm from Michigan and technically I've been to Cedar Point and Michigan's Adventure roughly equal numbers of times and well worth the Cedar Fair company season pass if you're in central to Southern Michigan... but even from the Detroit metro area Cedar Point is a bit of a haul. It's just far enough away to be difficult to go there do the park and then come back and one day and I would say nearly impossible nowadays. Backward in the park was cheaper in the lines weren't as long with a couple of coasters less it was way more worth it to do quick trips so I know that a lot of my friends have opted to go to Michigan's Adventure instead especially ones with kids since they opened up Camp Snoopy. I hope that Cedar Fair realizes that sends Cedar Point is so crazy busy that they need to add capital investment into Michigan's Adventure. I know that the locals would gladly pay more for a few good roller coasters other than Shivering Timbers because right now it's the only truly unique thing at the park. I always thought that it would benefit from an RMC Raptor. I think they'd be wasting their time are emceeing Wolverine Wildcat but then again I don't know they've done some pretty good small jobs but certainly it could benefit from Titan track through the whole ride. I don't want them to touch Shivering Timbers other than possibly Titan track the whole thing. It's perfect as it is but it does tend to get incredibly rough quickly after any of the retracting that's been done and I think that's because it's a Speed Demon. The ride doesn't slow down for a second to the entire thing and that's got to take its toll on a track. I suppose I could possibly get better trains too but but never said they ever mess with it too much. The profile of it as you pull into the parking lot is astonishing. Probably one of the best amusement park front yards ever. It's amazing that it's longer than the entire length of their pretty size of a parking lot. By the way love your thumbnail excellent shot of it

So, if a park operates in the black, don't do anything? Are you saying that all Cedar Fair parks that get new investments are operating in the red? I live in Michigan and don't want to go there since the newest coaster is a crappy, relocated SLC. Maybe, if we're lucky, we'll get Railblazer in 10 years when they close CGA.

  • @mikalmos369

    @mikalmos369

    Жыл бұрын

@@rossh688 I didn't bother to go into detail but since you mentioned it here you go you get the long essay and I'm not going to bother to edit or double-check any of the typos or autocorrect cuz I'm too tired . First off I was only talking about Michigan and what you said is not exactly what I said but I feel your pain and just so you know I'm from Michigan to even though I don't live there currently, I will move back there one day sooner than later. It's an interesting situation, they could have just bought the park and sold it to get rid of the competition but the thing is it was profitable enough for them to keep it yet not big enough to be a competition. They have made major investments in it just no huge major new ride. They've just brought it up to Cedar Fair standards and brought it in line with their other smaller parks. Unfortunately none of these things we're mostly meant for adults as it was aimed at families something that Cedar Point itself hasn't been really great at until more recently. I'm pretty sure that they will do more now that the pandemic is over. Like making a train go around the lake and putting something like a drop tower or another relocated coaster perhaps the flying coaster since Cedar Point doesn't have one of those added to the other side of the park to Anchor that path. I do think that we will get a bigger investment there, something I'd like to call a small big one which will likely be giving the RMC treatment to Wildcat or like you say a railblazer though I doubt it'll be the one from CGA cuz that's likely a Dozen Years out, which would likely go on the back end of the park on the other side of the lake. If you look at ariel maps and do some research you will see that cedarfair has been slowly creeping around the lake and preparing what looks to be the future of the park. Cedar Fair and pretty much dominates the all of the Great Lakes now because think about it they bought Canada's Wonderland they bought Kings Island Geauga Lake Etc and the only one of those Parks if they got rid of was the one that was the most difficult to deal with and had the least amount of return on its investment, though they tried. Don't forget there was a Marine Mammal Park attached to Geauga Lake which was extremely difficult to keep profitable and didn't fire hawk come from there? They essentially gutted it for parts and sold it too far more profitable real estate Developers . They kept the two good ones and use that money to invest in them I eat Kings Island and Cedar Point itself . The thing is you've got to think big and and decades timescales when analyzing this kind of thing. It also helps that you actually look at the figures that they do release. Before Cedar Fair the owners of Michigan's Adventure were smart by building a massive iconic roller coaster like shivering Timbers building a pretty decent Waterpark especially for a regional one then slapping the two parks for one price on it. It's something that if cedarfair ever got rid of their would-be mutiny but also the amusement park side just doesn't have enough on its own to separate them yet and frankly why bother they don't have to despite how badly we'd like it. As I said I don't live in Michigan currently. I live near Birmingham Alabama and they have a local park here that's similar it's mostly decent Waterpark with a small amusement park attached to it and only one major coaster with not much else. It works just fine as it is so aside from cosmetic improvements and maintenance they don't do s***. The thing is two and a half hours away from here is Six Flags Over Georgia near Atlanta plus the Funspot there has added a ground-up RMC and also not too far from us is Dollywood perhaps 6 to 8 hours on a great drive through Chattanooga something that a lot of people from this area do. Also on the Gulf Coast some company built from the ground up a small decent amusement park. I see Michigan's Adventure in a similar position where unless it gets extremely busy or starts dying off Cedar Fair really isn't going to do much other than slow small incremental movements with an occasional perhaps once every 6 to 7 years Maybe big bump. There was a time that I thought that the lines at Cedar Point we're getting so obnoxious that they would definitely invest more in Michigan's Adventures simply to siphon off some of it but they've already done that with Kings Island which in itself can get pretty busy but nothing like Cedar Point. That seems to have changed. All of the bloggers that I see at Cedar Point this year including theme park worldwide right as we speak which surprisingly seem to trim off a side trip to ride shivering Timbers if you look at his travel map it's pretty obvious you had to trim off a little fat, anyway my point was to your point just doesn't look as busy as normal. However what it does look like as manageable. My guess is that people are holding off going there until next year when dragster reopens. I'm also guessing that Michigan's Adventures going to have a bumper year because why go to Cedar Point this year when there's going to be something new next year. Why so many people including myself say that Michigan's Adventure doesn't get lots of huge investments in it because it's running in the black? It's a cash cow for Cedar Point and help support the parks in the chain that aren't doing so well perhaps that year and by not doing significant capital investment other than making it in line with their other parks they also control any potential serious competition with themselves as well as keeping other corporations from buying it that would be real competition. I remember how excited we were and scared at the same time when Cedar Fair bought Michigan's Adventure. We thought for sure it was either going to get torn down or on the outside that it was going to be completely renovated adding something new and big because Cedar Point was running out of room to invest in. What we got was something in between the two. Cedar Point will never sell Michigan's Adventure as is. They would sell off the parts like shivering Timbers and the water slides Etc then sell it to a real estate or apartment developer. This is exactly what they did with Geauga Lake. Michigan's Adventure had another problem similar to Geauga Lake had as it got bigger. There is also another issue that never gets mentioned and that is the road infrastructure in the area around the park. If you look at Cedar Fair's other parks you'll notice already built in road infrastructure to support huge crowds coming to it. The Whitehall area hasn't exactly been Cooperative with Cedar Point on this front. I don't know a lot about it but if you do the research by digging into quarterly reports and the politics surrounding all of it you'll get a pretty good understanding of why I said what I did and why so many other people say the same. Not to worry it's not going anywhere but don't count on them doing too much and when they do count on them doing it slowly. For now they wanted to capture the families and one day as families get a little older they go to Cedar Point. That seems to be their grand plan. Hopefully my theory is as clear as mud. Personally I think Cedar Fair wants you to buy a season pass and go to all their parks in the area

Thanks for the video. Shivering Timbers looks like a fantastic wood coaster. I am from Pennsylvania so I most likely will never get to see this park. Many people bad mouth it because as you said Cedar Fair only maintains the park with little new investment. However those two wooden coasters you showed look great. That Shivering Timbers coaster is really different because of those major hills on the outbound part of the run are unmatched from any other coasters I have ridden. I love wooden coasters and rode all the ones we have in PA as well as many others around the country but I am sorry I never have been able to get to this park. The other nice thing you mentioned was the lack of long lines. I hate waiting too long to ride any coaster. It looks like at this park you can get multiple rides in without waiting too long.

Great video - thank you! We're from Michigan. We mostly go to Cedar Point, but we always make days to go to Michigan's Adventure to ride Timbers. It's an incredible ride! The first time I rode it, I was expecting a long Gemini, but it was more a Mean Streak on steroids. Wildcat is a good ride for variety, but Timbers is our main attraction. I think the water park is the biggest attractor to MI Adventure, and I'd argue that it is better than Cedar Point's water park. But Timbers is what brings us there again and again, being only 2 hours away. Thanks for this video - it is one of the best we've seen about Timbers.

That looks like some serious negative Gs. Meanwhile, after moving to Texas, I discovered Kemah's Boardwalk Bullet. Out of control, lots of dips and turns, crammed into a tiny space so it's more intense. I urge people to avoid my former home state, California. It's collapsing quickly. If you ignore my plea, there's Santa Cruz's Giant Dipper, which throws you out of your seat much like Shivering Timbers; and Buena Park Knott's Ghost Rider, even more out of control than the Boardwalk Bullet.

Mi adv started as a petting zoo and it still is. It's for families with young children and when the children become teenagers and get the hormones and all that, you start going to Cedar Point. That's the Real Michigan Adventure. Also I'm pretty sure that 90 percent of the people in Detroit have never even heard of MI Adventure. Cedar Point is basically a suburb of Detroit.

You really did a great job with this vlog despite your voice, that’s a sign of toughness and dedication, anyways, I haven’t been to the park since 2016 (at age 13, and only during my second season as a full-time coaster enthusiast on our way to see family members outside of Detroit) and yes, it’s in dead last place in terms of Cedar Fair parks, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad park at all. Yes, it does feel a little neglected, but I liked the wooded atmosphere in certain portions, and lake in the center, and it does need improvement, but it isn’t meant to be that thrilling park at all. From what I remember, Shivering Timbers was a great ride, but I need to give this park a revisit, but not until I take an enthusiast friend there for their first time on a Midwest trip.

I rose it last summer for the first time. The front row is super rough, not what you would expect. As it rises into each hill it jolts you, as if you just hit a pothole on the road. Back row was pretty fun though

It’s astonishing how little Cedar Fair puts into this park considering the metro area the park is located in is about 1 million people. It’s not that far from Cedar Point, but if you look at the metro area of Columbus, Ohio it’s located almost half way between Cedar Point and King’s Island. Detroit and Toledo are about half way between these two parks and you’ll likely see a bunch of people who will go to both parks just like a lot of people from Columbus go to both parks.

@@playdiscgolf1546 Yea, that’s the downside to a bigger park like Cedar Point. I don’t make it there that often so I make sure to get fast pass and spend a couple days so I can make sure I get to ride everything I want to ride. I guess that is one plus for Michigan’s Adventure, with it only having one ride actually worth making the trip out there to ride.

Great review of the park. 100% Correct - It feels like there is a next level potential just waiting to be tapped. Allot of the park you can tell they are still maintaining very well but the place needs that one more GOOD coaster. I love this coaster myself - Shivering timbers is definitely a EXCELLENT standout coaster IMO. If it was smoother it would be forgetful imo - just enough to keep you on edge with all the air time and speed but not so bad that you don’t want to rife again.

Since they spent over 5 million dollars on re-tracks, coaster re-paint, and other park improvements. it’s safe to say they aren’t getting a new coaster or RMC in the near future. I think water park upgrades including a new wave pool are next on the list.

Honestly... Ive been drooling over them fixing up this park for years now. YES! Wildcat should be RMC'd I really feel they should have GCI re-do S.T. maybe even change the layout at the first turn. But keep it wooden. They also have a ton of land behind wildcat they could Easily add brand new/Better coasters. But we'll see what the future holds for M.A.

Nice vlog Marc. ST is definitely a great ride, but that was about all that I really enjoyed. I felt that the park was dead too and lacked the atmosphere that every other CF park except maybe parts of Dorney that got “cedar faired” in the late 90s (concrete midways and boring buildings). Also, it was good to see Wildcat received some track work. I rode near the middle/back of the train and it was definitely my least favorite major coaster I’ve done. It looked like the track hadn’t had any work done in ages. Hopefully they’ll do what they did with Timberwolf and GCI retrack the whole ride in sections until it’s smooth. The park was good for what it is, but really lacks compared to even the lower tier CF parks. This park would be under everyone’s radar without ST.

It certainly is. This is by no means a bad amusement park, as long as Shivering Timbers is running. I do firmly believe it’s the saving grace to one’s visit, though there’s other nice qualities of Michigan’s Adventure too. I think it gets the hate it does because of it’s overwhelming potential and lack of quality relative to other Cedar Fair amusement parks.

People bash it because it’s small and CF doesn’t treat it with the esteem of other parks. Probably because 1. Muskegon is a small market. And 2. They don’t want MA taking too much market share from those who might go to Cedar Point from that area.
