We Try New Foods🍡Sensory Differences/Picky Eater

Autistic parent and teenager try new foods to see if they can find some more safe foods. Sensory needs makes trying new foods difficult so I'm being brave and trying a load of new foods.

Great to see you collab with Supergirl! She absolutely nailed the brief and kept giving descriptive comments of the food and her how she felt eating them

This was a fun video idea! I kind of did something like this my second year of uni. Chicken pot pie was the only thing I didn't like. I am also a picky eater, but moreso from anxiety than sensory differences. My anxiety comes from the possible shame of wasting food and money if I don't like the food.

Most autistic people seem to hate the texture of food more than the taste. I am a picky eater but taste usually bothers me more than texture. My parents were health food fanatics. My mother let us pick one food we didn't have to eat. I picked tofu. I actually dislike the taste and the texture of tofu. I choked down a lot of foods I hated as a kid. Thankfully I am an adult and can eat foods I like now.

@@Catlily5 struggling with the texture may be common, but taste is a sense too, so is still very much a part of sensory processing. I find both difficult but definitely taste over texture!

In addition, I have to make clear, I love this episode! Interesting to see what's there on the UK market. You have such a great vibe together. And you are so brave ;-) Trying new things is such a drain for me. These days, I am into making vegan recipes for kids, which are not spicy and not fancy, so I like the few ones I have made so far. Self-made hummus for example. And being used to that flavour now, using it as a sauce, for bread, as a dip.

I do the same thing with sauces. I used to put ketchup or worcestershire sauce on everything when I was a kid (my grandma who i believe was also autistic drowned everything in worcestershire sauce as well), but now as an adult my favorite sauces to put on everything are worcestershire and galbi sauce.

I'm the opposite of a picky eater, I constantly look for strong flavors. I think some autistic people have overly sensitive taste buds whereas others have numb taste buds. Any bland food I eat annoys me so much

I don’t think it’s to do with taste buds. It’s a sensory processing thing so to do with how your brain processes the information it receives from your taste buds!

[mini-infodump: beans are the basis of most Japanese sweets (though chestnut and sweet potatoes are also common). It's usually adzuki/azuki, which here is called red bean, but sometimes different types of white beans or even edamame beans or peas are used. They are generally made into a paste (azuki paste is called anko [you can for example see it made in the film Sweet Bean, very much recommend but you will cry], whereas white bean paste is called shiro-an). There are two types of bean paste: tsubu-an (with bits) and koshi-an (strained through a very fine sieve so no bits). Depending on the textures you like, it might be worth sticking to one or the other. Also, traditionally the taste/sweetness is a lot more delicate than what they sell here in the UK, so homemade anko tends to taste nicer. Bean-based sweets are eaten either just as snacks (e.g. dorayaki, taiyaki) or they are eaten before drinking matcha during tea ceremony. Since matcha can be somewhat bitter, tea ceremony masters will serve something slightly sweet beforehand to improve the experience. When I went to school in Japan, our teacher would bring a different nerikiri wagashi [ 練り切り和菓子, please look it up! you won't regret it!] to class every week and they were stunningly beautiful and absolutely delicious. They usually have strained anko on the inside and strained shiro-an (white bean paste) mixed with rice flour (same one as mochi) wrapped around it. Unfortunately, I am yet to find a place that sells them here but please, even if you didn't like those ones, if you get a chance to try anko or shiro-an (maybe even shiro-an mixed with matcha) again, give it another try. It really depends on how they are made. And I am sure Supergirl will help you if you still don't like it :) ]

I really loved this video. It was really nice to meet Super girl. This video has made me want to look for channels who specifically do snack unboxing videos haha. For me I find it easier to try new drinks. I’d rather try a drink and not like it then miss out unless the ingredients sound off putting. I’m a lot more weary when it comes to food as I’m an autistic person with a lot of sensory differences as well. I also tend to stick to a few safe foods. I really want to try the canned bubble tea now, I din’t even know they had it over here. I don’t get out much. There’s a few of the snaks that sounded interesting to me but I’m allergic to soy.

I must be a bit like Supergirl, because I'm pretty adventurous with foods, although I'm less adventurous in ordering food at a restaurant. But that's usually because I know which dishes are dependable and which ones could potentially be ruined. So I often wind up getting a burger or a sandwich at most chain restaurants, and avoid pasta because it can be overcooked or undercooked so easily.

I think this video is a great example of how when we finally decide to do something we dread, it's usually a much better experience than we expected, or even a positive one! Even though trying new foods is tricky for you, it seemed like you enjoyed or at least were neutral about everything you tried. And for me at least, it's worth it to try these new experiences because I might find a new special interest and I really enjoy that :) However, it is important to note that it was your choice to try all these new foods at this time, and they were picked by you. A number of people want to decide for someone else when they should try something new, but that's more likely to result in a poor experience for everyone. It also seemed like the experience was slightly better because you could share it with a person whose company you enjoyed and could share your feelings with. When trying something new, it can be easier to share that experience with another person, because you get some reassurance/self-understanding with what you're feeling based on how they react to the new thing as well.

I think the rice balls are the same thing as mochi? The latest thing in Australia is "frozen mochi" which is the glutinous rice exterior, filled with ice cream instead of a bean paste. They've been a big hit with all my friends so far because of the squishy texture, and the fact that its like eating ice cream with your hands!

You’re very brave trying these new foods, I don’t hardly ever try new foods, I have was my therapist called the “beige diet” . It’s very sensory overload for me strong flavours and weird textures and also like you said, I can’t imagine eating foods that are not want in my head expects them to be eg red bean is a savoury food, so I couldn’t imagine eating them as a sweet food, my brain just can’t comprehend it. I guess I’ll stick with my chips and crisp 🥴

I like your shirt Ella, where is it from? May I politely correct your Japanese pronunciation slightly? When saying 'tofu' you are pronouncing it incorrectly. It is pronounced more like 'toe-fu', rather than 'toff-u'. Sorry, Japanese linguistics is my special interest so I can't resist hahaha! ALSO, soy is a bean that is used in sweets! (e.g. soy milk, soy custards) :D Loved this video it was fun to watch :)
