We tried to make 2 evening gowns in a week and it didn't go well (& it's sort of a documentary?idk)

What happens when your friend comes for a week to make evening dresses with you? A fallen tree, a lot of rain, some tears, frustrations, and somehow, barely, you get two new dresses by the end of it...though you really don't understand how you even managed to sew those up.
It's another installment of my massive 1910s sewing project - this time 2 (what was supposed to be 3) evening dresses. They're both from the same pattern, just different fabrics and sleeves.
If you're sick of all the sewing videos, I'm sorry. I promise there are only like 1 or 2 left for this series. 😅
Thanks Kenna for putting up with my stupid ideas.
Here's the pattern we used (we shared all the construction notes and changes with Diedre and I think she's made changes to the pattern, but don't quote me on it!) www.etsy.com/listing/64336079...

Hi Abby thanks for the deal. Been trying to convince my Mum to get me a Birch mattress Christmas. Hopefully she took my hints. 🤞 Bit of an unrelated tangent I was sent a link (which KZread won't allow me to share with you. *DESPITE* It being on their platform. 😒 ) & thought it was beyond funny. & though that you, Nicole & Chrissy could all relate to it. It’s called I Am the Very Model of a KZread INDIVIDUAL (Official Music Video) by Let Me Explain Studios. Hope it gives you a few giggles. I can make clothing in several different "needle/hook" crafts. I can replace zippers in coats and garments. I can hem and do simple alterations and they will look really good, by hand or machine. But to cut out a garment, sew it together and it actually fit well? Doesn't happen. Although, the last time that I tried, my daughter (now 23) was 5 years old. I may try to sew something again sometime. Watching Abby is sort of raising some interest again.

I related so much when you started talking about masters degrees and sewing with your brilliance. I have a PhD and yesterday I had to unpick the french seam of a trouser leg because a did it the wrong way around (in my defense, the fabric doesn´t have a recognisable front and back). I am making those trousers to wear to a scientific conference, btw, so let´s see how that goes.

Yep, engineering degree here and I mess up sleeve gussets at least once on each project where I decide to use them (I've never used a pattern that uses them but they're my favourite cheat for when I don't have QUITE enough fabric to go across the chest). And I always scribble all over the "inside" of my fabric with chalk so I don't forget which side is what whether it matters or not. Arrows for up and down and back and front, that kind of thing you wouldn't think you'd need but oh boy are you grateful you did when all the cut pieces look the same!!!

I'm with Kenna. If you name one dress after colour, then the other dress is also based on colour- so mauve ad black. If you wanted to go with the decorations, it would be the rose dress, and the plain dress. But you can't mix up the categories. Also side note; if Kenna does do more Masters degrees, can she make her theses available to the public? I really enjoyed reading the last one.

The fastest I've ever managed to make a garment, from washing the material to finishing up the stitching, was a week. It was a dress that had to be worn to a funeral--the Sewhouse Seven Wildwood Wrap Dress--and the only reason I managed to get it done was because my boss at the fabric store I work in let me use our big cutting tables to cut out the pieces before and after my shift, and also during breaks. I'm not a fast sewist, but I am proud of myself for managing what I did, even if it wasn't for the happiest of things.

Sewing on a deadline doesn’t ever work out for me. I made a beautiful dress for a rehearsal dinner and I forgot to let it hang for at least 24 hours before hemming because the skirt was cut on the bias. I put it on at the hotel and had a massive facepalm. The hem was so wonky. I thankfully had a backup dress because being disabled I have a tendency to mess things up.

I am thoroughly convinced sleeves are evil. Although I haven't made those kind of sleeves, I've had to draft, draft, and re-draft fitted sleeves for my kirtle. Oof. But these dresses are both so stunning! ❤️

When I saw the mauve dress reveal I was briefly disappointed from the absence of the wenis, but was glad to see it appear on the black dress XD But really, you are a great inspiration and these dresses are FIREEEE

Although to me this video had a strange vide, I appreciate your video being one of making something rather than Morgan and Rachel coloring their hair, Nicole house rearranging and Bernadette doing laundry. It was nice to sit back and watch someone have the same experience I have when sewing...everytime. All the best!

I have to say the asmr moments were very satisfying as well as the pup moments (as a dog mom) love the keeping it real. Makes me feel better about my own crafting adventures. I’m new to the world of sewing, and have recently started quilting.

Lol. The confusion of “rose” seems an appropriate addition to the confusion around the dress instructions of “belt” and “bodice.”

You are a glorious madwoman. The things we makers put ourselves through. Some projects are just slightly cursed. If it makes you feel better I once croched a sweater from a pattern I'd previously made with no problem and I buggerd the first sleeve and had to redo it. Then I borked the second sleeve three times. This doesn't touch needing to frog the first skein's worth of yarn because it was the one off color from a bunch of yarn I'd reclaimed.

Such an odd in-between, mish-mashy era of fashion, isn't it...? 🤭 And it sounds like the patterns reflect that jumbling! Loved how flawlessly you combined dresses, makeup & hair for peak "mood" at the end though, esp. the black gown (aka the rose gown 😂)
