We Tried to Pronounce Oklahoma Town Names

Комедия

In the South, never judge a town name by the way it's spelled. These town names in Oklahoma are no exception.

Speaking as someone who grew up in Oklahoma, it is NOT a southern state. We are pretty much the only state that doesn’t fit in any of the regions. We aren’t Southern, we aren’t part of the Plains, and we aren’t Midwest. We are Oklahoma.

You ever hear of gen. Stand Waitie?. Last southern gen to surrender to the union. He was a Cherokee who lead a bunch of Indians against the north. In fact my great granddaddy was a southern Calvary officer who was born and bred right here in Oklahoma Try reading some eighth grade Oklahoma history.

A lot of the "weird" pronunciations of Oklahoma towns come from their roots as Native American words. Chickasha is a Choctaw word. Miami (pronounced mi-yam-uh) comes from the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Checotah was named after a Creek Nation chief. Even the name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla and humma, meaning "red people" or, more formally, "Land of the Red Man". This is a state built and inhabited by Native American tribes, and the culture of those tribes is the lifeblood of our state.

Its depends...Well my dad definitely sounds southern and he is southern and when he speaks it's only southern. And me...sometimes I do have the accent but I am southern either way.I do think it's good that u can consider yourself southern no matter what others think...I had to ask my grandma if I was southern and she was like u definitely are since u always had the accent.Sometimes I don't even notice it much but I am then I think how my dad is southern which kinda gave that away even more since I grew up about only a little bit around my dad in earlier years and now I just visit him when I want. Tbh people at my old schools tell me that I am southern and this was before I even asked that question but I always told them that I wasn't and I couldn't tell but now I can definitely tell that I am and I'm okay being southern.

Having nothing to stop the wind in the winter time actually makes us a Southern state. Because northern states have snow to absorb all the cold air in the wind. Where is in a South you only have hard ground so it just bounces off and we get the full force of it. So that makes us a Southern state.

Some of the locals had a little fun with this AZ kid by quizzing me on how I thought "Atch-lee" was spelled. I've lived in at least one of these places, and YES, Oklahoma is most DEFINITELY a Southern State. The further south you go, the more southern you get and I don't mean the directions, either. If you REALLY want a laugh, go up to middle Missouri. When we were stationed up there, I went exploring one day. I honest to God came across these towns: (In no particular order) Tightwad, XXL, Uranus, and last but not least, Climax. To make it worse, they had this store on the highway that I HOPE was not a market of some kind. It was called "The Friendly Little Climax Market." I turned around and went back and took a picture. I was afraid no one would ever believe a place like that existed. Of course, this was back a good many years ago. I did manage to find a picture of it online. Too strange.
