We uncover more history in our 300 year old Irish cottage!
Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, the joining of the buildings continues and we find some old books.

G'day Rebecca and Sam. Wonderful to see how 2 makes the work easier and lighter. Yes Sam that was aimed at you. I will join the others on back injuries and also hernias. They both result in may be even having to give up the dream. But, that said the beauty of the whole homestead is a credit to the 4 of you.

Rebecca, your wild flower meadow is terrific and your “herd” of animals is growing by the week. Sam could not manage without you and your pointing is amazing - well done. Sam, the building is really taking shape and your progress is top notch. The evenings are getting longer and that will be help a lot. Congrats.

@@theirishhomestead you keep doing you, it's refreshing to hear and see real people telling it how it is good and bad. I wish all is good for you all from here on in.
I’m a L ong time gone from Leitrim but it was lovely to see the old gaeilge (Irish) books as I studied in school > 65 yrs ago. The script is so much more familiar to me than modern rendition that replaces ‘seibhiu’ with ‘h’. Delighted that you are going to preserve them. I restored a 200 yo derelict school-house in the area 24 yrs ago. Preserving the vernacular architecture is so important. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing the progress.

Can you tell me what the names of the books were? Im searching for them online. I couldn't make out the names on the video.
@theirishhomestead

Thank you so much for the insight into the books. I was wondering why Google translate was struggling. Some words it would translate and others not. I'm going to frame them somehow and put them on display.
@joandonnelly9187
7 күн бұрын
@@theirishhomestead Because the books are in the 'old' Irish language, Google translate wouldn't work I reckon. Some words that didn't change much between 'old' Irish and modern Irish language, it probably can translate. They look like they've been nibbled by mice or worse, so be careful handling them. Sterling work being done by both of you as always!
That book An Faideog is from a series called Candle readers. "An Faideog" means the whistle. "Sraith Leabhar na Naomh III" is a lives of the saints kind of thing. The subtitle of it (leabhar bhréanainn) can be translated as a foul, or bad book, which makes it sound very interesting. :)
@theirishhomestead
Ай бұрын
That's really interesting! Thanks so much for interpreting. Good translation was just not getting it. Is it an older type of Gaelic?
@trishloughman5998
Ай бұрын
It's an old typeface. There were some small changes to the spellings once the switchover happened but not substantial. The pronunciations remained the same. It meant standard (British-made) typewriters could be used to type Irish, though accents or 'fadas' had to be inserted by hand. The letters with dots over them would have been followed by a 'h' in the new script.
Once again you can hear the original building expressing its happiness to being restored back to its original roots and strength, the work Becky is doing on the pointing is clearly doing its magic. You can see the stone walls changing colour from a damp black / green to seeing the stone shining. You will be glad to see the wood on site as a good indicator you will back to your master tradecraft and if people think your progress is fast on the stones I suspect that the speed of build will ramp up even more quickly. Well done, and did notice Becky sneaking in some more farm animals e.g. rabbits and its a good combination of having the farmer have the cost of feeding and looking after the sheep but you get the benefit of them being around your profit.
@theirishhomestead
Ай бұрын
Ha, thanks, Joe. I agree the stone looks like a different colour after the pointing! I love how nice it's coming on. Hopefully as you say Sam will be in his full stride soon as long as the stone work doesn't see him off first with an injury. Thanks to you that will hopefully not be the case now. Yep snuck in 2 rabbits! Sam just rolls hos eyes now. At least this time the rescues came with a house and Sam wasn't required to build anything. 🤣👍
At the end of the day, we're all mere "armchair builders" giving a running commentary. It's Sam and Rebecca's story, their build, their dream, their home they're working on. May they be inspired and blessed..

Am I the only person who gets a little emotional when watching these videos ? And, I'm not even sure why. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that a young couple from England has chosen to set up home in my country. To resurrect an old home and bring it back to life. Doing so in such a thoughtful and sympathetic way. With respect for the people who built it originally, a very obvious recognition of the skills and crafts of these poor people. And then you see the collaboration and support that Rebecca provides to the hard working Sam. Coupled with young Euan who is not afraid of hard work. Aww thanks. I try with my editing to set the scene as honestly I love waking up here every day and want to try to convey the beauty of the place and what we saw when we first arrived, despite the fact a lot of it is currently a building site right now. ♥️
I love the progress on the house. You are both doing a stellar job. Please let Rebecca help you with the work. You are a team, and things will go a lot smoother this way. Your back is not meant to do such heavy lifting. If you hurt yourself the build stops. Please be careful. Thanks from Canada.

Yes we have been doing more together this week. I think he realised how much he was putting his body in jeopardy. We need him fir and able to complete this project and enjoy it all afterwards.
Hi Rebecca and Sam enjoyed your video it was both educational and enjoyable. Well done I look forward to the follow up, as Sam said the ban corse is sloped out to the soffit. When the rafters go in we use to fill up from the soffit to the wall plate ,this stabiliesed the roof, it was called beam fitting kind regards Sean

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Sean. 👍
Good evening lovely family 😊 What a fantastic intro Bec’s 😍 especially seeing Toby have a brush 😁 Sam please don’t struggle lifting those lintels on your own as I’d hate you being incapacitated and then we have no videos 🥲 Becky tell him off or do what you did help Sam lift those lintels 👍🏻 Your home is really taking shape now and the weather 🌦️ is helping 😎 Take care until next week love Stevie xx

I'm so glad! Thanks
Amazing work, totally amazing family. Jakkers, I worked up a sweat watching you lift the lentils, my wife thought I was trying to help with all the twitching I was apparently doing. I teach history and showed one of your videos to my class as to how older construction was done and how well it has held up. They were impressed to say the least. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much!! It's hard but worth it.
Nice old books with wonderful illustrations featuring various animals; like a harbinger of your wonderful menagerie. The profile of the "house" is really coming into picture with the new lintel between the original structures. Your hard work is revealing a gem of a property. The description of buttresses and bench sounds like a nice feature, too, and gives us yet another reveal to anticipate down the road. Always enjoy your posts!
