We tried to hike the Welsh 3000s barefoot.

We attempted to summit all 15 of the tallest mountains in Wales, totally barefoot. I love barefoot hiking, I think it is great for your foot health and honestly just makes me feel great. Disclaimer, I don’t recommend you attempt a hike like this as your first barefoot hike! Start small, in the woods or your local park. You can build up from there as your feet get stronger. Any questions, comments, compliments or complaints, I would be very interested to hear them.

    I walk barefoot a lot and I also like hiking barefoot. Last year I climbed two highest mountains on Madeira barefoot and it was an amazing experience. One was in a sunny weather, the other one was cloudy, misty and a bit rainy. And I also became quite a tourist attraction. Also, I agree that you don't need good shoes to hike. You just shouldn't wear inappropriate ones ;)

    Congratulations on your achievement. I am in awe! I also love hiking barefoot and have spent a lot of time in the Himalayas doing just that. Yes, it's much harder descending on stones barefoot than ascending. I have taken shoes sometimes just for that purpose as I've caught unawares a few times. I agree by doing such a dangerous trail barefoot you are much more aware of the environment. I would argue you are in fact less likely to risk an accident. The key is preparation and from your commentary, you are well prepared, very mindful of your surroundings, the risks, and how to manage them, and take things sensibly. I hope to see a lot more from you.

    I’ve been climbing 40 years & really impressed with your adventures. I’m not good at barefoot, but I used to barefoot for around 4 years in the 1990’s. I’ve seen loads of barefoot Nepalese people in the mountains above Pokhara in 2010 & some in France & in Iran & Palestine. U asked for feedback: very bad choice of descent on Snowdon/ Yr Wyddfa: I always take 1 cheap three piece walking pole with me; especially useful for descents. The Llanberis tourist descent is a hell of a slog. Instead we have gone up either The Miner’s route or Pyg Track & then descended via Garnedd Ugain & Crib Goch & the north spur to the A4086. I 100% agree with you that an experienced barefooted is so much safer than the flip flop / crocs / loose trainers tourists - you’re mountaineers & adventurous. U need better navigation 🧭 skills - a 180 degree mistake is plain wrong. You don’t mention you have a compass, but you state you used GPS…. A compass is an essential way to check bearings. I love your open hearts & showing emotion. The 1st time we did the Welsh 3000’s, I was hallucinating on our final assent on Grib Goch & going onto Snowdon - lots of flying dinosaurs, especially pterodactylus. My friend had never told me that he’d tried the year before to do it in under 48 hours & had to stop - he was so ecstatic & disbelieving that we’d done it in a bit over 15hrs (but we missed off part of Yr Elan due to being lost in thick mist). I love had u sowed the raw emotions and joy & pain. If your ever in Devon give me a shout :)

    Upon futher consideration, I can relate even more and admire for both your resilience and your wise decision when reaching the limit. It feels like your companion might have had better barefoot training, or that this trip was at the time suddenly too much. I know how it feels. I did hikes where I walked for a good number of hours, but towards the end it was increasingly difficult with every step, especially on ground mixed with pebbles or worse, gravel. Whish I had the vlogging mindset then... Go girl!

    This past summer I discovered the joy of barefoot walking and I can’t get enough. I am barefoot most of the day and when I wear shoes they are soft thin sole canvas and I don’t wear socks. I began with waking in the park on the grass and as my feet toughened I am now able to walk on rougher surfaces. Have to be careful not to over do a good thing. I even hiked barefoot on some hiking trails. Hope to take longer and longer barefoot hikes next summer. I am determined to condition my feet even during the colder months. I noticed the coats so I guess cold barefoot is doable.

    Congrats on doing as much as you did! In my experience (13 years) feet get tough but your mind will also get tougher. Thus certain sensations that initially drove you nuts become a little more 'tolerable'. But feet, like all body parts, do benefit from rest. So I wonder if at least a day's rest is feasible for this challenge...? Anyway, I hope your mood improved, your soles healed up and should you ever try again, this experience will condition you to some of the fatigue that was certainly to blame for the second day's trials!

    If you don't mind recommendations, I suggest more forefoot and middlefoot strikes. Those alone should reduce further any kinetic impact on your feet, legs and back in general. Also climbing backwards downhill like the other one suggested is a good pragmatic solution to ease the rest of the trip.

  • @KnightOfDoom1
    @KnightOfDoom17 ай бұрын

    Wow this is amazing. Looks insanely difficult but at the same time so much fun. I've never done anything this extreme, and would certainly work my way up with some easier barefoot hikes before attempting, but would love to try this or something similar at some point. Shoes definitely have their place and are sometimes necessary (in my view for reasons pertaining to safety, professionalism, and in some cases sanitary reasons). But many aspects of life are simply more fun without them, and as your feet toughen there will be fewer situations where you'll need or even want to wear them. I think there's a pragmatic balance to be struck between realizing when shoes are really necessary, and when they're serving no purpose other than to be foot prisons that prevent one of our five senses from connecting with the world around us. I think our society, at least where I live, leans far too heavily in the direction of wearing shoes and could benefit from being more adventurous about taking them off.

At 13:20 when you show your soles the stones in the background look like an archeologic site. Do you know anything about the history of that area, it looks very interesting, Your soles look really marvellous considering the long tour in this hard environment. I'm a great fan of barefoot walking but it does tend to be slower than blundering along in boots. Don't pay any attention to the nay sayers. One tip, if you get a cut on your foot compeed blister plasters work well and stay on in water. I live on the west coast of Scotland and often walk barefoot through dead bracken so get small cuts and that's what I put on to prevent infection.

    Gah, sorry about your GoPro. That stinks! Climbing those craggy peaks without shoes...well more power to you. You must have soles like leather! 😆 I take your point about how hiking barefoot requires you to be more in tune with the terrain - it's similar to how if you are trail running down techy stuff you are paying much more attention than if you were hiking . But it seems likely to me that there is greater risk in barefoot hiking, especially in inhospitable places. Feet are so important and shoes, any kind, will offer at least some protection. Watching you climb that scree...yeesh. In a different situation with scary weather if you were forced to hurry, well that could get bad fast. That shot at 07:24 is telling, with those randoms descending easily while you step gingerly from rock to rock.

    Thank you, I was gutted about the loss 🥲 my soles are very leathery! And I agree, shoes offer protection from the elements and that's the main reason I still wear them. And good spot, I left that shot in for that reason!

    A quick suggestion for your descent… walk backwards. It’s sounds crazy, makes you look funny and may not always be the best choice depending on exact conditions, etc… but it does help ease the pressure on your feet as your knees are absorbing more of the impact. Sorry that this was such a hard challenge for you…. But so happy you achieved as much as you did. I found your channel by total chance. The algorithms seemed to notice I was watching more ‘outdoorsy’ content and recommended your channel. I’m glad it did. The channel shows a lot of promise. I hope you keep making videos.

    I really understand what you are saying here, and its a good suggestion when you are wearing footwear. Its an entirely different problem when you are barefoot. As your foot comes down, youre committed to where you place it so its often hitting a sharp stone or a loose stone.. As you ascend, you can test out foot placement and pick the best slot, but not when you come down. Your feet get battered and sore very quickly. I think walking backward may even be worse as it exposes your toes and the softer parts of your feet more. I hope you dont take this comment the wrong way, just wanted to share my take on what you suggest.

I'm still learning what I enjoy to make and what people enjoy to make, so your opinions will go a long way in shaping my channel :) Also I appreciate your thought process, I often walk backwards with shoes on, but as Phil said below when you're barefoot its a lot more committing, I would want to see where my foot is landing every time!

    @@elventuresuk Off the top of my head I can't think of what I would suggest you make. But I will say that the best videos are ones people make for their own interest and enjoyment first and foremost. That radiates through the finished product more than anything. At my end I am planning to start a new channel after not updating my current one for a long time. Part of what I want to do is make short films with interesting people. So maybe I will drop you a message down the line if you would ever be up for such a thing.

    I love the scenery and your story. I'm wondering if you conditioned your feet a bit more if you would be able to tolerate it better. I've been barefooting for 4 years now in all kinds of surfaces and also - 10°C (no wind) more and comfortablely over time. I am inspired by your adventures and would love to try this for myself with a couple of friends. I might combine it with a trail bike like a Honda Trail 125 with a camping hammock to establish a base camp. My main concern would be rock or mud slides. I am always amazed at how the weather can vary so much on a hike like this. Again, thank you for your video and story.
