A bench made from recycled PPE waste - now surely that's a better option than to let all that plastic pollute our earth?! This furniture build is the biggest project that we've made using beams that we've extruded ourselves. It was great to challenge ourselves and find out what this material is really capable of!
What do you think of the finished bench? It was great for us to finally try a new plastic. Polypropylene definitely behaves differently to HDPE but overall it was excellent to work with. We really like the unique texture on the beams. It gives the final product a really interesting visual appeal. A huge thank you to ReWorked for collaborating with us on this project and supplying the plastic. Go check out the awesome work they are doing for hard-to-recycle plastics.
See you on the next one guys!

I have to admit, I was expecting to see how you guys broke down the disposable masks, but knowing there's a whole organization out there implementing techniques to recycle is really encouraging and the resulting bench is gorgeous! I mainly have some disposables on hand in case I forget my reusables at home, but I will be thinking of this every time I see them C:

Very cool! It would be so easy to add another vertical support thingy underneath if desired
Great stuff guys! Pleased to see you have maintained your early style of presentation! You both look like you're really enjoying it and, at the same time, giving great, simplified descriptions of the 'how'. I know nothing about these processes but can follow what you're saying easily. Fabulous result. Surely someone could take this further and make the benches commercially? There must be a demand for them from all sorts of places - hospital grounds for instance - that would close the circle nicely! Thanks!

@@jennifercampbell3131Hospitals have a terrible habit of throwing out their supplies of they go beyond the 'best before' date 🙄. I've seen this first hand, perfectly good equipment because of some management policy. Its an awful waste. How good would it be to have it recycled into something that can benefit the hospital.
Its so amazing that we can take these once disposable plastics and turn them into something beautiful and useful again
Great sar
Love the bench. A couple of comments. You could embed some rebar in the plastic to avoid snapping. And I wish we could see more of the pelletizing. How do they get rid of the metal nose strip? Or do they simply grind it and incorporate them into the pellets?
@BrothersMake
2 жыл бұрын
Inserting rebar could work. But it would also make the final product significantly harder to recycle in the future. Not sure how they remove the strip. There is no evidence of it in the plastic as it would damage our machines. Possibly using magnets during the shredding stage?

I like how you use normal woodworking tools to show how accessible this is for everyone but (and I imagine I'm not the first to suggest this) I wonder if some kind of hot wire cutter might be a lot less wasteful. That way you wouldn't have all the stray shavings to worry about.
Such a cool project. I'm curious how this bench would stand up to ongoing direct sunlight.
